About the Author

Charles W. L. Hill is the Hughes M. Blake Professor of International Business at the School of Business, University of Washington. Professor Hill received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in Britain. In addition to the University of Washington, he has served on the faculties of UMIST, Texas A&M University, and Michigan State University.
Professor Hill has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science. He has also published two college texts: one on strategic management and the other on international business. Professor Hill has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science. Between 1993 and 1996, he was consulting editor at the Academy of Management Review.
Professor Hill teaches in the MBA, Executive MBA, Management, and Ph.D. programs at the University of Washington. He has received awards for teaching excellence in the MBA, Executive MBA, and Management programs. He has also taught customized executive programs.
Professor Hill works on a consulting basis with a number of organizations. His clients have included ATL, Boeing, BF Goodrich, Hexcel, House of Fraser, Microsoft, Seattle City Light, Tacoma City Light, Thompson Financial Services, and Wizards of the Coast.

Informative textbook, bargain edition!

The international edition of the 7th edition of International Business is a steal! It's the same as the hardcover US edition textbook word for word, but it's about $80 cheaper. As far as the textbook itself, it is very informative and easy to read.

A recommended textbook for undergraduates

I have used Charles Hill's textbook since 5th edition - it is now in 8th. While some aspects do dip into the arcane, especially economic theory, the book is the best I have found to produce a solid basis for an introduction to international business.

That said, in my view the textbook is not enough. The instructor must use resources such as the NY Times, WSJ and Economist. This is a very fast changing business field, and is headline driven. Relying solely on this textbook offers the students too little insights into fast changing paradigms and models.

Warning to instructors - the class supplements (Ppt charts, exam questions) have gotten weaker and you will need to supplement them with the above resources to ensure a vibrant and modern classroom experience.

Comprehensive text actually worth reading!

Well written text that covers many import international business topics. The charts and graphs are up to date. The case studies are very helpful. All in all a great text. It is one of the most read texts I have ever owned (and I am an engineer).

Still the original classic

Although ZBB is somewhat less in use today than when Peter Pyhrr introduced it in this book, it has undergone a number of refinements. In the current business, economic and public budger difficulties, this deserves a re-look. Although few organizations use the process on a regular annual budgeting cycle, it remains highly appropriate every 3-5 years. Why? I've always argued it is not a process of draconian, budget cutting, gore your oxen. (Although that's what the name unfortunately suggests.) Rather it is a disciplined process of seeking out and assessing creative alternatives to do the job better, or more productively.

Sometimes this does result in less spending. But more often, it results in increased spending, but with substantially higher benefits.

Still the best book around to demonstrate the best principals and practices for creating non-incremental budgets. Very worthwhile read for those in the field.

James Crawford is Whewell Professor of International Law and a Fellow of Jesus College in the University of Cambridge and concurrently Research Professor of Law at LaTrobe University. He previously held chairs at Adelaide and Sydney. He is a Senior Counsel (NSW) and also a member of the English bar, practicing from Matrix Chambers. He was the first Australian member of the United Nations International Law Commission and was responsible for the ILC's work on the International Criminal Court (1992-4) and for the second reading of the ILC Articles on State Responsibility (1997-2001). In addition to scholarly work on statehood, collective rights, investment law and international responsibility, he has appeared frequently before the International Court of Justice and other international tribunals, and is engaged as expert, counsel and arbitrator in international arbitration. From 1995-2003 and from 2006-10 he was Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law in the University of Cambridge.

international standards

I have used the previous editions very frequently especially during my time working abroad. This is the only comprehensive source of metric and International standards for design data that I am aware of and is organized in very readable way. In fact, when I introduced the book to my co-workers abroad, everyone bought a copy. It is a great book for rules-of-thumb reference for designing buildings, spaces and layouts for national and especially International standards.

