The Palimpsest: Literature, Criticism, Theory, by Sarah Dillon

Drawing together diverse literary, critical and theoretical texts in which the palimpsest has appeared since its inauguration by Thomas De Quincey in 1845, Palimpsest: Literature, Criticism, Theory provides the first ever genealogy of this metaphor. Sarah Dillon's original theorisation argues that the palimpsest has an involuted structure which illuminates and advances modern thought. While demonstrating how this structure refigures concepts such as history, subjectivity, temporality, metaphor, textuality and sexuality, Dillon returns repeatedly to the question of reading. This theorisation is interwoven with close readings of texts by D. H. Lawrence, Arthur Conan Doyle, Umberto Eco, Ian McEwan and H.D.
Clearly written, and negotiating a range of critical theories and modern literary texts, it provides a reference point and critical tool for future employment of the concept of 'palimpsestuousness', and makes a significant contribution to the debate surrounding the relationship between theoretical and critical writing on literature.

Review
'This is a compelling and original book, as multi-layered as its title might lead us to hope. Dillon offers a lucid and lively account of the history and development of the notion of palimpsest, from ancient history through to postcolonialism and queer theory. In a series of deft and insightful readings of De Quincey, Freud, Saussure, Barthes, Riffaterre, Genette, Kristeva and Derrida, as well as literary works by Arthur Conan Doyle, D.H. Lawrence, H.D., Umberto Eco and Ian McEwan, The Palimpsest renews and transforms our understanding of this curious topic.'Professor Nicholas Royle, University of Sussex -- Professor Nicholas Royle "Her chapters focus on a number of literary figures...but there is also a detailed account of the ways in which the palimpsestic - or 'palimpsestuous' - nature of Ian McEwan's Atonement affects our reading of that novel. Strengthening her meticulous analyses of individual texts are the equally detailed complementary readings. The Palimpsest manages to be that rare thing: a work of criticism that remains rigidly focused upon - and loyal to - its subject matter, without ever being afraid to draw on a wide range of different authors and disciplines to explore the significance of its one central metaphor."Modern Language Review, February 2009 'a tour de force of twentieth-century theory as well as an adventure in reading' - Forum for Modern Language Studies, May 21 2009 "Dillon engages wittily and at times brilliantly with Thomas De Quincey, D. H. Lawrence, Arthur Conan Doyle, Umberto Eco, Ian McEwan and H. D... [her] innovative work fills a cognitive gap by drawing together the history and theory of palimpsests and beginning to investigate how this fascinating concept can inform our understanding of literature. This book is a worthy rival to Gerard Genette Palimpsests (1997) (first published in French as Palimpsestes (1982)) and lays a foundation stone for further studies of the palimpsestuous quality of literature." - The Review of English Studies, New Series, Vol. 60, No. 244, Christopher Whalen 2008 "Dillon's book is very reader-friendly, witty and entertaining, which makes it approachable for both specialists and non-specialists alike...The Palimpsest is an excellent and significant work contributing to the discussion about the interconnecting roles of critical and theoretical writing that pushes beyond the boundaries of traditional clear-cut criticism. Dillon's work thus serves as a good reference point for future engagements with the paradigm of the palimpsest."Anglistik: International Journal of English Studies, September 2009 "...a fascinating history of the palimpsest which contextualises precisely why Dillon finds them so relevant for contemporary thinking, the book couples literature and theory in each chapter...a tour de force of twentieth-century theory as well as an adventure in reading which focuses refreshingly on literature not so usually in the literary headlights."Forum for Modern Language Studies, Vol 45 No.4 Briefly reviewed in the Year's work in English Studies journal, vol 89, No. 1 'Dillon's work explores the palimpsest metaphor through examining its history, its use by De Quincey, D.H. Lawrence, Arthur Conan Doyle, Umberto Eco, H.D., Ian McEwan and others'

Software for Use: A Practical Guide to the Models and Methods of Usage-Centered Design, by Larry L. Constantine, Lucy A. D. Lockwood

In the quest for quality, software developers have long focused on improving the internal architecture of their products. Larry L. Constantine--who originally created structured design to effect such improvement--now joins with well-known consultant Lucy A. D. Lockwood to turn the focus of software development to the external architecture. In this book, they present the models and methods of a revolutionary approach to software that will help programmers deliver more usable software--software that will enable users to accomplish their tasks with greater ease and efficiency.

