A judicious and comprehensive study of MacArthur's pre-WWII years

There are few figures in American history who have generated as much controversy as Douglas MacArthur. From the first, he was a man about whom few were neutral, with a military career that brought him great acclaim and a personality that led many to despise him. This polarization is what makes D. Clayton James's achievement all the more remarkable. In this book, the first volume of a three-volume biography about the man, James succeeds in avoiding the extremes of hagiography or demonization, instead presenting a balanced assessment of the first six decades of MacArthur's long and historic life.

James begins by examining Douglas MacArthur's considerable military heritage. The son of Arthur MacArthur, a Civil War hero who went on to become military governor of the Philippines, Douglas grew up an "Army brat", accompanying his father as he moved from posting to posting. Excelling at West Point, where he graduated at the top of his class, he served a few years as an engineer before transferring to the infantry. MacArthur rose quickly through a combination of his own abilities and well-positioned friends, reaching the rank of brigadier general by the end of the First World War. After the war, he served in a number of prominent commands, including a period as superintendent of West Point (where he modernized much of the curriculum) before becoming the Army Chief of Staff in 1930. Yet for all of his success his career was colored by dramatic self-promotion, an almost paranoid suspicion of perceived rivals, and political controversy, and many were happy to see him leave as Chief of Staff for service abroad as military adviser in the Philippines. There, in spite of tight budgets and other problems, he endeavored to improve the colony's defenses against invasion, one he is on the verge of facing when James ends the book.

Though published forty years ago, James's book remains the starting point for anyone seeking to learn about MacArthur's career before the Second World War. This is due in equal parts to the author's judiciousness, the extensiveness of his research, and the thoroughness with which he examines his subject. James does not hesitate to judge MacArthur, yet his judgments about such controversies as the attack on the Bonus Marchers are fair and well supported by the evidence. Overall, this book is an indispensable study of MacArthur's early years and a good start to the definitive study of a accomplished and divisive figure.

About the Author

Gerard Guthrie has been Managing Director of Guthrie Development Consultancy Pty Ltd., Canberra since 2004. He is a Doctor of Philosophy in Education. An educationalist with around 40 years of experience, his career has had two main parts: one as an academic, and the other as a governmental aid official. He has worked in universities, aid management and aid consultancy in Asia, Africa and the South Pacific, particularly China and Papua New Guinea, and also, briefly, in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Botswana, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Dr Guthrie has a background in development theory and practice and in social science research. He has postgraduate degrees in geography, social science and education, with over 180 publications and papers to his name. His own research has included major projects on migration, teacher education and crime victimisation, as well as aid activity design and evaluation. His publications include: Cherbourg: A Queensland Aboriginal Reserve (1977); Mt. Hagen Community Crime Survey, 2006, co-authored with F. Hukula and J. Laki (2007); Urban Crime Victimisation in Papua New Guinea, 2004–2008: A Synthesis (2008); and The Progressive Education Fallacy in Developing Countries: In Favour of Formalism (2010).

Excellent Introduction to Research Methods

The book is shorter than other texts, but the author doesn't waste space so you are not missing out on any of the basic knowledge. For each topic, he also presents examples to illustrate his points. I thought this was very useful. He also gives recommendations for further reading if the reader wanted more expansive coverage of a given topic. Overall, a very good introduction to research methods.

A concise semi-technical intro

Your body has approximately 10^13 cells in it. And yet there are approximately 10^14 microbes crawling all over your skin, inside your respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and other, um, 'nether regions'. This is a vibrant and very complex ecosystem we carry around on, and in, us. In the gastrointestinal tract alone there may be over 400 different types of microbes!
Tannock, professor of microbiology, author also of _Medical Importance of the Normal Microflora_ and _Probiotics: A Critical Review_, gives us here an overview of the remarkable preponderance of the indigenous microbiota. The book straddles the line somewhat between a general readership book and a book for students of microbiology, although it definitely leans toward the latter. For the astute layperson, it contains many fascinating bits of information. Indeed, I would like to see Tannock come out with a longer version aimed squarely at the general science readership.
Chapters are as follows:
1. More than a smell: the complexity of the normal microflora
2. Happy Birthday: the acquisition of the normal microflora
3. Sticky Microbes: the association of microbes with host surfaces
4. Invisible forces: the influence of the normal microflora on host characteristics