Useful book for preliminary design phases

It was in our varsity library where I opened "Neufert" for the first time back in late 70s (they had a two-volume Russian version). Amazingly, then as I studied Architecture I was rather impressed by a broad selection of examples of Western Architecture than by reference data themselves. Now I am more interested in the latter... And the newly edition I have surely provides that! You may blame it for slightly outdated materials or general incompleteness. But, remember, those features are generic for sources like this. Instead the book is useful specifically at preliminary design phases when an architect needs the most general guidelines. You can quickly navigate in a fat volume and can get desired information easily and in full. The only drawback, I think, is that the book is rather based on a continental (mostly German) and British content which can be somewhat inconvenient for, say, an American reader.

A Genuine Public Service

An American Sickness is a gripping, fast paced and revolting dive from 50,000 feet above into the morass of what passes for healthcare in the USA. Patients are barely tolerated in a system optimized to pass money from bank accounts to providers. The industry is mean, nasty and greedy, with worse results than comparable nations - for far more cost. Everything you feared is true, and there is much more in these 400 pages.

Because Rosenthal (an MD herself) was a columnist for the New York Times, she received thousands of contacts over the years. She researched them and they provide the vivid and shameful examples of financial abuse in the industry (with real names). She has distilled them into a perverse list of principles of US healthcare that explains everything and forms the backbone of the book:

1. More treatment is always better. Default to the most expensive treatment.
2. A lifetime of treatment is preferable to a cure.
3. Amenities and marketing matter more than good care.
4. As technologies age, prices go up rather than fall.
5. There is no free choice. Patients are stuck. And they’re stuck buying American.
6. More competition vying for business doesn’t mean better prices. It can drive prices up, not down.
7. Economies of scale don’t translate to lower prices. With their market power, big providers can simply demand more.
8. There is no such thing as a fixed price for a procedure or test. And the uninsured pay the highest prices of all.
9. There are no standards for billing. There’s money to be made in billing for anything and everything.
10. Prices will rise to whatever the market will bear.

As the American economy freefalls into dysfunction, doctors and nurses have become “independent contractors”, just like everyone else. They must look out for themselves first. Administrators are no longer senior caregivers but numbers people who must limit the poorly insured and maximize the profit on every square foot.

What becomes obvious is that the “market” system has failed utterly and completely. Health cannot be left to capitalists, be they doctors, hospitals or manufacturers. The rest of the western world and history are the proof: “If the March of Dimes was operating according to today’s foundation models, we’d have iron lungs in five different colors controlled by iPhone apps – but we wouldn’t have a cheap polio vaccine,” Rosenthal quotes Dr. Michael Brownlee. The incentives are all wrong.

An American Sickness is a public service. It gathers, for the first time I know of, the various scams used by the professions to jack up bills. It explains the why and the how of all those bills being so high. It is well organized, clear and it puts everything into perspective as part of a greater scheme. It identifies what to look out for, what to ask, and how to skirt the event horizon. Rosenthal provides really useful links and sample letters, because customers are all in this same situation – ignorant and powerless. I particularly like her examination of prices for the same procedures around the world. You can afford to have treatments elsewhere, because the costs are so much less, that you can throw in the travel – for two – and still come out well ahead. This book is worth far more than a month’s health insurance; it can save you a fortune, and give you back your life.

I have been a nurse since 1978 and have had a front row seat to the changes in health care in the ensuing decades. I teach health policy and am amazed at what I didn't know about the way our health care system is financed. It is appalling. You should be scared. You should read this book and work for change.

How healthcare got this way

Not a subject matter I would normally be interested in, but in the current political climate I felt I should get a better understanding of what is going on in the healthcare industries. The four chapters on the history of the American heath insurance industry, hospitals, doctors and pharmaceutical industry alone make the book worthwhile to read.

I am not a big fan of the government getting involved in healthcare, however if we are going to let free enterprise control the costs I think it is important to know if the healthcare industries will respond to true competition like other industries such as the telecommunication and automotive industries. This book says it will not because it is functionally different. For example only 18% of hospitals are for profit. The 62% majority are nonprofit hospitals that get billions of dollars in tax breaks if they use their profits to help the poor. The government runs the other 20%. If nonprofits make too much money they just spend more. As court case after court case indicates they do not always spend those big profits to help the poor. You also learn the average of how much the pharmaceutical companies actually spend on research and development of a new drug. It is not always the billion dollar figure you hear so much about.