Recognizing usability as the key to successful software, Constantine and Lockwood provide concrete tools and techniques that programmers can employ to meet that end. Much more than just another set of rules for good user-interface design, this book guides readers through a systematic software development process. This process, called usage-centered design, weaves together two major threads in software development methods: use cases (also used with UML) and essential modeling. With numerous examples and case studies of both conventional and specialized software applications, the authors illustrate what has been shown in practice to work and what has proved to be of greatest practical value.

Amazon.com Review
For anyone who designs applications or Web pages professionally, Software for Use provides an appealingly written guide to user interface design. This book delivers many valuable insights on improving interfaces for both desktop applications and Web sites.

A software design process is first presented that's centered on usability (with terms like "user roles," "use cases," and "interaction contexts"). Early sections have much to say about inadequate interfaces (using a number of Windows examples) and how to improve them. The book presents an argument for creating innovative and intuitable interfaces (often by rethinking time-honored Windows conventions).

The most provocative material here is the coverage of the Internet--the book argues that many Web sites sacrifice usability for visual razzle-dazzle, and it offers ways to organize Web sites for better usability. (A section on embedded devices looks at UI issues for these systems too.) A full case study of a user interface design for a corporate address book is included.

Software for Use makes a good case that there is room for improvement in today's user interfaces. This book is sure to be a valuable resource for anyone serious about improving the user's experience of software or Web sites. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Design processes; help systems and error messages; and interface creation for novice, intermediate, and advanced users.

Perseverence is required, as the text is a little dry and verbose. However, there are too many leading edge ideas to score it other than full marks. Advances the state-of-the-art in systems engineering by promoting thorough requirements engineering using interaction neutral Essential Use Cases and then good quality Interaction Design as an integrated part of the lifecycle

    An Informative and Enjoyable Read.
    By aharnden
For anyone in the business of delivering usable software, the book 'Software for Use' by Larry Constantine and Lucy Lockwood is a must addition to their personal library. This book is wonderfully written in a very readable format (as would be expected from usability experts).
'Software for Use' embraces the key principles of usability in a very pragmatic way. The book is also 'in tune' with trends in the field of usability: moving to a more collaborative team model; addressing usability as a proactive design process rather than a reactive QA function; rethinking technology, tools, & techniques for the purpose of delivering user-centric software products - these are all fundamental aspects of how usability is maturing as a discipline.
One of things I enjoyed most about the book, was its hidden gems of wisdom embedded in each chapter. For example, in discussing the issues of marketability versus usability, the authors offer this simple maxim: "Design for use; refine for sale.... It is almost always far easier to make a functional but unaesthetic system attractive, than to take an attractive but impractical system and make it work."
If I had any criticisms about this book, there would be only one. As with many of today's practical guides, I find there is a recurring challenge with terminology. It is sometimes difficult to identify terms that are 'standard' versus those being introduced by the authors as new. As practitioners we rely heavily on the clarity of words to communicate tasks and deliverables. When applied terms are unfamiliar in context and origin, or they suggest double meaning, we introduce cost and confusion to the process of communication. This is not so much a criticism of the book as it is an observation of humankind, and our struggle to expand the English language.
As the authors themselves note, 'usability is not rocket science,' but it takes time and effort to achieve. Usability needs to be experienced before it can be standardized within an organization. That is why 'Software for Use' is such a good book - it is an experiential guide.

