Wish it had more substance for being so short, but is good otherwise...

I read this in one sitting and it didn't really leave me feeling anything. It was 50~ pages but didn't even feel like an entire introductory chapter of a normal book. I just feel like three "volumes" could have been put in one to really have any impact on me.

Otherwise, it was enjoyable. Improvements could be made to be sure it sounds as 'casual' as a young woman writing in her personal journal. Too much background explanation spoils the feeling of authenticity unless done really, really well.
The main character and the other characters were well-written. Her feelings about being cautious around strange men are extremely relatable and I appreciate when details like that included. Many times, book characters will just run off with weirdo men they don't know into perilous situations, because wow how exciting - but our main character here is smarter than that, and our writer is smarter than that. There are no tired tropes there - she is in charge of herself even around people with more 'experience' with her in paranormal situations. She isn't just being dragged around by the older, wiser ones for no reason. She is choosing to do everything she does out of her own firm interest. I really appreciate that!! It's a breath of fresh air.
The paranormal parts are done in a really interesting way because I am more interested in the people surrounding the events, the origins... and didn't feel any fear or chills and thrills with that. I prefer it that way, really, but I'm not sure if the author meant it that way.

Random observations:
- Liked the journal intro bit about speaking casually and hoping future historians can use it to understand our era.
- Noticed two typos (one 'too' instead of 'to', another grammar issue) - but who cares, really?

A good exposition

This novella seems to have a lot of promise, but I wish that the author had decided to publish a full novel rather than part of one. MY PARANORMAL JOURNAL ends abruptly at what I suppose is a third of the way through the plot, which is disappointing, because what Moses did publish was very good. I enjoyed the use of both exposition and plot development throughout. The protagonist's voice is very strong. I get that publishing part of a novel or a slim volume for free and then offering the rest for a fee is a common technique on Amazon to garner profits, but I would have paid for this, in completion, by itself.

Little quirky but over all good

This is a rather interesting take on writing a book period. It's written just like a journal, possibly even is the authors actual journal for all I know. The narrator is a bit quirky and a little all over the place at first, but then starts to focus more and more on the paranormal. The journal chronicles a women's life as she struggles to balance college, work and her ever growing fascination for the paranormal. I like how it is told in a way that introduces the paranormal slowly. The narrator has experiences and tries to figure out what they are and if possible how to debunk them while offering the reader tidbits of her research.
I was a little bummed at the cliff hanger ending of the book, yet I'm sure it picks back up in Volume 2. Over all a well written, fun account of one woman's struggle with the paranormal.

The historical chapters will show the liturgies to be a contemporary expression of fidelity to core values of the Apostolic Tradition. The chapters on the rite of each sacrament are mainly descriptive and historical, but they also include anthropological reflections that are meant to unveil the human significances of the various rites.

Walsh is an Irish Catholic priest with a heavenly writing style. Of particular interest is Walsh's theological analysis of the Sacrament of Baptism. Must reading for anyone interested in the Church's teachings on this sacrament.

horrible. pass this one, stick with the Spin cover article

I've read a lot of biographies in my day, a number of which being music related. Up until today, the worst I've ever read was Mick Middles' excuse of a bio about The Smiths back when they were still a band. And then I came across John Mendelssohn's "Gigantic"and I'm pondering how best to discard this worthless excuse for a tome without violating several laws.

This book is poorly researched, needlessly snarky, and lacks a decent sense of humor that the author was hoping to put across. Naturally, the lack of research is really the most important aspect: a good biography is well-researched; a good band biography will go into some depth about each member of the band and their background. Was it really to hard to include how Kim's dad wanted to learn guitar but when he saw his daughter play he gave up?

Half the book is filled with chapters of fiction, and after reading the first of these chapters, about a teenage girl who is unattractive but wholy attracted to using the word "like" as much as possible, I gave up and skipped these chapters. Much like I gave up on the book with only a handful of chapters to go.

One word: unnecessary. This is an unnecessary book that's only benefit is looking at the cool pictures to keep yourself from throwing it upon a fire. Omnibus Press should be wholly ashamed to have put an unattributed quote touting the book as "the most in-depth accoun of the Pixies carrer ever published." [...]
I wonder if my local library would take this as a donation. Probably not.

Gigantic waste of time

All the reviews here have made may day complete. I too have spent a saturday of my life trawling through this beautifully packaged sack of garbage. And I too resent having spent time on it, if I lived in the States maybe I could sue this guy for mental hardship and the negative effect his book has had on my life. My wife too has had too listen to me rant and explode at the end of every chapter. Fortunately we are still in a honeymoon period and she find sthis cute. It could have sent a less harmonious couple to the divorce court. Everything everybody has brought up is true: It IS the worst music bio you've ever read. The writing style is lazy, repetetive and annoying....the constant jokes about Frank putting on weight are pointles, childish and uncalled for...e.g. "Charles played a couple of shows around thanksgiving this year, presumably filled up with turkey, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings". It is pitifully under-researched and the author seems to actually hate the subject he's writing about. If you have bought it, then you have every right to take it back and demand your money back (under English law goods must be "fit for the purpose for which they are sold"....well this paper isn't anywhere near absorbant enough to wipe your arse on, and you aren't going to get anywhere reading the damn thing)

