Like an Odd Dream with a little Horror
By K. Groh
This was a well told, interesting Kindle short. It reminded me of an odd dream where everything seems real but nothing is really as it should be. There is no good way to explain the story without giving too much away (although there really is no beginning, middle, or ending, it just 'is'. )

It is easy to read into where the tale is going but then, it doesn't. But that is what makes it good. It is not contrived or common.

A quick and quirky tale that left me wanting to read more of Mr. Hill's work.

A great short that sticks with you. It was remarkably powerful for a work of such a short length. Congrats to Joe Hill for weaving such a strange but memorable tale!

My Father's Mask was a great read--and I love my Kindle as well!!
This story is also part of the 20TH Century Ghost book--also a GREAT read.

I recommend these to anyone who enjoys authors such as Deaver,Koontz and Kellerman...oh yeah, and King.

You should set aside plenty of time because you won't want to put these books down.

What the Early Christians Believed About the Difference Between the Spirit and Soul, by David Bercot

Most of us have been taught that the man's soul and spirit are the same. We have also been told that we are unable to do good in our human state—without being born again. But is this true? The Scriptures talk about body, soul, and spirit. The early Christians believed that fallen man can still do good because of our spirit, which reflects the consciousness of God in man. A very different way of looking at the nature of man--in contrast to the Augustinian/Calvinist view.

Shells pass overhead and explode in a sheet of flame a hundred meters away.’ When Paul Bumer and his classmates join the army, nothing has prepared them for the death and destruction that they witness. Machine guns, huge artillery shells and poison gas create a nightmare world for these young men and their older comrades. For months and years attack is followed by counter–attack. Will any of Paul’s friends survive long enough to return to their families and loved ones? Will there be a place for them at home, when peace finally comes? Can any of these soldiers make sense of the massive conflict in which they are involved?

The Organ Grinder's Monkey, by Robert Rangel, Steve HUI

A riveting saga of deceit, scandal, sex, greed and power…

I've traveled all over the world. I've stayed in the best hotels and eaten in the best restaurants. But that isn't me. I'm a simple man. I have simple tastes and I live in a simple house.

But people who knew of my past life still want to know . . . what's it like? What's it like to work for the richest family on earth, the Royal Family of Brunei?

"Well they have money and they spend it," I answer them. I tire of the subject. I know once they get a taste of the story, the questions will keep coming.

"No," they answer. "That's not what I mean. What's it like to travel with the Royal Family? What are they like?"

How can I answer that?

What are they like? They are one of the last true monarchies here on earth. They still rule with a word and with a wave of their hand, no different than they did centuries ago. I worked for a true monarchy, which could have been taken straight out of the movie, "The King and I".

There is not enough time in a day or even a week to tell them all there is to tell.

Yet this story is true. It is no movie nor is it a fairy tale.

I lived it.

For a simple man like me who lives in a simple house, to become a slave of the highest order and to have lived in their world is still surreal.

I see you interrupting me, "A slave you say. There are no longer any slaves."

I scoff at you. I was indeed a slave. What do you call a person who has no life other than what the prince or princess gives them as their daily morsel. What do you call a man who does not sleep but maybe three hours a night waiting by the phone for orders or instructions for twelve years on end? Shall I tell those who ask that the work almost killed me several times over? Shall I tell them that I was indeed a slave who lost his wife because of years of neglecting her and who did not get to see his own children grow up?

Shall I tell them of the deceit, lies, and backstabbing which were the normal part of my everyday existence. Shall I tell them that maybe only one out of ten thousand men could have done my job because of the miracles that they expected me to perform?

No slaves indeed!

Welcome to my life.

Incredible Life
By Namae
This story amazed and replused me! I loved it! It was amazing how the authors were able to live through terrible situations in which they were at the beck and call of such selfish egomaniacs. Awful! I loved and was fascinated by how the co-author was able to find the means and the wherewithal to escape by a hair's breadth. Didn't want to put it down! I had to know what he (you'll know who he is if you read the book) would do next to appease the wrath of the gods! And these were actual personas, not fictional.

I highly recommend this book if you like to see what it would be like to work for a royal family. It'll blow you away.