A must-read for anyone involved with user interfaces
    By A Customer
I very much enjoyed Software for Use. When I got the book, I read it from cover to cover. Now, six months later, I still turn to it regularly as I develop use cases for our application - especially when I'm working on the user interface for each use case.
You might expect that anything from Larry Constantine would be terrific and again he - this time with equally adept co-author Lucy Lockwood - hasn't let us down. SfU (as it seems to be called in the chat groups) addresses one of the most under-addressed issues in our industry: Why is so much potentially useful software in fact useless because of its appalling user interfaces?
There are lots of valuable topics in this book. But probably the most valuable thing that I got from the book was a methodical approach to developing user interfaces, through the user role maps, task models, essential use cases, use case narrative, tools and materials and ... well, perhaps you should read the book!
If you're in the mood for some edutainment (i.e. cheap laughs while learning something handy), read the section on Web wisdom. There you'll find some wonderfully silly interface designs to avoid on your next e-commerce project.
Bottom line: I'll bet this book's on the way to becoming a classic. It's a "must read" for every software developer involved in any way with software that's meant to be used. And if you're actually charged with developing user interfaces, I'd say it's a "must own".

Win or Learn: MMA, Conor McGregor and Me: A Trainer's Journey, by John Kavanagh

Growing up in Dublin, John Kavanagh was bullied. After suffering a bad beating when he intervened to help a woman being attacked, he decided to learn to defend himself. Before long, he was training fighters in a tiny shed, and promoting the earliest mixed-martial arts events in Ireland. And then, a cocky kid called Conor McGregor walked into his gym. Here, Kavanagh tells his own remarkable life story —which is at the heart of the story of the explosion of MMA in Ireland and globally. Kavanagh has become a guru to young men and women seeking to master the arts of combat, and as McGregor's trainer, his gym has become a magnet for fighters from all over the world. Kavanagh's portrait of McGregor is a revelation. What emerges is a remarkable portrait of ambition, discipline, and persistence in the face of years and years of disappointment. It is a must read for every MMA fan—and anyone who wants to understand how to follow a dream and realize a vision.

A Great Story- Regardless of whether you are a fan of MMA
    By Brian
Hearing the story of SBG Ireland, Conor Mcgregor, and John Kavanagh told from the beginning of the story to present day from John Kavanagh's perspective made Win Or Learn a really enjoyable read. As others have noted,it is nearly impossible to put the book down once you start reading. While the media and fans in general focus primarily on Connor, there is a lot more to the story than just Conor's experience and personal struggles. The story is about John starting a gym geared toward MMA from scratch, despite having an Engineering degree and his parents thinking he was absolutely nuts, in a country that wasn't quite ready to really embrace MMA.... at the time. I think what makes their story truly special and what makes it resonate with so many people around the globe is that this is a story about a few people, through trial and immense tribulation, overcoming the odds while chasing a dream. Not only that, the emphasis they always put on how important their fans are and the country they come from should be a model any up and coming fighter, or person in general, could learn a lot from.

The mantra of John's gym is we win or we learn; thus, the name of the book. However, by purchasing this book you do both. If you are interested in MMA or you just want to read a great story of perseverance you should consider buying this book.

Outstanding! A 'MUST' read for MMA enthusiasts
    By Kindle Customer
Let me preface this by saying that i rarely finish a book. This is the first book i have finished in the past two years because every page, every chapter and every line kept me reading and turning. It's that good. After being introduced to Conor McGregor way back in the day. I was intrigued by this overly confident, cocky and cheeky guy and his history. That led me to John Kavanagh. Like any great story, including non fictional ones like Rocky. I'm always intrigued by who the trainer is. So often they are overlooked and people place a lot of attention on the fighter but i see fighting like a marriage. It's only as strong as the one beside you. In this case, Conors trainers. Anyway. This book takes you through an amazing journey that John went on. I saw a lot of myself in him as i was born around about the same time as him, and i remember what the martial arts scene was like back in those days. You learn about John, his home life, his troubles, his aspirations, his fears, his family and the ups and downs he experienced in trying to get SBG (Straight Blast Gym) going in the early days. It almost reads like a film script. I could picture in my head his upbringing all the way through to the day Conor walks into the gym and the relationship begins between the two of them. I loved the fact that he talked about his own fights, all the other fighters and their fights, depression, suicide of a fighter, overcoming emotional and pysical obstacles and ultimately what LEARNING really means. I will admit when i got to the last chapter and it ended on Conor's loss to Nate and how he would learn from it, i was like. No, it can't end there. But then i stepped back and i was like. Damn this is perfection! He shows you from beginning to end both WINNING and LEARNING. We all know that Conor returns and defeats Nate, and goes on to get that belt but what he does is show you in a realistic way that MMA is not for the faint hearted. It is a beautiful sport and yet brutal at times. But that no matter what happens, you either win or learn. I take my hat off to John, that was a beautiful book and the best one that i have read in the last 10 years. This is a must for any MMA trainer, MMA fighter or just folks who are fans of the sport. 5 STARS! Much success to you John, your family, and Conor. This was super inspiring.

