About the Author
Janet Foy’s interest in dressage started when she lived in Oxford, England, and she passed several British Horse Society Instructor Exams. She is currently an FEI4* judge, USEF S Dressage Judge, and USEF Sporthorse R Breeding Judge. She has judged at all major shows in the United States, as well as national championships and CDI***/W in Guatemala, England, Colombia, Costa Rica, Barbados, Canada, Poland, Australia, and Mexico, and the FEI World Cup League Finals for the United States, Canada, and Australia. Janet is a former member of the USDF Executive Board and the USA Equestrian Board of Directors, and a current member of the Federation Dressage Committee and the International High Performance Dressage Committee. She is also on the USDF L Faculty and instructs federation judges training programs throughout the United States for dressage and sport horse breeding.

Not very useful

I was hoping for real life questions and there were a few, but not many. The questions that asked something specific- "how do I do 'this'?"- were not answered. Rather it seemed like the author wanted to answer another question and did so. This book is not as described on the web page at all. I returned it. If you want to really get answers, get Sylvia Loch's "The Balanced Horse". Now that is a great book.

I must confess that initially I tried to skim this book. But it was far too good, and I ended up spending hours totally engrossed in the lives, loves, and letters of the Lennox sisters--Caroline, Emily, Louisa, and Sarah. Author Stella Tillyard gives a second life to these 18th-century aristocrats, whose extended family included some of the most significant and colorful British political figures of the era. She mixes impeccable research, a sharp eye for detail, and a writing style that's both precise and lively to produce a biography of a clan that doubles as a panoramic history of the aristocracy in the 1700s.

Each sister's defining characteristics shine through her letters, portraits, and Tillyard's terrific storytelling. Caroline, the eldest, is deeply pessimistic, intelligent, and moral but fascinated by and attracted to "wickedness" (she eloped with the naughty-but-nice Henry Fox and lived happily ever after). Emily: beautiful, loving, dictatorial, and unbelievably fertile (22 children, 10 of whom survived into adulthood). Louisa was good, gentle, always unwilling to believe ill of anyone, and when she died, was mourned not only by family and friends, but also by the whole of the Irish town in which she lived. And Sarah--flighty, flirtatious Sarah, with whom the young King George III fell blushingly and tongue-tiedly in love. Who, after disgracing herself and her dull, uninterested husband with the moody younger brother of Lord Gordon (of Gordon riots fame), finally found happiness and respectability, in her late 30s, with an understanding soldier. The world of 18th-century, upper-class England is brought vividly to life in this biography of the Duke of Richmond's four daughters. Historian Tillyard (The Impact of Modernism) has crafted an engrossing narrative based on the voluminous correspondence of the Lennox sisters. Caroline, the eldest, who eloped at 19, wrote weekly to her younger sister Emily, who married for love at 16, settled in Ireland and bore 19 children. The two younger sisters, Louisa and Sarah, left home for arranged marriages and shared their experiences through letters. Sarah scandalized society when she abandoned her husband for a lover. But Tillyard does more here than merely document. She mostly forgoes scholarly apparatus and instead calls on fictional strategies to bridge the chronological distance between readers and the Lennoxes. And she succeeds brilliantly in this highly readable cultural history. Photos not seen by PW.

With an impressive amount of research, historian Tillyard brings alive in intimate detail the pampered elite in one period in English history. Her work tells the story of four sisters-Caroline, Emily, Louisa, and Sarah Lennox-noble-born members of a Georgian family. "After her month's confinement, Emily went through the sacramental ceremony of churching, when women were readmitted to the outside world after childbirth....[C]hurching brought women back into daily life. ...[A]fter churching came sex." Marriages, arranged and romantic, babies born and funerals endured-the full cycle of life is generously covered. For all the sisters' riches, there is an overtone of melancholy to much of their story, from the sad, orphan birth at the beginning to the last miserable, mindless end of Sarah Lennox. The author's understanding of the people and her care for scholarship make this a recommended purchase for larger public and academic libraries.

Competent work on an intriguing subject

This case study of a socially and politically prominent family of bluebloods throughout the Hanoverian and Regency periods actually begins with Charles Lennox (created 1st Duke of Richmond), who was the illegitimate offspring of Charles II and Louise de K�roualle (created Duchess of Portsmouth as a reward). The four ladies in question were daughters of the second duke and the great-granddaughters of the king. All of them married leading politicians and/or peers, all were both very private and very much in the public eye, and all were well educated, especially for women in that time. Because they were women, their influence was necessarily indirect, but they certainly were influential -- although, as Tillyard, an award-winning historian, shows, they were more concerned with family matters: childrearing, household finances, entertaining on behalf of their husbands, and trying to maintain a degree of personal freedom. But above all, they were always aware of their origins. Since this book was written for the popular market, there are no footnotes, but the author's use of public documents and private family journals and correspondence is extensive, and quotations are frequent.