I am sure once conservatives learn that the author is a Harvard Medical School trained doctor that now writes for the New York Times they will discount it as biased against business and not accurate. However, the question is not the author's political leanings, but is the information correct? I have checked some, but not all, of what the author has stated and so far it checks out.

About the Author
Dan Abnett is the author of the Horus Heresy novels The Unremembered Empire, Know No Fear and Prospero Burns, the last two of which were both New York Times bestsellers. He has written almost fifty novels, including the acclaimed Gaunt’s Ghosts series, and the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies. He scripted Macragge’s Honour, the first Horus Heresy graphic novel, as well as numerous audio dramas and short stories set in the Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer universes. He lives and works in Maidstone, Kent.

Abnett is Gifted

I didn't like this book nearly as much as First & Only (or Eye of Terror), but it was still a fun read. I really got sucked in to the characters from the first book and wanted to follow their further exploits. While First & Only had a strong plot that held it together, this book is more of a collection of war stories. They read like they may have already appeared in Inferno! (the Warhammer fiction zine). I'm not a big fan of straight combat/action fiction, so this was somewhat disappointing. What saves it is the fact that Abnett is a truly great writer who really rises above this genre of game fiction. The war stories are interrupted by these almost poetic tableaus of the Tanith troops between battles: A soldier obsessively cleaning his gun, the MASH unit quiet and waiting for the coming onslaught of carnage, a General sharing coffee and small talk with the company cook. These bits are very effective counterpoint to the ferocious battles of the surrounding chapters.
I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next "Gaunt's Ghosts" book, I just hope that Abnett spends more time developing a compelling story arc and less time on the battlefield reportage.

A good sequel to Tanith First and Only

Dan Abnett follows up his first Gaunt's Ghosts novel --- Tanith First and Only --- with Ghostmaker and he does a good job to keep fans of the original hooked with the story. It doesn't rise above the original, but the characterization of major and secondary characters are explored abit further.

Ghostmaker also further explains the current Crusade campaign the regiment is on. Politics become an issue as well. Jealousy from other regiments with a more storied history helps add abit of a subplot to the main story. Gaunt and his men are put through the wringer as they accept missions or put into dangerous situations that slowly dwindle their numbers. This is sad and poignant for the fact that without a homeworld to call home anymore, they have no way of replenishing their regiment like other Imperial Guard units. This also means that for every Tanith who falls in battle, more of their homeworld and people's culture disappear. It really adds meaning to the title of Ghostmaker.

I would recommend this book to those who have read the first and still contemplating as to whether to pick up this sequel.

I don't know why people don't like this book, it's awesome!

This is the second book in the Gaunts Ghost series, and while it's not the best Ghost's book, it's still a five star book. With a huge number of different characters in the books, I think this was a great idea for the series. Dan abnett was able to give more dimension to the characters and there past, which he brought to life in First and only.
Yes, this book is pretty much a collection of short stories and each story focus's on a different character. I personally don't like short stories, but the way Ghostmarker was written was awesome. The thing I don't like short stories is there short! they don't leave any time for character development and in less then an hour they are done. In ghostmaker, the short stories were there to show the character, and show their past, and why they are so attached to it.
Gaunt's Ghost is one of my favorite series of novels, and Ghostmaker is a must read for any fan of warhammer 40k or military sci-fi.

GREAT!

I just recently purchased this book and it was one that was difficult to put down. While there were a few bits that I didn't find too terribly funny, the vast majority of them were very funny. Some of his bits were even laugh out loud hysterical. This book is grouped up into what the different stand-up routines are about, which I liked because it was well organized and jokes weren't just thrown around randomly. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who's a fan of the comedian and the character Jerry Seinfeld.

Easy reading, but probably for fans only

I received this book in hard cover format as a gift, being a fan of the show and stand up performances, and enjoyed it tremendously. That having been said, it is a not much more than a light reading experience, and at under 200 pages (mostly lightly filled) is little more than a mirror of his most well known material. Fans like myself will not be disappointed, but this is not an insightful expose of what makes Jerry tick, and moreover is really just selling ice to eskimos. Good fun, but don't expect too much
