About the Author

Michael D. Lyman is Professor of Criminal Justice at Columbia College of Missouri, located in Columbia, MO. In addition to being a teaching faculty member, he serves as the program Coordinator for the Master of Science of Criminal Justice Program and the founder of the college’s Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science Program. Before entering the field of college teaching, he was employed as a criminal investigator for state police organizations in Kansas and Oklahoma and has taught literally thousands of law enforcement officers in the proper police techniques and methods of professional criminal investigation. Dr. Lyman has authored numerous textbooks in criminal justice dealing with the areas of criminal investigation, policing, organized crime, drug enforcement, and drug trafficking. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wichita State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri–Columbia. He has been called upon on an estimated 300 occasions by law enforcement and the legal communities to review criminal investigations and render the results of his evaluations and his opinions in federal court proceedings nationwide.

I am nearly done reading the book. There are so many typos and duplicated paragraphs! It is like they released a draft and forgot about creating a final edit. For the money it costs to get this book, I expect the editor/author to at least try.

Aging gracefully with lots of life left - not for SW testing

This book represents a pivot point in Perry's prolific published works that date from 1981. What makes it pivotal is the fact that this book synthesizes his approach to IS quality assurance from a production support viewpoint and his future work which focuses on software testing.
Although over 11 years old the QA approach contained in this book is still valid. To get at the gems, though, you have to overlook a few things. For example, terminology common in the mainframe data center of past decades sounds quaint even to those of us who came from that environment. Also, the code examples used to illustrate quality problems are sure to confuse the younger generation of C++ and Java developers and test professionals who probably never heard of PL/I and only vaguely know about FORTRAN.
What I like about this book and the reason why I think it's still an important reference is the fact that application quality from an enterprise perspective is addressed. This goes beyond testing and release processes, as well as beyond project issues surrounding applications delivery and SQA. The focus is on production and maintenance, although testing, SQA and project metrics are addressed.
In addition to the focus, the book contains checklists, questionnaires and sample forms that can be updated to reflect modern computing environments - and you may be surprised to find that much of this 'ancient' material requires very little modification. Another aspect of this book that I like is the material on software maintenance, which seems to be a lost art, although it's as important now as it ever was.
Don't let the age of this book deter you if you're interested in quality assurance from a production support point of view. If you are seeking a book on software testing this will not be useful (I recommend Systematic Software Testing by Rick D. Craig and Stefan P. Jaskiel for that) or SQA metrics (any of Robert B. Grady's books are great starting places). The best recommendation I can give is that this book has served me well in over a decade of consulting, and it probably will for years to come. However, it shouldn't be your only reference either.

Good for starting a new quality assurance department

This book would be very useful for those implementing QA groups in their companies. The book displays a deep understanding of the issues involved in that. The sample QA plan, manual, and its forms and charts can be very useful. Unfortunately, some of the material, such as the checklists, is pretty dated. The book takes a fairly scientific approach to QA, and that may appeal to some, but not others. The book doesn't follow the IS0 9000-3 model, per se. Finally, the book assumes the reader works in an internal corporate IT department rather than one which serves outside clients. The book is still very useful, nonetheless.

Valuable information, perhaps with an ideological sway, at a very steep price.

In short, The Matrix Reader offers a wealth of insight on the intersection of race, sexuality, gender, class, and diversity, but I do not believe the book warrants a price of nearly $100. The text is a diverse collection of thoughts and ideas (e.g., essays, research papers, poetry, and data tables) from a multitude of sources.

Reader is not a linear book. Instead, each chapter, written by a different author, is devoted to a different subject, drawing from a broad range of topics. The writers come from a host of backgrounds, and each unique perspective reveals a different approach on how to analyze the sociological and historical factors that have shaped the modern dynamics of oppression, power, privilege, inequality, and prejudice. As the book makes clear, many of the forces playing influential roles in our lives often operate in secrecy and behind closed doors that many are wholly unaware of. The text is designed to bring such phenomenon into the collective consciousness.

Additionally, a large chunk of the book is devoted toward the benefits of diversity, the means to cultivate diversity in organizations, and suggestions for becoming agents of social change.

My only critique of this book is that it tends to make prescriptions for change in broad sweeping generalizations, which can often take away from the individual’s role in shaping their own experiences in a multicultural society. Furthermore, by categorizing all people as either “privileged” or “oppressed” tends to over-simplify very complicated and multifaceted issues. Many of the chapters in The Matrix Reader suggest that external and environmental factors are wholly responsible for the personal experience at the expense of individual autonomy.

I read this book as part of a graduate seminary course on leading diverse organizations and found it to be quite thought provoking, to say the least.

Excellent continuing story from Borderline. Great characters.

A thrilling read.

D'Marcus Jefferson, also known as 'Snap' is a DEA agent who knows how to trust his instincts. When he first sees Kenneth Santos he thinks the man is an addict and is disinclined to even talk to the man. But Kenneth had asked to speak to him specifically, even though they had never met before.

If you have read the first book in this series, you would understand why, when Snap first saw Kenneth he also rang his mate Mac and asked him to come down to the office and take a look at the young man for himself. Kenneth is the spitting image of Tanner, Mac's partner. But Tanner doesn't think he has any family. Anyhow, that is a sub-plot in the story but it helps create another interesting angle on the drug running operations.

Snap and Ken have an almost instant attraction, even though both of them know that nothing can come of it. Ken has given Snap and Mac information about two drug shipments and now the DEA plan to send Ken back into the cartel to learn more. Kenneth seems resigned to the fact that no matter what happens to him, he is going to end up dead. The man who set Ken up and sent him to Snap in the first place told him he would die if he didn't go through with the information drop. If the cartel find out that Ken has told the authorities then he will be killed by them. All in all, have a short life span kinda takes the romance out of anything.

