It investigates if there has been a slow shift from top-down planning to increasingly bottom up and participatory policy processes, examining the successes and failures of recent environmental policies. Linking deliberation to collective action, this book contends that it is crucial to involve local actors in framing the policies that decide on their rights and control over bio-resources in order to achieve the goal of sustainable human development.

The first examples of large-scale participatory processes in Indian environmental policy were the 1999 National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan and the 2006 Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers Act. This book explores these landmark policies, exploring the strategies of advocacy and deliberation that led to both the successes and failures of recent initiatives. It concludes that in order to deliberate with the state, civil society actors must engage in forms of strategic advocacy with the power to push agendas that challenge mainstream development discourses. The lessons learnt from the Indian experience will not only have immediate significance for the future of policy making in India, but they will also be of interest for other countries faced with the challenges of integrating livelihood and sustainability concerns into the governance process.

Managing Virtually

How do you manage a virtual team? What about cultural differences? Is email the best way to communicate? How do you integrate team members across cultural boundaries?

This book answers all these questions and more. It is to the point and has some valuable information. As someone who has managed virtual teams before, there are a lot of helpful hints this book gives you that I wish I had when I started. As much as there is to like, I also thought that everything after Chapter 7 was not as applicable to just virtual teams. The information in Chapters 8 and onward can really be applied by any manager anywhere. Its good information, but not really enough. The authors try and take too many broad concepts and break them down for virtual teams, and the last chapters have a whole lot of good information, but not much great information.

* First seven chapters are excellent

Cons
* Last half of the book loses focus
* Would have liked information on building virtual teams (ie, what sites to use, what screening questions, etc.)
* Best information is contained in side bars and bonus boxes rather than the actual text

All in all, this would be a great book to pick up for anyone who has to manage virtual teams or is thinking about managing virtual teams. Recommended. Virtual Team Leaders Should Get This!

In the "Manager's Guide to Virtual Teams," readers will find more than the typical team leader and team-building information, as it goes beyond the meeting room to encompass members located elsewhere and the issues this brings for the team and leader. Yes, the book covers team basics like: budget, charter, collaboration, communication, decision making, goal setting, roles with responsibilities and accountability, operating guidelines, performance feedback, problem solving, and trust. And the Fishers go beyond that to explain how these things may be more important to or more difficult for virtual teams. Why it is important for the team to understand business and their customer is also presented. The virtual team issues of members being in different geographical locations, across multiple time zones and work shifts, as w ell as dealing with varying cultures is emphasized throughout the book. The use of technology such as telephone, email, internet meetings, texting, videoconference, and etcetera is discussed. Tips on obtaining work/life balance for the manager and their team members are also provided.

As a leader's guidebook , case studies and assessments for the team leader are included for use in planning, as well as a checklist at the end of every chapter to review main points. Plus helpful activity instructions are available in the chapters where the leader should facilitate a particular type of discussion with their team.

Great Management Advice for a New Type of Team

"There was a time when some experts wondered if an effective work team was even possible if its members were not physically located together." Kimball and Maureen Fisher

Most of us now either work or know someone who does in "virtual," or non-face-to-face, environments. This new work innovation presents special challenges, benefits and obstacles whether workers are in the same country or increasingly, in several different countries around the world.

Organized Format Expedites Learning

The book contains seventeen concise yet detailed chapters introduced by enlightening quotes. There are also ample table of contents and index sections. The co-author's writing style is engaging, conversational and knowledgeable. "Key Terms" sections quickly explain concepts that may be unfamiliar to the reader. I liked this feature since it provided easy access for future reference. There were also helpful sidebar items to reinforce integral points such as "For Example" and "Smart Managing". I also enjoyed the "Manager's Checklists" at the end of each chapter which was another innovative feature to help virtual team managers.

Practical Advice

One of the most salient features of this book was its generous doses of common-sense advice. For example, "We have a business contact in Moscow who has an 11-hour time difference from our location in Portland, Oregon. Every virtual meeting requires someone to work outside of the "normal" 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday. In these cases, do your best to minimize this problem by choosing the least disruptive times." Or one that few writers would have had the courage to include: "If you discover that deep-seated or irreversible cultural biases exist on your team (members of warring groups or religious sects, for example), you may have to adjust your staffing."

Cluttered Layout in Some Areas

At times, too much information was presented in small spaces due to the chosen book layout and sidebar features. Even though this is a "Briefcase Book," I believe that more white space in some areas (for the physical book which I read) might have made this publication easier to read. This is not a criticism of the excellent content; however, a longer book (it was 214 pages before the index) might have made a few sections less cluttered. Some readers may not mind. Especially if they use this book more as a reference source than a daily guide.

Fantastically Detailed Biography That's Also A Quick Read

A fantastically detailed (and lengthy) biography of 330 pages, that's also a very quick, absorbing read.