brilliantly researched and unputdownable

I had already read 'Emily,Duchess of Leinster a few years before and visited Carton House for a private viewing so I was very pleased to read more about the lives of her sisters. I found this book very enjoyable and also read Lord Edward I am now looking forward to reading the book about Sarah's sons, the Napiers. I believe this is to be published soon . I also heard there was to be a series on the B.B.C of the Aristocrats. I really believe Sally Tillyard has a genuine feeling for the Lennox family and hope she writes more about this interesting family. I feel she made the historical facts interesting and easy to read for anyone not quite interested in such detail. There were parts of the biogaphy which I found a little hard to believe but perhaps I have a very innocent picture of Emily and could not have believed she would have an affair with Mr. Ogilvie. The book showed how families have not really changed through time. Sisters always stand by each other and Sally gave us an insight into how normal aristocrats really were. After reading this book it is easy to read Georgiana, Duchess of Devenshire as the Fox relatives of Emily feature there and it is interesting how Caroline Lennox's son rose in English history. I highly recommend this book and look forward to any book written by Stella Tillyard.

Little to meager info

While those book did introduce me to a new idea, the Fiverr affiliate program, the information provided is meager. Also, the typeface used is unusual. I would only recommend this ebook to a complete newbie.

Useless, free information for... Free? How about that!

Make money on fiverr by joining some affiliate program and then leaving the author a tip on his fiverr page (annoyingly plastered on EVERY footer) .... Nice. Useless, free, information and scamming, spammy self-promotion links throughout this entire "book". As a long time fiverr seller and buyer, this book was not worth downloading. It has nothing to do with making money on the site itself and everything to do with cross promoting via social media and affiliate links as well as loads of self promotion throughout each page.

This was an alright book about FIVERR. It gives tips and pointers on how to make money on FIVERR and gives ideas on what types of gigs to try out to learn how to make your own money on this website. It could have been a longer book, that was my only reasoning for the three star review.

He and his wife, Lynn, have three adult children and three grandchildren and live in San Carlos, California. His thriving ministry is an outgrowth of Ray Stedman’s groundbreaking Peninsula Bible Church in Palo Alto, California.

Powerful and refreshing; a must read for all!

Growing up I always thought of the Ten Commandments as a rule book of "no-no's"; instead, as Mitchell writes, they were given to us because He loves us, and wants us to know the freedom they offer. This book has challenged me to look at them from a different perspective; it will now remain on my nightstand to refer to often!

I toughly enjoyed reading Ten. Mark Mitchell writes in an engaging way about what happened that day when “the mountain blazed with fire to the very heavens… and the Lord spoke out of the fire… and declared his covenant, the Ten Commandments” (Dt 4:11-13). With thoughtful and skilled exegesis, Dr. Mitchell demonstrates how each commandment leads us along the path to freedom and authenticity. You can just snuggle into the book. I can’t think of a better book on the Ten Commandments for practical living—great for study groups, or small groups; or, just personal growth and understanding. It sets you free.

Mark Mitchell has written a brief commentary on the Ten Commandments that throws light on the commands in their ancient setting and shows the relevance of the ’Ten Words” for the Church today. He has written an extremely well balanced book, no mean feat in a field in which writers tend to make too much, or too little of Israel’s Law. Mark is an exceptional writer, a clear thinker, and an accomplished theologian who lays head and heart together. The book is filled with truth and grace. You will be instructed, but more importantly, you will be drawn toward righteousness as you read his book.

Gauguin may have been guilty of buying into the myth of the ``noble savage,'' but his Romantic quest seems almost contemporary today. In his own post-Rousseau, premulticultural time, however, his Tahitian escapade was viewed less sanguinely. On his return to France, unable to find a publisher, Gauguin himself published his diary, Noa Noa, minus the accompanying woodblock illustrations. Now the journal and art are reunited in this verbal and visual ode to Tahiti. The black-and-white woodblock prints present a spare contrast to the usual wash of colors in Gauguin's paintings, but they retain the pacific sensuality that permeates his work. The color here comes from the sketches Gauguin made in the margins of his diary, and from the writing itself: ``Silence? I am learning to know the silence of a Tahitian night.... The rays of the moon play through the bamboo reeds.... In 1894, Paul Gauguin came to the conclusion that European culture in general, and French culture in particular, was spiritually and morally bankrupt. So he left. On the eighth of June 1894 he arrived in Tahiti, an island of tropical warmth, impenetrable jungles, and--most importantly for Gauguin--unspoiled, undecadent, un-European, and extremely beautiful people.He luxuriated in this paradise for two years, producing some of this best and best-known paintings. But Gauguin left us another masterpiece that has languished in obscurity until now: his journal and the woodblocks he made to accompany it.

Gauguin's record of one of his stays in the South Sea Paradise.