"The Other Half"
By Mario
I remember when, before I was hired to work for the Royal Family, Owen told me "Mario, you're not going to believe how the other half lives." Money was not a consideration in that society unless you didn't have it and would employ any means to attain it. I was just a "worker bee" on the fringe, but I still saw the mind-set of those involved in this way of life. The book brought to light even more of the inner workings of one of the last Royal Families. I enjoyed it and can't wait for book two.

An eye opener
By John Harper
The behind the scenes work necessary to facilitate the lavish lives of modern royalty.

I enjoyed the book. i still have questions for the author, such as why sacrifice your life for these wastrels?

Close Encounters of the Fatal Kind: Suspicious Deaths, Mysterious Murders, and Bizarre Disappearances in UFO History, by Nick Redfern

Everyone has heard of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. But what about close encounters of the fatal kind? The field of UFOs is rife with unsettling examples of suspicious deaths. Accounts of accidents that might not have been accidents after all, abound. Researchers and witnesses have vanished, never to be seen again. Conveniently timed heart attacks are reported.

Out-of-the-blue suicides that, upon investigation, bear the distinct hallmarks of murder, are all too common. And grisly deaths at the hands of both extraterrestrials and government agents have occurred.

Highlights of Close Encounters of the Fatal Kind include:

  • The strange saga of the incredible melting man.
  • The UFO-related death of the first U.S. Secretary of Defense, James Forrestal.
  • The mysterious disappearances of military pilots and their connection to UFOs.
  • The connections between national security and the sudden deaths of UFO investigators.

Getting too close to the cosmic truth about alien abductions, Roswell, and what the government really knows about UFOs can--clearly--be a deadly business. The government's latest admission of the existence of Area 51 is barely the tip of a very big iceberg.

Yet another great Nick Redfern book
    By M. L Lamendola
This is one of many Nick Redfern books I have reviewed. Others include The World's Weirdest Places and Keep Out, but I don't think any of the Redfern books that I've reviewed are similar in subject matter.

I enjoy Redfern's books for several reasons. One is his somewhat hyperbolic writing style. As an editor (magazine articles), I normally find this grating to the point of intolerability, but for some reason I really enjoy it when Redfern does it. Only with one book did he go too far with this, and in Close Encounters he found his rhythm again.

Because of Redfern's writing style and word combinations, I feel transported back to my youth, when I listened to Radio Mystery Theater or heard Rod Serling make his commentaries on episodes of The Twilight zone. Few can master this, and Nick Redfern has done so.

Another reason I always enjoy Redfern books is the amazing research behind each one. These books are full of arcane facts. Maybe it's his writing style that permits the reader to enjoyably absorb them all, or maybe it's that writing style combined with how he threads them together combined with the fact they are downright interesting.

This was, as usual for a Redfern book, a good read.

In Close Encounters of the Fatal Kind, Redfern discusses 18 different accounts of mysterious death (or deaths, because in some accounts there are several deaths that are oddly related to a particular incident).

As the cover art and subtitle suggest, a major theme here is UFOs. Actually, the theme is the many mysterious deaths related to UFOs and to such things as the Strategic Defense Initiative (Reagan's "Star Wars" system), which, according to Redfern, appears to be UFO-related.

Maybe one or two of these deaths would not create a pattern with noticing. But when you gather these up, the sheer preponderance of them raises a red flag. And as you start delving into individual cases, things just get curiouser and curiouser.

Some of these cases are surprising, at least to me. For example, I was surprised to find out that UFO concerns had something to do with the demise of James Forrestal. I had previously understood the reason for his demise was his insistence that we take care of the Soviet Union problem following WWII. Such insistence is probably why General Patton emerged unscathed from the battlefield only to die in a car "accident." A study of the Forrestal story would be quite interesting. We get only a slice of it in this book.

As usual, Redfern digs up information that even avid readers can't have encountered already, adds in some things only the best informed of us already know, and stitches it all into a compelling page-turner of a narrative.

As usual, there's the standard government cover-up in many of the bizarre stories. But then, we've come to expect lying and killing from a government that treats the law the way a dog treats a fire hydrant. So references to Men In Black, cover-ups that must have originated in high places, very questionable "suicides", and citizens inexplicably disappearing do not surprise anybody who has been paying attention.