The only good point is it is short. Like most book nerds I can't admit defeat and put a book down once I've started it...thank god it's only 200 pages. I was supposed to strip the wallpaper off the spare room today. I genuinely wish I'd done that instead. I cleaned the rabbit out this afternoon, in between reading, and I have to say that Arnold (a chocolate coloured dwarf lop) had produced a great deal more of worth than the author has.

enough! At least this review has given me chance to vent steam and I must thank Amazon for this opportunity, like-minded readers can come here and find solace....perhaps we could hold support meetings and have annual competitions to find better and more inventive ways of saying the plain truth: this book sucks so hard that James Dyson must be green with envy.

A Gigantic Failure.

This tripe is a blog shoddily dressed up as a book. The Pixies wanted nothing to do with this project, wisely denying this guy so much as an interview. Undeterred, he decided to proceed with recycled information (most of which even the casual fan can pick up on their own through various Pixies websites) and a perplexing, unnecessary, and bad story ostensibly about some Pixies fan or other. I'll generously say that the author may have been trying a "Depeche Mode: 101" approach in which fans are chronicled alongside a band. Unfortunately, "Vicky's [Boring and Pointless] Story" comes off as something the author was working on before he shamefully cashed in on the Pixies reunion, and threw into the mix with a few Pixies references once he realized he had scarcely 100 pages on the actual band.

Notably missing is any useful information concerning the recent Pixies reunion. Painfully present are countless hack-critic discussions of the band's work.

Do not buy this book. Do not let someone give you this book. If you end up with a copy in your hands, do yourself a massive favor and immediately use it as kindling.

Meh...

Easy Evenings by Mary Calmes (MM/Romance)

Hmm...well, I gotta say it, though I hate to, but since this is an HONEST review...I gotta say that this is my least favorite of the Mangrove series and my least favorite book so far by Mary Calmes. Mizz Mary, I adore reading your stories, but this one just didn't do much for me. I would have given it a 2, but because it's by this author and because the book had some romantic factors I've come to expect from this author, I'm giving it 3 stars.

The 4th book of the series is about Laz and how he ends up with a 3 year old daughter as soon as the book start. That part wasn't even in the blurb. No hints at all so I was surprised. His daughter "Kitty" was cute, but how she talked was very grown-up. It was like a 14 year old in a 3 year old body or something. I wasn't convinced.

The romance between Laz and Britton wasn't convincing either. Britton found out that Laz didn't want to quit being a rent boy not because he enjoyed it, but to provide for his ungrateful sister and mother. Yeah, he found that out, but I think he was all over Laz too fast. I mean, this was the guy you served a restraining order against...

Idk, like I said, this didn't do much for me, but I still look forward to reading other Mary Calmes books in the future.

This isn't romance

I loved Blue Days, the first book in the Mangrove Stories series. The second story, Quiet Nights, was also a decent, but I thought the third one, Sultry Sunset, was pointless and disjointed. While Easy Evenings is an improvement over that, there is still something missing in the story that left me ultimately dissatisfied: ROMANCE.
Mary Calmes has a strong tendency to write about long-time friends suddenly becoming lovers, usually with affections well-established before the stories even begin. Sometimes this can work well in a full-length book where the author can still build the relationship and characters despite what else is going on in the plot (the Marshals series comes to mind). However, when constrained to a novella length, these stories leave no time for even the most perfunctory of relationships between people who are nominally the main characters.
To be sure, Easy Evenings is not a bad story, but it is not the romance described in the Amazon blurb. This is a story of Lazlo getting custody of the daughter he never knew he had, coming to terms (quickly, and with minimal angst) with his terrible family, and, incidentally, hooking back up with his ex. Easy Evenings does not just contain the cliched InstaLove to which so many stories resort, it has InstaLove told via brief flashback which is mostly a description of a party and sex. Britton was a non-entity for 90 percent of this, and when you consider the book is only about 80 pages long, that's not much time for character development. Add in the negative perceptions of Britton carried over from Quiet Nights, and the whole love angle was a non-starter for me.
Blue Days and Quiet Nights worked because they were primarily romances, and the plots' details actively brought the characters together. Hopefully in future novellas, Calmes will get back to the core component of romance- the couple- and leave the detailed plots to the stories with the length to support it.

This Novella was sadly just not for me...

So having not read any of the previous books in this series I will admit to being a little lost but I rolled with it.
I really liked Lazlo's character and felt bad for him after having a mom and sister like he does...
What I was not a fan of was the misunderstanding that broke up Lazlo and Britton then the way all was just forgiven like no big deal you got a restraining order out on me I still love you. That made no sense to me at all and then everything moved so fast after that and they are living together it was really just honestly crazy to me.
So while I liked Lazlo's character and some of this story I was not a fan of Britton and how fast everything moved after that. So I am sad to say as much as I have love Mary Calmes books this one was just not for me..