I first heard the name "Guy Burgess" when I read a biography of Kim Philby twenty years ago. That book ignited a lifelong interest in the history of cold war espionage. I've since read countless books on the subject, including a dozen about Philby himself, and another dozen about the other Cambridge Spies in his orbit, including Burgess, Maclean, Blunt, Cairncross, Rees, and Straight.

About 15 years ago I first read somewhere that an exhaustive biography of Guy Burgess by Andrew Lownie would soon be published. I was very intrigued because Burgess was the most 'colorful' of those Cambridge Spies, but, other than a very short biography from the 1950s by 'fellow traveler' Tom Driberg, one about whom relatively little had seemingly been publicly disclosed. Buty that book was never published for whatever reason, until recently. Here it is, at long last.

This 330 page book fills that gap in 'the literature' phenomenally well. A lot of the detail was new to me. But as the extensive end notes make clear, what Lownie has also done exquisitely well is cull and collect the details about Burgess previously published over six decades in the myriad non-fiction books about the Cambridge Spies, and knit that all together, along with a lot of new information, into a compelling and revealing mosaic.

The result answers the two questions about Guy Burgess that had lingered unanswered in my mind for decades: (i) how did a man caricatured in 'the literature' as a dirty, louche, openly gay (at a time that was illegal in Britain) and communist, outspoken and acid-tongued, perpetually pickled drunk maneuver himself into successive positions of authority at the BBC, the British intelligence service(s), and the Foreign Office (especially a posting to buttoned up 1950s Washington, DC), and (ii) how damaging a spy was he really, or was he merely a flamboyant clown 'along for the ride,' tragically?

Along the way the book provides new detail after new detail as well. Some of that is mere trivia, but a lot of it contributes importantly to the full picture of the man that the books paints so effectively. If you want to read the names of the dozens of notable men with whom Burgess had 'affairs,' or even his preferred sexual positions, its all in here.

Disappointing and basically a book about a brilliant, but flawed character. I did not enjoy reading about a spoiled, abusive, alcoholic, gay guy who was not in anyway likeable.

It shares the feminine aspect of well known and lesser known ancient sites in Europe, South America, and South East Asia. It is a celebration of the creative, intuitive, and sensual experiences of women of all ages and cultures. The journeys vary in duration, but there is a common experience of finding one's "ancient knowing", and remembering cultures that celebrated in harmony and co-creation with Mother Earth.

My book for that lonely island!

One of the best books I've ever read, definitely the one I'd take along to that lonely island where you can only have one book. Deeply profound personal journey stories, wonderful to read, great range of experiences told in such a personal way that I sometimes thought my best friend gave me her personal travelogue. The story by Chesca Potter was the one that made me buy the book, and I love hers best, but - aww, what a cornucopia of delight on all pages!

Fantastic, highly recommendable, both for "couch pilgrims" and for those of you who want to visit these wondrous places out there in the real world. A must-have for every woman thinking about pilgrimage!

I wanted to like this book

but in the end I put it down three-quarters finished. The premise is good, "Women's Pilgrimages To Sacred Places", and a few of the sections made me want to visit the sacred spaces mentioned. Where the book's strength should be but where it falls apart is it isn't written by professional authors, but everyday women on a personal journey. The chapter's gripping excitements range from 'sweet and naive native children appearing with magic mushrooms' to derogating the gifts left by other visitors...what makes one person's vision wrong and someone else's right?

Uneven and in the end, uninteresting. I bought the book for Chesca Potter's entry because I enjoy her art so much. Should have saved my money.

Excellent book for trainers that care to know joints better!

As a personal trainer, I'm always on the look out for more information. In this business, like many others, one should never stop learning and looking for more to learn. I've also been a joint-mobility expert for 10 years, and THIS book is an excellent resource to understand joints and movement futher (especially when exercise to obsessed with muscle and NOT joints). I know I am NOT a doctor or physical therapist, BUT it does make sense that personal trains must take time to learn more about joints than muscles. Yes, know your muscles and how they work as a group, but the joint have much more to them as they tend to be the victim of the abuse from muscles (be it good or bad movement).
That being said, the book is one of the better books out there in my opinion as an educated personal trainer. Other trainers who are in it for money, women, ego, or like just tell people what to do will not buy this book. On the other hand, those who care and figure out they must be aggressive with education (and not just college, but independent study as well) would benefit from this book. How much? Depends on a)if you take the time to read, remember, and understand the material in the book, b) practice while learning, c) make sure you offer joint range of motion measurements in a NON-medicinal sense (use as a measureable index and NOT as a medical or diagnostic tool) and make that clear to clients. PS: Don't forget to purchase a quality Goniometer (search the internet).

Book notes: Pictures are black and while with red line accents and some red for muscles in drawings. People who are NOT doctors or therapists (ie, Personal Trainers) would be a little or a lot lost with some or all of the numberical data and references and literature referals. I suggest you read EVER WORD and be cautious in what you do and when you use the measurements. The teaching pictures are reasonable, but I wish they were in color, larger, and the text was more friendly.

good beginner book for goniometry.