At just over 100 pages, it is a quick read, despite some technical text. References at the end of each chapter are to professional journals and textbooks. Perhaps it is because of the book not catering exactly to a particular category of reader that has made it scarce, but whatever the reason, I had a hard time ordering this book through Amazon and ended up getting it via Kluwer Academic Publishers in Norwell, Mass.
As in his other books, Tannock conveys the interdependencies of our symbiosis with the microflora, and as he says in this Preface:
"Our relationship with the normal microflora provide excellent examples of ecological balances that have evolved between species, and the repercussions that ensue should the balance be tilted in favour of one or another partner. An appreciation of this concept is important for all those who study biological sciences."

Ordering for second time

I love this book! I'm a 4th year medical student and I have 3 other texts on immunology and this is the one that I keep going back to. I loaned it to a friend and it burned in a fire so here I am ordering it again. The text is simple and to the point. The diagrams are suitable and I found them detailed enough. This is my bedtime reading book.

An outstanding introduction to the principles of immunology.

This book, with good color graphics and easy to understand
descriptions of immunological processes, is the best
introduction to the field that I have read. It is clearly
written and all of the information is presented in language
that informs rather than confuses the reader. The
authors do a very good job of balancing the conflicting
demands of scientific rigor and readability. At the end of
the book, I felt that I had a firm grasp of the principles
of immunology and the knowledge to approach more advanced
and technical works. I highly recommend the book to anyone
interested in developing a firm understanding of the basic
science of immunology.

A great introduction to immunology

This book is a great introduction to immunology. Many other immunology books have too much information to absorb, but this book is as brief as possible without sacrificing clarity. I especially liked the review questions and ample references at the end of each chapter.

Toews at her best

Miriam Toews has done it again. Her latest book is touching and funny, sad and life-affirming, thought-provoking and nuanced. Drawing on her own personal experience it’s the story of two close and loving sisters. Yolandi and Elfrieda. Elf is a gifted pianist, happily married, but prey to depression and an urge to kill herself. Yoli is committed to keeping her alive. But is the kindest thing, the right thing, perhaps to let her sister go? Perceptive and wise, with totally believable characters, the novel tackles serious issues with compassion and a deep understanding of the complexities of family life and loyalties, the heartbreak of mental illness, and the trauma of suicide and how it affects everyone concerned.

Perfection.

This is the best book I've read all year. The mastery of heart ripping is ripe in this. As someone who suffers from Depression it was interesting to read. The author really lets you see both sides of depression so well. On one hand I was on the families side and furious at Elf for being so damn selfish. Then by the next chapter I would be in Elf's corner yelling" Just let her go already!" For me this book made the topic of depression/suicide impossible to solve, and I kind of like it for that. Sometimes there is no right and wrong, there just is.

Excellent Book!

This book is a truly great book if you would like to learn about diesel emission control. The authors have done a really good job in keeping each chapter fairly independent while maintaining the logical flow of the book. They also cover a wide range of topics from engine design to regulations and aftertreatment. Overall, I think this book creates a strong foundation for a good understanding of diesel emissions and control. I do recommend it to all scientists and engineers who are interested in the field.

