I enjoyed this book because my family is of eastern European Jewish stock and I never knew very much about Jewish history in western Europe. The Jews of Europe After the Black Death is a fascinating overview of six hundred years of Jewish life in England, France,Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Germany. It has a chapter on the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Jews that explains the origins of the Church's age-old position on the Jews. Another chapter talks about Jewish identity: what makes everyday Jewish life different from that of Christians. A short afterword discusses Zionism and the Holocaust. For someone interested in European history, Jewish history, of Church history, this is the one book to read.

Not for the lay person

This book assumes that you already have a strong knowledge of both European Medieval history and the history of the Catholic church, including its' structure and laws. I found myself turning back through the book to see if I had missed something- and that was just in the first 2 chapters. This book reads like an advanced college text book, which is probably the intention. While I understand that the basis of the book is far from being a "light" subject, I think more of an effort could have been placed on making it readable.

So many fine works of European history are lost to English speakers, either through poor translations or no translations at all. Not so with Anna Foa's panoramic sweep of 5+ centuries of Jewish life in Europe. A densely-packed treat for the general reader and scholar alike, with a marvelously light and fluent translation from the Italian by cultural historian Andrea Grover.
A real treasure for any history buff!

The Only Way to Build a Better Body

I sought more information on High Intensity training after reading a debate of volume training vs. High Intensity by Mike Mentzer and Dr. Stone in All Natural Muscular Development Magazine. Prior to reading the article I had not heard of High Intensity training. After reading the article I realized that I had no basic principles upon which I was building my training program. I would read an article in Flex and follow that, then another in MM2K and follow that; some routines produced results and some did not. I purchased the tape series and listened several times to each tape. I was apprehensive about trying the program because I too suffered from the notion that if I was not training 4 days a week for two hours I would lose my hard earned gains. Finally, I decided to follow the program and follow it exactly. I decided that even if the training program was wrong, I was better off having a rational basis for what I was doing and why I was doing it, then continuing to follow the next magazine article. The program presented also made a lot of sense. The results were nothing short of spectacular. For a 41 year old gu y I am very impressed. The information presented on the tapes is clear and easy to follow. I highly recommend this tape series to anyone who is serious about building a better body. Like me, it may also help you the think more critically about many other aspects of your life. Thanks Mike

Needed: less philosophy, more fitness. Otherwise, GREAT!

Mentzer's approach to strength building is exactly what we need - a true plan that really works! I've used this protocal now for almost 3 months and the results are fantastic. I am 52 and I have become more muscular now than ever in my life. What a relief to find out that you don't have to be a gym rat to achieve a physique that gets second looks.
A disappointment is the proportion of the tapes spent on philosophy. Only about half of the set concerns exercises and diet. I would have liked much more description of the exercises and why these particular routines were chosen. We are asked to have faith that they are the best. Incidently, having faith in what we are told is exactly what we are asked not to do in the philosophical Tape 1. I would describe the exercises in the sequencing chosen, however, as elegent. Only one suggestion from my experience - combine superslow cadence with High Intensity.
If you would like to build muscle, you won't find a more rational or efficient technique.

This once-wealthy city is now sparsely populated since the majority of its inhabitants have died of the plague. Freya, the last of the royal family line, is the unlikely ruler, a petulant girl of 16. She believes Pennyroyal's tales of having seen green, fertile areas in the otherwise "Dead Continent" of America and rashly decides that her traction city will go there. Hester's jealousy of Tom's infatuation for Freya's plump prettiness compels her to commit an act of betrayal that sets a series of events in motion that includes murder, intrigue, revenge, daring rescues, kidnapping, torture, "lost boys," and resurrection of the dead. This exciting and compelling novel unfolds at breakneck speed with abundant plots and characters but readers won't have any trouble following along. It has more humor and fewer deaths than its predecessor but the characters continue to find themselves in moral quagmires. Scrambling to escape, they head north and land on the city of Anchorage, a small, nonpredator city that traces its name back to old America. Anchorage's young ruler has decided that the wheeled city will make its way over the frozen wastes back to the Dead Continent, and the vicious predator city Arkangel is following along right behind. Add to that a gang of Lost Boys, recruited and trained to infiltrate and burgle cities while its leader, Uncle, foments more nefarious plans. Despite Reeve's frequent flipping back and forth to tell the stories of various characters, this vividly told novel, the second in the Hungry City Chronicles, is still easy to follow; it's also gripping enough to leave readers anxious to find out what's to come. Overview of Mass Communication Theories