I did not put this book down!!!

I am a huge mma enthusiast who pre-ordered this book. I have seen Coach Kavanaugh in videos and followed him on social media and so it goes without saying that I couldn't wait to see what his book had in store. I was not disappointed. This is an amazing story about a man who followed his dream, fell, got up and won. The writing flowed very smooth. It was straight forward but not dry. There's so much more behind Conor Mcgregor... There's SBG... And behind that, there's Coach John Kavanagh. A must read!!!

This is the first cross-cultural study of Chekhov's plays in production. Many now consider Chekhov a playwright equal to Shakespeare, and this book studies how the reputation evolved, and how the presentation of his plays varied and altered from their initial productions in Russia to the most recent postmodern deconstructions of them. Particular attention is given to the staging of Chekhov in Russia before and after the Revolution, and under different regimes; in the English-speaking world, in Western and Eastern Europe, as well as in Japan.

    Amazon.com Review
"Pb-pb-b-b-b. Pb-pb-b-b-b." With these magic vocables, Ralph the mouse revs up a dream come true--his very own motorcycle. Living in a knothole in a hotel room, young Ralph has seen plenty of families come and go, some more generous with their crumbs than others. But when young Keith and his parents check in to the hotel, Ralph gets his first chance to check out. He has always fantasized about venturing beyond the second floor, maybe even outside. Curiosity overcomes caution, and Ralph must have a go at Keith's toy motorcycle. Soon, the headstrong mouse finds himself in a pickle, when all he wanted was to ride a motorcycle. Lucky for him, the boy understands how it is. When he discovers Ralph in his thwarted attempt to abscond with the toy bike, Keith generously encourages the rodent to ride. He even teaches him the simple trick of starting the motorcycle: "You have to make a noise... pb-pb-b-b-b." The subsequent situations Ralph motors into require quick thinking and grownup-sized courage. The team of Beverly Cleary and Louis Darling has been a great favorite for decades, introducing young chapter readers to Ramona, Beezus, Henry, and of course Ralph the mouse. (Ages 8 and older) --Emilie Coulter

    Review
One might know that if Beverly Cleary were to invent a mouse, it would be a down-to-earth, boyish mouse with a proclivity for getting into scrapes. A good story! (Chicago Tribune)

    From the Inside Flap
    Read by William Roberts
    Two cassettes / 2 hours 25 mins.

All Ralph had wanted to do was ride the little motorcycle someone had left on the table in the hotel room where he lived. But soon a terrified Ralph finds himself trapped at the bottom of a wastepaper basket.

It's Ralph's lucky day when along comes Keith, the owner of the toy motorcycle, who teaches Ralph how to ride properly, and then turns him loose to enjoy the biking adventure of his life.

But adventure can be both fun a trouble...as Ralph and Keith soon find out!

After listening to the first 6 books of our favorite, Hank the Cowdog
    By Cheryl Reynolds
After listening to the first 6 books of our favorite, Hank the Cowdog, I decided to expand my 5 yo grandson's horizons with another of our family favorites. I have read all of them to my older children but this is the first we've listened to on cd. It is great. It captivated his interest from the start. I do have one minor negative to mention...the voice for Ralph's (the mouse) mother is very annoying to me. It sounds like a stereotypical Jewish or Bronx mother...but Ralph is from California. Regardless, it doesn't bother my grandson and that's what counts. I was surprised that Ralph speaks a little meanly to his little cousins and siblings (not remembering that from the books) but I make little comments to my grandson about it as it happens. We listened to Runaway Ralph right after this one. The next one is not available on cd that I could find, but I will be reading that one to my grandson. He can do the sound effects as I read.

