When British Navy Lieutenant Neville Burton climbed the accommodation ladder of the 74-gun Royal Navy ship HMS Elephant in June of 1801, his thoughts were of his deceased lover, not of his duty waiting at the top of the ladder. Depressed and discouraged, he was not ready for the treachery that would soon face him at the hands of the ship’s First Lieutenant. Grief surrounds him.

Neither were his thoughts on another facet of his service to the Admiralty – a mission of international intrigue. ‘Something always presents itself’’, he’s told by his contact and mentor in Whitehall, when he complains of having no idea how to accomplished the task.

The seemingly simple process of getting home to England or serving normal naval duties are not in his cards. The winds of change and the vagaries of battle soon conspire to send him to unusual duties for British Navy officers during the Napoleonic Wars – from Denmark to the North Coast of Africa and on into enemy France itself. Lieutenant Burton combines his courage, resourcefulness, and luck to escape capture when his mission is discovered, only to find himself conscripted into other dangerous duty: inshore action in the ports of Spain.

Burton’s happy arrival home in England is met with a new twist of his fate: his mentor, Sir William Mulholland, asks his further compliance to continue the mission that began in France. The theater of operation is now Jamaica, however – a place that Burton knows well, but which holds a heavy place in his heart. When he sails there, it is to serve aboard another third-rate ship of the line, the 74-gun HMS Vanguard. His new platform affords him an opportunity to participate in the capture and sharing of prize ships and to begin calculating how he might accomplish his mentor’s mission, the investigation of a possible spy.

Ashore, an unexpected meeting marks another potential turning point in his life. He encounters Marion Stillwater, a beautiful young girl who is remarkably similar to his lost love. Is another romance, another affair of the heart, even possible so soon after the other? The encounter is sweet, but short, and Burton is recalled to duty.

For the second time, he is offered the opportunity to accept a command in Port Royal Bay, and his acceptance bestows upon him the rank of Master and Commander of a prize ship: the unrated schooner Superieure. With this promotion, the dreams of a young officer seem to be achieved – at least until he begins to see who is coming aboard to man his ship… the dregs of humanity from other ships of the fleet. The seeds of mutiny are sown, but his exploits in Jamaica are not complete. Simply being a Commander does not solve problems – only serves up more peril. Sent to find and discourage the ever-present pirates of the Caribbean on Jamaica’s northern shore, the smell of mutiny hangs in the air.

Georges Carrack serves up the detail of sailing of square-rigged ships into war along with accuracy of historical situation, all enhanced by description from the author’s personal experience at sea. His style and stories should appeal to followers of Patrick O-Brian's Aubrey-Maturin Series or C. S. Forester's "Horatio Hornblower".

Excdellent

Of the four novels of this series that I have read, this is by far the best. The action scenes are realistic, as is the on-again-off-again courtship of Neville and Marion. The time-travel element to which I previously objected is pretty much all gone (although I haven't quite finished and who knows what might happen in the last few pages?). Unlike other books in this price range, the proof reading was done well, although there is one puzzling reference that seems to have sneaked by. I would definitely purchase and read the fifth in the series, if there ever is one.

Author needs to do his homework!

I am writing this review after finishing only a small portion. The author keeps referring to the Danish as Dutch! If the reader does not have some knowledge of history she or he would be greatly confused. The Dutch had no part in this battle. The only thing they had in common was the "D" at the beginning of their names. I am not sure if I will finish this series. Good editing should stop these kinds of mistakes.

Each story was pretty good by itself

Very confusing. Book 4 (which was published before Book 3) contradicts certain plot points in Book 3. The author obviously either had no overarching plan for the two novels or decided to take a second crack at the story line in Book 3. Each story was pretty good by itself, but confusing as a series.

Delivers what is promised

For a beginners book I can see only a few ways it could have been made better. Blender
is a very comprehensive and complicated tool. The authors approach is appropriate for
instructing a beginner about using this kind of tool. If you read through to get a general
idea of what is being taught then read it again and work with his suggestions you will
learn. The author encourages experimentation along with the execises which will teach
you even more and help you to remember the location of all the tools and how they work.

After finishing this book you will be well on your way using Blender but you will also know
that this is only a beginners book and there is so much more to Blender. You will know
enough, however, to discover the full power of Blender yourself.

There are times in the book where the text instruction omits some details. The illustrations
help to get back on track. Fortunately hunting around Blender until it can be figured out
ends up teaching better than the explaining.

I have an extensive library of technical books I had acquired back in the old days when you
could thumb through it in a book store. Of the hundred plus books I only bought one that
turned out poorly written, ineffectual and I gave it away. I'm keeping this book.

I gave it five stars. It is a beginners book that delivers above expectations on its promise.

Where are the color images???

I just received my printed copy after reading the eVersion 7 day trial, it is a great easy to follow book. BUT! when I received the printed copy all of the images were in black and white, even though on the cover, of the actual book I received (not just the amazon listing but on the actual book), it states "Full Color Inside".

I contacted the publisher and they said "deal with Amazon, I'm sure they'll take care of it, which they did, as always with Amazon's support (at least in my experiences anyway).

I was surprised there was no: "oh yeah a few copies were not in color" or "Really, we just changed our printers, I'll check into it" or "sounds like a illegitimate copy, please send me your invoice", nope nothing, only that Amazon should deal with it.