Perhaps a 13-page bibliography is excessive for a text that runs only 191 pages. But perhaps Redfern is deeply committed to doing an awesome job of actually knowing what he's talking about. For Nick Redfern, a freakishly long bibliography is normal.

Is he just listing sources, regardless of their quality? Maybe some sources are dubious (for example, he lists the Huffington Post in his bibliography). But he steers clear of noted disinformation sources such as the New York Times (I didn't see it listed in a scan-through looking for it, and apologize if it is).

Many of today's "non-fiction" authors are in the employ of state-run media outlets and seem incapable of differentiating fact from fiction. They have a particular worldview that arises from a lack of critical thinking skills, and from an insular way of accessing information (they access disinformation, almost exclusively). Consequently, their works are riddled with factual and logical errors. I have yet to catch Redfern producing such a work. Considering how many Redfern books I have read and how varied the topics are, that is saying a lot.

Redfern just won't present something as fact unless he's verified it as such. Most major news outlets seem to take the opposite approach!

The book is also indexed, which is helpful for those using it as a reference text. Given how loaded this book is with facts, that could be very helpful in discussions with others when such discussions turn to the many mysterious deaths of UFO researchers.

I have read numerous books concerning UFO's and I have read numerous books by Nick Redfern. This by far is one of my favorites. I have never read anything that depicts all of the strange and unusual deaths surrounding UFO's. From bizarre suicides to peoples flesh being melted off, this books highlights the sinister side of both those who actually encounter UFO's to those trying to keep the phenomenon a secret. If you are interested in UFO's and/or people who die under mysterious circumstances then this book is for you. Great Job Nick!!

    Researched Extensively!
    By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca
Redfern's book casts additional light on the UFO issue.
The author discusses fatal illnesses contracted due to the
proximity to UFOs, cattle mutilations and other unexplained
    phenomena.

His description of a squadron of UFOs from Maury Island
brings a chilling sense of suspense to the existence of
these objects, as well as repeated independent sightings.
The description of small humanoid bodies at Roswell
Airfield raises eternal questions about the site which
have fascinated journalists for over 6 decades.

The book is well researched with many references to
government files, as well as, FOIA sources. The book
will make a small contribution to the existing stock of
UFO literature due to the historic secrecy over the issue
which limits comprehensive disclosure. In addition,
the government has been hesitant to open its records
    for a more thorough disclosure.

Despite all of these historic research obstacles, Redfern
has been able to glean much from the existing stock
of literature, as well as, FOIA filings. The author cites
resources like The Huffington Post, Atlanta Journal,
    Futura Publications, International UFO Reporter,
Granada Publishing, Simon and Schuster, Tacoma
News Tribune, LA Examiner, New York Times and more.

Suicide in Twentieth-Century Japan (Routledge Studies in the Modern History of Asia), by Francesca Di Marco

Japan’s suicide phenomenon has fascinated both the media and academics, although many questions and paradoxes embedded in the debate on suicide have remained unaddressed in the existing literature, including the assumption that Japan is a "Suicide Nation". This tendency causes common misconceptions about the suicide phenomenon and its features.

Aiming to redress the situation, this book explores how the idea of suicide in Japan was shaped, reinterpreted and reinvented from the 1900s to the 1980s. Providing a timely contribution to the underexplored history of suicide, it also adds to the current heated debates on the contemporary way we organize our thoughts on life and death, health and wealth, on the value of the individual, and on gender. The book explores the genealogy and development of modern suicide in Japan by examining the ways in which beliefs about the nation’s character, historical views of suicide, and the cultural legitimation of voluntary death acted to influence even the scientific conceptualization of suicide in Japan. It thus unveils the way in which the language on suicide was transformed throughout the century according to the fluctuating relationship between suicide and the discourse on national identity, and pathological and cultural narratives. In doing so, it proposes a new path to understanding the norms and mechanisms of the process of the conceptualization of suicide itself.

Filling in a critical gap in three particular fields of historical study: the history of suicide, the history of death, and the cultural history of twentieth century Japan, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Japanese Studies and Japanese History.