Ken is in a serious situation and while he trusts Snap, he also knows that Snap will insist that he has to do his job.

So he does. This is not a pretty story - all lovey-dovey and roses. Snap and Ken can't stay away from each other but with Ken working as a mule, and for the DEA their time together is always rushed and as unsatisfying for the reader as it is for the two men involved. Tanner and Mac make for some interesting reading and as I had read the first book in the series I was glad to see that the two men were as committed to each other as ever.

This book can be read as a standalone, but honestly you would understand more about the drug running operations and cases that Snap and Mac are working on, if you have read the previous book. Snap and Ken do get their HEA but it wasn't as believable as the one between Mac and his partner Tanner (in book one) but that is probably because in a lot of this book the two MCs are apart. This is still a thrilling read and if you like a strong storyline along with your romance then I definitely recommend this book.

This was an interesting book. I really enjoyed the first one and even though you see some of the same characters, this one was not quite as good for me. I did like Ken, but it felt like he was always putting himself down. Once he had started to receive some attention from Snap, I expected the self-deprecation to diminish. However, it didn’t. That kind of grated on my patience, but I get why Chase would continue to bring it up.

Snap was an interesting character. I really liked him – you could feel how honest he was. And, despite his reservations about Ken, Snap’s character was so good that he was able to see what Ken was trying to do.

The mystery continues – I was intrigued to know who was the mysterious whistle blower...I have my suspicions, but really want to see what is in store of the rest of the characters. I hope that we get to see Dalton in an upcoming book, because even though I hate him – I want to see what his character is all about. Also, I would like to continue this series because I really am hoping that Chase will write Victor’s story - he is the most interesting character for me.

Even though this book was only lukewarm for me, I really did like the way that T.A. Chase developed her characters. It was not a rush, per say, you got to know them, their motivations and emotions. Each character stood on their own, while learning to lean on each other.

It was a good story of drug smuggling and the drug cartels. The story had a nice twist on how Ken fit into the whole drug scene.

Ken and Snap were an interesting pair. Ken was a recovering addict and Snap was the DEA agent. I liked how Snap wasn't worried if anyone found out about his feelings for Ken. It was great how Snap was so trusting of Ken, even with his background. Ken was awesome helping the agents. Both of them seemed to be looking for a little more to happen in their relationship.

The story had a good ending to it. I felt it was a good read and I enjoyed it, but it just didn't have the "wow, it was amazing" feel for me.

When Ken walks into a DEA office with information he will only give to Agent D’Marcus “Snap” Jefferson, it becomes Snap’s responsibility to keep the former junkie safe. But Ken’s identity is an enigma that proves to be almost as dangerous as his job as an informant.

This is the second book in the Delarosa Secrets series and while it should be read after Borderline, much of the backstory is filled in for new readers. I love the way this story develops threads from the first book and leaves several things to be resolved in a future book.

I love the way the characters in these books are so multi-faceted. The author hasn’t written good guys and bad guys; she writes complicated, deeply flawed human beings. The attraction between Snap and Ken is instant and their chemistry is explosive. The sex scenes are hot, but I’m still not sure I believe the straight-laced-boy-scout DEA officer would really risk so much for instant sexual gratification.

Anyone wanting a great suspense series with hot sex between men in uniform will enjoy Delarosa Secrets.

This is a revelatory book about the culture of the Marsh Arabs in Iraq. The author travels with the famous expert, Wilfred Theisiger and gives the reader a deep understanding of why Iraq will resist any central government's attempt to form a cohesive central government. A classic!

The first work I have read by Gavin Maxwell, whom I always equated with Scotland and otters; in this account of his time spent with the Marsh Arabs of Iraq (1956), he tells of his first encounters with the animal, in the reedy waterways by the Tigris - and of his discovery of an otter species which was named after him.
But the main part of this work is of the place and the people, as he accompanies experienced adventurer, Wilfred Thesiger, in a reed canoe. staying in the reed homes of local sheikhs, he describes the villages, where each house is 'a tiny island of its own...we could see through their slit doors to firelit interiors where buffaloes shared their warmth with the human family. Not galleons perhaps, but Noah's Arks.'
We read of the huge bird life, the turtles, fish ...and huge numbers of wild pigs, the hunting of which occupies the locals - not for food, but to keep down the numbers of a fierce creature. And of local life - dances, disease, generosity and dishonesty...
Quite poetic at times, Maxwell describes a world which was to practically disappear under Saddam's rule, with the construction of canals - but is now being restored by ecologists.

Classic Travel Writing

I read Wilfred Thesiger's book about this trip first. That of course was a great travel/adventure tale, but Gavin Maxwell's book of the journey into the land of the Marsh Arabs is equally interesting, and I would rank it up there with the travel classics. Maxwell's book is also much funnier than Thesiger's more sober account of that trip. Maxwell has a wonderful eye for detail, and is able to successfully convey to the reader the feeling of what it was like to be among this most different culture.

Cesare Cardinale is a rich businessman and race driver who also works as a hitman for the Mafia, because he enjoys killing. But after killing four would-be-witnesses, the Mafia bosses are afraid he might talk, so they want him dead.

The plot is a standard hitman story without any surprises. The focus is more on Cesare's romantic affairs than on the actual Mafia/hitman story. The book also spends quite long parts on background stories on the two female characters. "Stiletto" is a quick read, but not very interesting.

This book really awesome. All of his books are good, but this one is my favorite. The suspense is really pretty....well, suspenseful!! ;-D