I still gave the book 4 stars, because it is a great book and this might be a one-off problem, I just wanted to let people know in case they had a similar issue.

It kills me the number of people who will rate an item, that either never bought it, or was a seller padding the positives, or had an issue with a particular seller and rates the product poorly for it.

Better than other tutorials

For a long while now I have been trying to migrate from Sketchup to Blender, using various tutorials in the process. I tried Blender for Dummies, but that book wasn't too helpful for someone new to blender. Also tried numerous online video tutorials, and still had trouble learning how to the simplest tasks.
This book, however, is straight to point and covers most, if not all, of the capabilities of Blender. Within twenty minutes I learned how to make models.
Another advantage is that it teaches the you how to use Blender 2.5 beta, which will eventually become the standard, instead of teaching you 2.4x whose obsolescence is around the corner.
It's a great buy, I regularly recommend to my modeling friends.

In 1990 they bought 160 acres on the northeast coast of Nova Scotia where they would construct a cabin and rebuild their lives together. The following summer the author, his wife, their three adult children, some friends and a local carpenter began work on the cabin. They lived in tents, without electricity or running water. In this charming account of that summer, Gaines combines the story of building the cabin with glimpses into his family history and a portrait of the Acadian community that surrounds his property. In this memoir, Gaines writes of his quest for a simpler life and renewed family ties through moving to Nova Scotia and building a cabin. Separated from his wife and children, Gaines tires of the hedonistic lifestyle that has threatened to end his marriage; he seeks to solve his problems by a change of place. Like Thoreau, he explains step by step how he chose the site, purchased the land and materials, and then built the cabin, achieving the desired family togetherness as the project advanced. Introspective and sensitive, he reveals the joy to be found in rural Nova Scotia life and presents a view of coherence rare in today's fragmented families. Gaines should be a role model for men of the Nineties: strong and masculine, yet willing to reject the materialistic in order to nurture family relationships and find his center. A world-weary, middle-aged novelist (Dangler, 1980, etc.) and sportswriter retreats to the wilds of Nova Scotia to build a house and rebuild his family. In the summer of 1989, Gaines and his wife Patricia, a painter, were separated and talking divorce. After three children and 30 years of marriage, they had grown apart--victims, not unlike Scott and Zelda, of the bitch goddess of success: Charles's first novel had recently been made into a movie, and he and Patricia were jet-setting about the country, flirting with movie stars and growing increasingly estranged from each other and the simple life they had once shared in rural New Hampshire. Although Gaines sidesteps the issue of whether he and Patricia were actually unfaithful, he nevertheless draws a compelling portrait of two people bent on destroying their marriage. After Patricia bottoms out and gives away all her jewelry, including her wedding and engagement rings, to street-people in New York, she decides to give the marriage another chance. In 1990, the Gaineses purchased 160 acres in Nova Scotia; the following summer, Charles, Patricia, their three grown children, and a handful of friends returned to build, with their own hands, their ``family place.'' Weaving together details of construction and carpentry with personal revelations about marriage and midlife, the narrative works as both a factual account of housebuilding and a poetic testimony of love lost and found. A Wonderful Look At The Maturation Of A Family

I have been a fan of Charles Gaines since reading both "Pumping Iron" (which he did in colloboration with famed photographer George Butler) and his novel "Stay Hungry", which was turned into a movie in which Arnold Schwarzenegger had one of his first serious roles. Yet this book is so far afield from anything like his previous work that it stands alone. It is at once a confessional and a tribute, for in this book Gaines articulates what it means to finally recognize how superficial and fruitless his endeavours over a several year period had been, and ho whe and his wife decided to make a last stab at saving their faltering marriage by retreating, en famille, with the rest of their extended family of kids and selected friends, to spend a summer building a summer cottage on the rugged coast of Nova Scotia.
The trek proves worthwhile, as does the reading experience, for we find ourselves paging through this day-by day account of how they made it happen, and how they all grew together in a renewed bonding of individuals through the common experience. Of course, not all of us have the resources or time to engage in such a quixotic adventure, yet reading the book made me yearn for the opportunity to engage my loved one and friends in some common enterprise not so much for the acomplishment of the task, but for the opportunity to grow and experence each other and the mutual growth that would occur in such an engagement. That is perhaps a solipsistic method of decribing and endorsing a book for one's fellow readers, but there it is. Like Jack Nicholson's famous line in "As Good As It Gets", it makes me want to be a better man. Enjoy!

Family First

I thought this might evoke the feeling of place for Nova Scotia the way Under a Tuscan Sun did for Tuscany. Instead the emphasis on family interactions and learning to reconnect takes center stage with the actual housebuilding and descriptions of Nova Scotia's land and people merely the stage setting.

I applaud his efforts to return from the abyss of emotional bankruptcy and to form new bonds with his children and wife. He gives insight into childhood influences and shows the seductive lure of celebrity status that were pulling the family apart.

Although I had wished for more details on Nova Scotia, nonetheless it was a satisfying read.

Sobering and Encouraging...

I stumbled onto this book as my wife and I were expecting our first child. I now return to it as the pressures of career, family and life in general build up and tear away at me. It is in a package the story of the descent and reestablishment of a marraige, the pressures of the passage of time on a family, and the value of time together and a focusing project. This book has a permaneant home on my bookshelf.

Great Resource