Wonderful, nostalgic adventure story! Great for families
    By A.Benbow
Wonderful, clever book by Beverly Cleary telling the tale of a mouse, a young boy and (of course) a motorcycle. If you are my age (30s) you probably remember these books from growing up. Very nostalgic for my generation - and as I've found out, still very good for all kiddos!

Adjectives for this book include imaginative, adventuresome, clever and funny. Great gook to read aloud for families or perhaps having an older child read alone, I'd guess ages 5-9 would be well suited.

    What a little hero!
    By Ms Winston
I first read "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" to my son when he was a little boy, and we both loved it for its humor and its suspense (okay, we all know now that Ralph is not going to die, but having read such books as "Charlotte's Web," "Bambi." and "Old Yeller," that is not a sure thing!). For Christmas this year I gave the book to my granddaughter who is nine. She was familiar with Beverly Cleary and told me she looked forward to reading about Ralph the mouse. The edition I received from Amazon did not have the charming cover shown on the product page, but a more cartoonish Ralph doing wheeles on his motorcycle. I am not sure why there was a difference between what was shown on the product page and what I received. My personal preference is for the more realistic looking Ralph, but I do not think it made any difference to my granddaughter. The book itself is a timeless story of someone willing to risk his life to help another living creature - we should all be so lucky to know a Ralph.

    —Xiaolong Li, Indiana State University

“I have been teaching introductory programming courses since 1975, and programming in the C language since 1986. In the beginning there were no good textbooks on C—in fact, there weren’t any! When Deitel, C How to Program, 1/e [the textbook first version of this book], came out, we jumped on it—it was at the time clearly the best text on C. The new edition continues a tradition—it’s by far the best student-oriented textbook on programming in the C language—the Deitels have set the standard—again! A thorough, careful, student-oriented treatment of not just the language, but more importantly, the ideas, concepts and techniques of programming! ‘Live code’ is also a big plus, encouraging active participation by the reader. A great book!”

    —Richard Albright, Goldey-Beacom College

“I like the quality of the writing; it’s polished, well-structured, touches important topics and outlines common mistakes really well. Nice visualization of binary search. The card shuffling example illustrates a solution to the problem with great coding and explanation. Nice example on signal handling.”

    —Vytautus Leonavicius, Microsoft

“The control statements chapters are excellent. Great coverage of functions. The strings and characters discussion is easy to follow. The writing in the ‘Structures, Unions, Bit Manipulation and Enumerations’ chapter is very clear. The ‘Data Structures’ chapter is well written and the examples are great. The ‘Other Topics’ chapter does a good job closing the coverage of the C language with all those ‘little things.’”

—Jos Antonio Gonzlez Seco, Parliament of Andalusia, Spain

“Clearly demonstrates important C programming concepts. The introductory chapters are very good. The examples in the ‘Functions’ chapter were good. Just the right amount of coverage of arrays. The C Pointers chapter is well-written; the coverage is quite detailed. Excellent discussion of many of the string functions. Fine chapters on formatted input/output and files. Good introduction to data structures. I was pleased to see a hint at Big O running time in the binary search example. Good information in the preprocessor chapter.”

—Dr. John F. Doyle, Indiana University Southeast

“The Deitel book easily provides the clearest and most in-depth approach to standard C programming. With the Deitel C book, readers have a tremendous resource that will enable them to succeed in the professional workplace for years to come.”

    —William Smith, Tulsa Community College

“Covers material that will be useful the job market.”

—Fred J. Tydeman, Tydeman Consulting, Vice-Chair of J11 (ANSI C)

About as good a book for a thorough review of C as I've seen
    By Tom Betka
When I purchased this text, I hadn't done much serious C programming in a while. But since I knew the C language, I really didn't want to have to read through monotonous beginner programming materials. Since I have several other products published by Deitel & Associates, I suspected that the quality of this text would be good--and after taking a few minutes to search inside the book (a GREAT feature here on Amazon, by the way), my suspicion was confirmed and I purchased both the physical book and the electronic version. I then worked through the book over a period of about month, doing each and every code example--and then changing them, breaking them, fixing them, adding features to them, and whatever else I could think of to really get inside the material. By the end of the text I found that I have a MUCH better understanding of the C language, and feel very comfortable using it in my everyday coding endeavours. I definitely "know what I don't know" at this point, and thus find it much easier to get to the next level of C programming. And although I found a few small and relatively minor errata, I did not find the electronic version to be missing portions of code--so I cannot reproduce what Mr. Moore (another reviewer here) found 10 months prior to my review. So my suspicion is that the authors have taken the information from his review and simply fixed the electronic version of the text.