Logically enough the authors begin with a chronological sequence of events in the study of mass communication. They talk about the theories, assumptions, and personalities who shaped the field in its infancy. Various media forms are given attention in subsequent chapters.
A seque is made to viewing media holistically from a systems perspective. From here we're taken to a discussion of media effects. This section of the book starts with the assumptions of the magic bullet theory in the early days of media research. It is explained how these assumptions and early theoretical works proved inadequate to explain the complexities of the actual workings of media upon audiences.
In the final section of the book media in contemporary society is addressed. This book accomplishes its goal of providing a history of media research and bringing readers up to date on current theoretical thought.

Excellent Mass Comm Theories

This book was excellent at explaining in detail some excellent well known and lesser known mass comm theories. Not only does the book give excellent theories but also gives numerous examples of how these theories apply to daily life and the many facets of communication as a whole. Well worth the price and the time. Especially helpful if working on a thesis.

An indispensible reference book, updated for the electronic age

Don't think this is a book strictly on military etiquette - it's a book on etiquette that features information on some military-specific issues. For example, Section III on "Communications Etiquette" and Section IV on "Good Manners and Civility" should be mandatory reading for every adult. Needless to say, this book covers a lot of topics that everyone should learn.

Section I focuses on US Government and Military protocol. This covers basic topics such as addressing officers and dignitaries; to more elaborate lessons on military ceremonies such as funerals and the fallen comrade table observance.

Section II is dedicated to military weddings. As an example of the authors' helpful advice, they provide a tip to have the parents write "in-laws letters". In this letter, the in-laws share how they want their newest family member to address them.

The final section, titled "International Considerations" covers topics such as international travel; chopsticks protocol; and food & drink preferences of various groups.

The previous editions have been indispensible reference books. This fifth edition has been updated to include lessons on modern electronics etiquette for email and cell-phone use. This book needs to be in the library of every military officer, and the front office of any organization that deals with the military on a regular basis.

A Must Have for Service Members

I had already purchased the fourth edition earlier, but when the new fifth edition came out, I wanted to upgrade. Not only was it an outstanding reference manual, but when I first got it in the mail, I began to read it from cover to cover. The attractive cover caught the interest of my fellow Navy ROTC Midshipmen, and they all wanted to borrow it. I am going to strongly recomend to my NROTC unit, as well as the Army and Air Force units at our school, that this book needs to be purchased by each of the aspiring officers.

Perfect engagement or wedding shower gift for the Bride and Groom and both sets of their Parents. It is what used to be taught as a matter of course before 1970 in public school as part of 'Civics and Business/Social Survival Class' but has fallen victim to 'progressive educational theories' that have utterly failed.

The text addresses the fundamental concepts found in a traditional Finite Mathematics/Business Calculus book but also contains Microsoft Excel problems and Case Studies not typically found in other textbooks.

I would describe this as a very approachable book for students. Pairing the combination of the conversational tone, the meaningful problems (Facebook, iPods, etc), along with the interactive tutorials, it is really a book that can provide the students with a meaningful mathematical experience.

About the Author
Stefan Waner and Steven R. Costenoble both received their Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, having studied several years apart with the same advisor, J. Peter May. Their paths merged when Steven joined Stefan at Hofstra University in 1987; since then they have coauthored 18 research papers as well as a research-level monograph in algebraic topology. By the early 1990s they had become dissatisfied with many of the Finite Mathematics and Applied Calculus textbooks. They wanted textbooks that were more readable and relevant to students' interests, containing examples and exercises that were interesting, and reflected the interactive approaches and techniques they found worked well with their own students. It therefore seemed natural to extend their research collaboration to a joint textbook writing project that expressed these ideals. To this day, they continue to work together on their textbook projects, their research in algebraic topology, and their teaching.