I am a student in a physical therapy doctoral program and this was one of the required books for the class. This book has been fairly useful in studying goniometry. The pictures are good and the descriptions of patient/therapist positioning is very clear. The only thing that I would add to it would be a quick reference spreadsheet for goniometer placement so one does not have to flip back and forth through the book if you are looking for a single reference point for a joint motion.

Interesting book

Emily doesn't know what hit her. One day, she believes that she has a perfect life - a wonderful, caring doctor husband who adores her, a baby on the way, and a comfortable, financially-secure lifestyle. The next day, her life literally goes up in flames - she discovers that her "devoted husband" really had a mistress on the side and had died in her arms from smoke inhalation, her life isn't so financially secure thanks to her husband's reckless spending, and everything she had ever hoped for is gone. The only small comfort in her life is the child she is expecting, her own little miracle baby.
Dillon, Emily's brother-in-law, is determined to take care of his brother's wife, despite having kept her at a distance for the seven years of her marriage. Emily does not know that her handsome, brooding brother-in-law has been in love with her since he first met her. Emily also does not know that it isn't her husband's child she is carrying, after all - but Dillon's child. Can Dillon win Emily's heart after finally given the opportunity, or will the secrets he keeps tear them apart before they can begin?
I really enjoyed this story. Dillon was a great hero - strong, intense, and fiercely devoted to Emily and the baby. Emily was also a great heroine for him - she too had a strong character, which was obvious when she kept going even after the fullness of her husband's betrayals became known to her. Some of the secondary characters (particularly Adele, Emily's mother-in-law) were one-dimensional and could have been fleshed out a little more, but that's not a major flaw in the story line or anything like that. Dillon and Emily's relationship progressed over time and seemed completely natural, almost like this could really happen in real life :) So if you want to spend a few hours with a pleasant, heart-warming read, pick up this book! :)

Truly Romantic

Yes, I know this is a Silhouette book but its a great read!

Emily McGuire's husband, prominent doctor Keith McGuire is dead, he was in a fire, in bed with his mistress - in the house he kept for her. Emily has just learned that after years of trying she is finally pregnant and now its all over and her world is in shambles. She had no idea that he was cheating. After going through the funeral and all the gossip, she's ready to start her life over but she needs a job and she doesn't know what to do next. She's never been close to the rest of Keith's family, her mother is dead and she has no other family.

Dillion, Keith's brother has never been friendly to Emily, she feels that he doesn't like her and she's never comfortable with him but after the funeral Dillion steps in and handles all the details - he wants her to rely on him but since she won't he offers her a job and helps her get an apartment (nothing is left after all the bills are paid). After Emily determines that the offer of a job is not a move to give her money for doing nothing she and Dillion become friends. But there are still secrets that need to be told and confessions that need to be made.

I love Ginna Gray books, her later books are very good but these have great story lines and the content is wonderful. When you're in the mood for a hea without too much hassle or drama, this is what I like to read and yes, it does deserve a 5 based on what it is and who wrote it. The best of Silhouette!

Hero fell in love with heroine 1st but his brother married her instead **SPOILERS**

Pregnant heroine accepts the job offer of her recently-deceased husband's brother. She's always felt uncomfortable around him but she has no choice but to accept his job offer due to the huge debts her cheating husband incurred without her knowledge. Hero fell in love with her since they first met 7 years ago but his brother wooed her first. He hid his love for her by being aloof around her but now that she's single, in need, and pregnant with his baby without her knowledge he is compelled to help her as much as she allows him. Heroine warms up to him as she gets to know him in the next few months. His sudden marriage proposal makes her unsure if his motives are solely because of the baby or if she has a chance to be loved by him.

What I liked most about this book was the sensitivity & realism Gray gave to the development of heroine's love for Hero. It took her months to reconcile herself with the true nature of her cheating husband and to fall in love with Hero. But in the meantime the build-up of heroine's emotions & sexual awareness of Hero became more intense. Hero's perseverance towards supporting her & hopefully making her love him as a result was touching. Hero wasn't celibate during the 7 years he was pining for her but when she became a widow the other women who visited him were no longer appealing. He stayed celibate during the 11 months he waited for her to reciprocate his attraction.

Hero was quiet, aloof & dominant in general but he showed his sensitivity, caring, & patience by the things he did for heroine. I loved how his assistant-cum-2nd-mother revealed to heroine at the end that Hero kept a picture of her in his desk while she was still married. He acted like he didn't care for her but inside he was a hotbed of deep, pining love for heroine. I understood his reasons for constantly delaying his confession that he was the sperm donor of her baby. He had integrity but his fear of losing her superceded it. I wished the ending was just a tad longer with Hero & heroine discussing Hero's reasons for keeping his secret for her & for more sex scenes.
