Honest and heartfelt more than hip and hardened

Jenny Bahn is like an art kid who couldn't escape the elite pretty girl clique, but made elite pretty girl her day job while working as our secret agent on the fashionable inside. Thank goodness for the photographer who suggested that Jenny Bahn be a writer.

Her first book, "Brooklyn Love Stories" is a collection of short pieces about 20-something Brooklynites falling in and out of love. It's a different matter than her observations at jennyblovesyou, cultofugly, ladyclever -- here Bahn makes observations about things that didn't really happen, but gets the hardest part right: making an empty old man like me care about the kids in the book, kids who belong to the generation that tries not to care. Bahn writes emotion and dialogue in the sharp manner of cool kids -- like paper cuts you don't feel until they hurt like hell, and by then they've changed the subject.

"Brooklyn Love Stories" ground my heart to dust, in a good way. It's honest and heartfelt more than hip and hardened, worthy of compliments and attention.

An Exciting New Voice

I have been a regular reader of writer Jenny Bahn's excellent blog "jenny b loves you" where several of these stories first appeared, but reading them collected here all together added up to a much deeper experience. The sum was greater than the parts. The characters recurred, changed and grew. Taken together they form a portrait of a generation looking for love in a merciless city that conspires to prevent it.

A fantastic read from a very talented writer!!!

Brooklyn Love Stories was an absolute joy to read!

I've procrastinated writing this review because such an eloquent piece of writing deserves an equally articulate review and I knew I wouldn't be able to do it justice. Jenny Bahn is an incredibly gifted writer. She seamlessly weaves together humor and poignancy with an authenticity that few can achieve. You are completely invested in each character to the point that you miss them when you are finished. They creep into your subconsciousness and become real people with whom you are concerned and invested.

I am an old school reader who has resisted the kindle mostly because I can't shake my habit of folding pages with exceptionally written passages that I inspire me as a writer. When I finished Brooklyn Love Stories, I had to laugh because almost every page had been folded, sometimes two or three times, causing its density to approach phone book girth.

I could not have enjoyed this book any more! Bravo Ms. Bahn!!

About the Author
Fredric Brown (1906 1972) was the only writer to achieve equal prominence in the mystery and science fiction genres. His first foray into mystery, "The Fabulous Clipjoint", won the Mystery Writers of America s Edgar Award for Best First Novel. Brown was also the acknowledged master of the short short story; the famous collection "Nightmares and Geezenstacks" demonstrates his consummate mastery of a form limited to no more than five hundred words. His short story Arena was the basis of a famed "Star Trek" episode; Martians, Go Home! was adapted for a 1992 film; The Last Martian was adapted for Serling s "Twilight Zone" and starred Steve McQueen at the start of his career. This may not be the best mystery Fredric Brown wrote, but he was one of the pulp masters, and anything by him is miles
better than most mysteries being written today - this is definitely worth the read - you will relish his style and clever plot!

At the center of this volume is a detailed explication of Benjamin's effort to transform Husserl's program for a phenomenological epoche into a paradoxically nonprogrammatic, paradisal epoche, by means of which the structure of paradise can be exactly outlined and the Messianic moment—as the ultimate event of arresting language—can at last appear to enter into its own.

He demonstrates this idea in eight unique essays examining the writings of a variety of philosophers and literary figures, chiefly from Germany. Regarding clear communication and the idea of divine revelation in language, Fenves dissects the complex views of Leibniz and Mendelssohn. In addition, through the writings of Johann Peter Hegel, Heinrich von Kleist, Walter Benjamin, and Luce Irigaray, he presents intriguing examples of plot and dialog, such as perceiving a rainbow's colors or issuing an illegal police warrant. Five of the eight essays are revisions of works previously published. While they address related questions, the essays do not directly build upon one another. As a result, readers may be intrigued but feel that the inquiry lacks focus. Because Fenves incorporates many German words and philosophical terms into a dense writing style, his work is most accessible to philosophy graduate students and scholars. An extraordinarily lucid, erudite, and dense work that treats
some of the seminal figures of German modernity - from Leibniz
onward - with uncompromising philosophical seriousness and
originality. The chapter on Benjamin and the paradisal epoche
is one of the few works in recent years to offer any new
insights on this immensely popular, but often superficially
discussed, figure. Also noteworthy is the daring interpretation
of Leibniz, expanded from an earlier version in MLN, which
constructs a rigorous theory of antonomasia, relating it to
central problems in the Classical and modern theory of language.