As I spent quite a bit of time going through this text and plan to use it heavily (mainly in the world of critical embedded systems development), I paid particular attention to the "Secure C Programming" sections at the end of most of the chapters. Although brief, I found these sections to be quite invaluable. I can understand how some people would like to see more material here, but there is so much to cover that I think the text would grow unnecessarily long if it were to be expanded much. Instead, I prefer the more brief description of potential issues, with references made to where I can go to find more information. In fact I used many (if not all) of these references, and found them to be extremely valuable. I also found the book to do a very good job at following the basic principles consistent with the MISRA guidelines, as well as the JPL coding standards. Any serious embedded systems developer (and I would argue any serious C developer) should be very familiar with most of these standards--because the industry you'll be working in seems to be extremely serious about them. Just Google for the recent (fall 2013) result of the Toyota Camry unintended acceleration suits and the firmware-related issues that came to light therein, to get a flavour of just how important these types of standards can be. So the concept of secure C programming is in fact very important, and one of the features I liked most about this book.

In the end, I found this book to be one of the best I've seen on the subject of a review of the C language for established programmers. If you are looking for a "hold-my-hand" guide to programming in the C language, then this book is probably not for you. Perhaps in that case you should check out one of the many beginning programming texts using the C language. However if, like me, you learned and used the C language in the past but hadn't done much with it for a few years, then this book is an excellent choice. It's relatively inexpensive, and it's quite easy to cover a chapter every 1-2 days...even doing all the code examples. I should mention that some might criticize the book for not having *enough* code examples, and that might be a legitimate complaint. However if you are an experienced programmer (the audience this book is intended for), then do you really need that many programming examples? I would argue that in fact you don't--and all that you really need is a thorough explanation of the syntax and logic of using the C language and the standard library functions, with a heavy emphasis on SAFETY in using these features. And in fact, this is exactly what this text does.

So in summary, this book has quickly become one of my favorite programming texts. It is brief, thorough on the important matters, and very relevant to my field of using C for safety-critical embedded systems. Most of all it gives me relative references that I can use to enhance my learning in the future. So for the price, I would highly recommend people consider this book.

    Too much fluff
    By David Li
As a long-time Python programmer seeing to move to lower-level work, I thought this book "for programmers" would be perfect. Unfortunately, this is barely above the level of an introductory book - there is simply too much fluff and unnecessary reference material. The book wastes a lot of time explaining irrelevant things like what Linux is, how to run a C program, and how to use if statements. I would rather have seen a more thorough discussion of topics important to C as an imperative language, like pointers - essentially, what I wanted was a quick runthrough of the language along with detailed discussion of best practices and idioms.

This book has some strong suits - the secure programming section at the end of each chapter was interesting, though short, and the C11 material was interesting (though it also felt tacked-on in order to give the book a more impressive title).

Overall this book gets the job done, but you are not getting your money's worth.

Another great text from Deitel and Deitel
    By J Batey
When you are looking to learn a new technology (or very old in this case, but still one of the best) the Deitel Developer series is nearly guaranteed to teach it effectively. I am a STEM educator, so I am picky about how things are taught and scaffolded and this book was great at cleary communicating how C works - it does not merely give an example to copy and paste and then move on. The authors clearly know their content and explain every example in great detail. I would also HIGHLY recommend their Java for Programmers edition with 7 se included - another great buy.

Maternity Leave: A Novel, by Julie Halpern

Julie Halpern's Maternity Leave tells the profane, profound and just plain funny story of a professional woman who thinks she's ready for a baby but her maternity leave proves otherwise.

