    Lance Flavell is a 3D modeling and animation teacher with an animation diploma from Auckland's Media Design School in New Zealand. He has a strong interest in teaching students how to use open source software, especially Blender, to create and explore 3D computer graphics.

    Delivers what is promised

    For a beginners book I can see only a few ways it could have been made better. Blender
    is a very comprehensive and complicated tool. The authors approach is appropriate for
    instructing a beginner about using this kind of tool. If you read through to get a general
    idea of what is being taught then read it again and work with his suggestions you will
    learn. The author encourages experimentation along with the execises which will teach
    you even more and help you to remember the location of all the tools and how they work.

    After finishing this book you will be well on your way using Blender but you will also know
    that this is only a beginners book and there is so much more to Blender. You will know
    enough, however, to discover the full power of Blender yourself.

    There are times in the book where the text instruction omits some details. The illustrations
    help to get back on track. Fortunately hunting around Blender until it can be figured out
    ends up teaching better than the explaining.

    I have an extensive library of technical books I had acquired back in the old days when you
    could thumb through it in a book store. Of the hundred plus books I only bought one that
    turned out poorly written, ineffectual and I gave it away. I'm keeping this book.

    I gave it five stars. It is a beginners book that delivers above expectations on its promise.

    Where are the color images???

    I just received my printed copy after reading the eVersion 7 day trial, it is a great easy to follow book. BUT! when I received the printed copy all of the images were in black and white, even though on the cover, of the actual book I received (not just the amazon listing but on the actual book), it states "Full Color Inside".

    I contacted the publisher and they said "deal with Amazon, I'm sure they'll take care of it, which they did, as always with Amazon's support (at least in my experiences anyway).

    I was surprised there was no: "oh yeah a few copies were not in color" or "Really, we just changed our printers, I'll check into it" or "sounds like a illegitimate copy, please send me your invoice", nope nothing, only that Amazon should deal with it.

    I still gave the book 4 stars, because it is a great book and this might be a one-off problem, I just wanted to let people know in case they had a similar issue.

    It kills me the number of people who will rate an item, that either never bought it, or was a seller padding the positives, or had an issue with a particular seller and rates the product poorly for it.

    Better than other tutorials

    For a long while now I have been trying to migrate from Sketchup to Blender, using various tutorials in the process. I tried Blender for Dummies, but that book wasn't too helpful for someone new to blender. Also tried numerous online video tutorials, and still had trouble learning how to the simplest tasks.
    This book, however, is straight to point and covers most, if not all, of the capabilities of Blender. Within twenty minutes I learned how to make models.
    Another advantage is that it teaches the you how to use Blender 2.5 beta, which will eventually become the standard, instead of teaching you 2.4x whose obsolescence is around the corner.
    It's a great buy, I regularly recommend to my modeling friends.