About the Author

George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, where he has also been a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and won a Teaching Excellence Award. He was awarded the Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award by the American Sociological Association, an honorary doctorate from LaTrobe University in Australia, and the Robin Williams Lectureship from the Eastern Sociological Society. His best-known work, The McDonaldization of Society (8th ed.), has been read by hundreds of thousands of students over two decades and translated into over a dozen languages. Ritzer is also the editor of McDonaldization: The Reader; and author of other works of critical sociology related to the McDonaldization thesis, including Enchanting a Disenchanted World, The Globalization of Nothing, Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society, as well as a series best-selling social theory textbooks and Globalization: A Basic Text. He is the Editor of the Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2 vols.), the Encyclopedia of Sociology (11 vols.; 2nd edition forthcoming), the Encyclopedia of Globalization (5 vols.), and is Founding Editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. About the Author

Mary Connerley is Associate Professor, Department of Management, Pamplin College of Business,Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Before coming to Virginia Tech, Dr. Connerley worked for five years with the Executive Development Program at the University of Iowa where her responsibilities included evaluating the entire program for thoroughness and continuity and serving as liaison between executives and faculty. Dr. Connerley has taught courses at the undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral levels, including Principles of Management, Human Resource Management, Staffing, Training and Development, and Managing Diversity in the Workplace. She has also been involved as a Management and Professional Development Program Facilitator. Her most recent programs have dealt with acquiring and keeping good employees and managing a multi-generational workforce.

Dr. Connerley has been an active researcher and has published articles in journals such as Personnel Psychology, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Human Relations, as well as others. Her current research interests include various aspects of the staffing process, performance evaluation, and diversity. Honors for Dr. Connerley include being selected as a Multicultural Fellow at Virginia Tech, receiving a Pamplin College of Business Teaching Excellence Award, and receiving two Citations of Excellence for her research.

Paul B. Pedersen is a visiting professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Hawaii and professor emeritus at Syracuse University. He has taught at the University of Minnesota, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and for six years at universities in Taiwan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Pedersen was also on the summer school faculty at Harvard University, 1984-988 and the University of Pittsburgh “semester at sea” voyage around the world, spring 1992. International experience includes numerous consulting experiences in Asia, Australia, Africa, South America and Europe, and a Senior Fulbright award teaching at National Taiwan University 1999-2000. He has authored, co-authored or edited 40 books, 99 articles, and 72 chapters on aspects of multicultural counseling and international communication. Pedersen is a fellow in Divisions 9, 17, 45 and 52 of the American Psychological Association.�

This book is well written and easy to read. It should be required reading for anyone wanting to work in diverse environments. It gives well researched information and clear guidelines as to how to use this information.

Too little for too much

I was shocked to see how tiny this book is, both in size and content, especially given the hefty price tag of $50! It is a bit outdated, as many of the studies are from the 90's. In this evolving field, more contemporary studies are important. And that price tag? Why so expensive? It was a terrific disappointment. Perhaps it would have been less so, were the price a more reasonable one. Save your money and find this information online.

Reknowned for his excellent skills in NLP and being a master in the practical application of NLP, Rintu is taking his view on job hunting.
In clear and concise words he writes about every step in the process for getting a new job. Rintu is a marvellous teacher.

But there's more to it. Job hunting is a sales process. After all you do sell yourself to a company.
When you apply creative thinking to these materials the techniques from this book can be applied to the "normal" sales-process as well (whatever you perceive as "normal").

I can highly recommend this book to anyone. All kudos to Rintu Basu for this easy read.

I read a lot of sales, persuasion, motivation based books for my career and Rintu consistently produces quality material. What's so great is the examples he gives and the digestive fashion in which the book is written making it easily replicable in real life situations. As an someone who has no vested interest, completely objective, and has never even met Rintu, I'd suggest that if you found value in this book, then read his first persuasion skills black book for a more deeper insight into the principles he teaches here...

Excellent book

This has to be one of the best books I have invested in. The techniques if used correctly do work. I had been working from home and really wanted this particular job in office. I went to three interviews and was offered the position. I cannot say what anyone else may experience, but it is worth giving it a try I think. I also believe these techniques will help in maintaining this position and other areas in my life that need a little work. If you are interested in being successful in your job interviewing and hunt, I highly recommend this book.