Thirty six year old Annie Schwartz-Jensen is a middle school teacher on maternity leave-a time she imagined as uninterrupted, blissful bonding with her baby. Instead she is dealing with her body leaking from every possible orifice, a baby who won't sleep, a husband who still wants to have sex with her (is he nuts??), single friends who are clueless, and a mother who picked now to take a vacation. The only people who REALLY understand Annie are the wonderful people she spends sleepless nights with on QVC: Keep those velveteen table runners and non-jiggle stretch pants coming!

As Annie navigates life with her new baby, she realizes that not all Mommies are created equal. But she is determined to find her way, love her baby, her husband, herself---even if she has to wear nipple protectors for the rest of her child-bearing life.

    Review

“Those first few days after you’ve popped out your brand-new baby are epic, and author Julie Halpern depicts this roller coaster with wit, warmth, and authenticity in her novel Maternity Leave. Edgy yet still breezy, this novel flies by faster than those weeks on maternity leave. Read it with a baby on your boob for relatable belly laughs.” ―PARENTS Magazine

“It is exactly what its title suggests: the story of a first maternity leave, of coming to grips with that all-consuming yet often maddening few weeks after the arrival of a baby. This is a book for readers who did not love their child's infancy; if that's you, expect flashbacks.” ―New York Times's Motherlode

“The novel follows a 36-year-old middle school teacher who humorously attempts to navigate maternity leave, body issues, childless friends and late night QVC watching following the birth of her child.” ―Chicago Tribune

    “Hilarious and perceptive.” ―Library Journal

“Maternity Leave is the laugh-out-loud funny novel you'll beg all your "mommy" friends to read, and also a keenly observed portrayal of the most challenging time of life, so complex and unpredictable that all the parenting how-to books in the world aren't enough to prep you for -the first three months of your child's life.” ―Julia Fierro, author of Cutting Teeth

“Maternity Leave is a hilarious, poignant, almost painfully accurate look at the first few months of motherhood. It begins with a hysterical birth scene and takes us through Annie's transformation from a self-involved, Buffy-obsessed geek-type person into a full-fledged mom, all without losing her basic identity. It's warm and funny and very, very real. I loved this book!” ―Maddie Dawson, author of The Opposite of Maybe

    She read my mind!
    By Julie
I am was a high school teacher who returned to work with my first. I had my son late in February and did not go back until the next school year; very similar to the story. I am now a stay at home mom with my second; she is 5.5 months old and I am finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. Both babies were/are extremely fussy. I miss my old easy life like crazy most days. I struggle daily with breastfeeding and have wanted to quit countless times. There are still days where I feel as though my baby hates me! Luckily I have a wonderful almost 6 year old who gives me hope that this will pass. I will not miss these days like everyone says. My baby never liked to cuddle or be rocked. There is little anyone can do to comfort her. But little by little it is getting better. One day life may feel "normal" again. It was nice to read a story about the hard, not really talked about parts, of having a baby.

    Spot on!
    By Fluff Smut & Murder
I began this book on the eve of my daughter’s 16th birthday. What a pleasure to go back to the days when she was so little!

What I loved: I completely understood every moment Annie was going through as a new mother – the good the bad and the horrible poops. It made me feel so much better that there was someone else going through exactly what I did – even if it is just a fiction.

What I didn’t love: I would have loved to see more interaction with Zach’s side of the family as well as find out what really happened with her friend Fran’s marriage. Both of those plotlines kind of left me hanging and wanting more.

What I learned: They do really grow up so fast, even when you think every minute lasts an hour.

    Overall Grade: B+

Brings the complexity and hilarity of early motherhood to life!
    By Stephanie
After reading many of Julie's YA novels, I was curious to see how she'd tackle an "adult" story. Not surprisingly, her gift for creating characters who are smart, funny, and instantly relatable shines through this novel. I laughed out loud (for real) and nodded at nearly every page. Memories of my own children as infants rushed back to me as I read. I appreciate that Julie is not afraid to tackle the embarrassing and potentially disturbing mental state of early motherhood. Anyone who has ever cared for a baby will recognize the emotional roller coaster ride in this book. You'll finish the book feeling like you've spent the morning having coffee with an old friend. Good stuff.