This is a jewel of an art book by one of the greatest painters of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Originally considered too racy to publish in France, this 2005 English edition of the banned 1894 illustrated personal journal is probably how Paul Gauguin would have liked to have seen his text and art work combined for publication. The color and layout do justice to his artistic creations. The only change the artist might have still wished for was to have the book's format slightly larger since some of his woodcuts and the original journal itself are slightly larger than this reproduction of the work.
The book has a short 1962 introduction by W. Somerset Maugham that is somewhat amusing in that it tells how Maugham traveled to Tahiti to research Gauguin for a book he was considering writing about the island's most famous painter. He found one of the actual huts where Gauguin had lived and worked and purchased one of the glass panels that Gauguin had painted for one of the hut's three doors. The children living in the hut had passed the time scratching the windows clean and already destroyed the other two door paintings. Maugham bought the half door containing the one surviving glass panel with its painting of "Eve, nude, with the apple in her hand" still intact for four hundred francs and had it shipped back to his home in New York. It was in his writing room at the time he wrote the introduction for this volume.
Relating the antidote of Maugham's good luck and prowess at art collecting was the only subject covered in the introduction. But it did illustrate how little remained in Tahiti of Gauguin's stay in the Island Paradise. There was even less left there after the famous writer's research visit.
Gauguin's text is much more interesting. He tries to capture some of the purity of the native culture that was being quickly destroyed by the European invasion. I particularly liked the stories of one of his treks into the land of the Gods near the center of the island as well as his story of taking a local wife (concubine) from among the natives. After the deal was made with the 13-year-old girl's parents and stepparents, she accompanied her new mate home. After eight days the woman was required to return to her home and if she had decided she didn't like the match, she never returned to him. That's how divorce was handled in Gauguin's Paradise.
Gauguin attempted to explain the secret and mysterious history, legends and religious beliefs of the natives. His paintings and wood block prints helped him with this documentation. Why he suddenly left his idyllic life in paradise after only a two year stay to return to France in 1896 isn't explained in his journal. He only describes the pain it caused him and his beautiful native mate who he never saw again.
This is a must read for any fan of Paul Gauguin's artwork. Unfortunately, it only answers a few of the many unanswered questions about the great painter's life. And new questions are brought up and then abandoned. Personally, I would love to have read more about the former cannibals he met while living in his South Seas Paradise. Too often Gauguin only touched on some really fascinating fact and then left the reader dangling and desperate to know more. It's still a beautifully illustrated must read!

"Noa Noa" by Paul Gaugin

I stumbled upon a used copy of "Noa Noa" in 1985 as I passed by a street vendor selling books in New York City. I briefly glanced over his selection until the words "Noa Noa" jumped out at me. I couldn't believe I had found a copy of Paul Gaugin's book for sale on the streets of New York. I instantly bought it and have kept it with me ever since.

Paul Gaugin is one of the great post-impressionist painters whose art can be found in most museums around the world. Not only is he an accomplished painter, but a creative writer as well. His "journal of the south seas" is witty, humorous and is a poetically descriptive record of the artist's first trip to the island of Tahiti.

Paul Gaugin traveled to Tahiti because he wanted to free himself from the European struggles and live in a more natural and peaceful place. In "Noa Noa" he documents his travels to the island and shares his new experiences, which seem much freer than how we live today. It explains his fascination with the beautiful women of Tahiti, an attraction which led to some of the most famous paintings in art history. I very much enjoyed reading this journal and, as an artist myself, found it very inspiring.

About the Author
Suzanne Roy is a Professor of Biological Oceanography at the Institut des Sciences de la Mer of the Universit� du Qu�bec ... Rimouski (Canada) and a member of Qu�bec-Ocean. Over the last 20 years, Professor Roy has developed an expertise in the ecology and physiology of marine and estuarine phytoplankton, focusing on various aspects such as population dynamics of harmful algae, environmental impacts of aquaculture and ozone-related ultraviolet radiation effects. She also runs an analytical laboratory for the HPLC determination of algal pigments and UV-screening compounds. Her current research interests include the combined influence of climate warming and enhanced UV on phytoplankton communities, photoprotection and cell mortality in Arctic phytoplankton, and the transport of non-indigenous dinoflagellates in ships' ballast tanks. Several of these projects are part of Canada's major NSERC Research Networks such as CAISN and CFL. Professor Roy is a member of the Scientific Committee for the international Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (GEOHAB) programme.

Einar Skarstad Egeland is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture at Bod� University College, Norway. He has a broad experience in organic chemical analysis (chromatography and spectroscopy). He is an internationally recognised scientist on carotenoid analysis from natural sources (mostly prasinophyte algae, but also other algal classes). Currently, he is involved in several cross-disciplinary research projects related to marine ecology, aquaculture and seafood quality. He is an active member of the Marine Ecology Group at Bod� University College.

Carole Llewellyn is a microbial biogeochemist at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK. She has experience in phytoplankton pigments and UV absorbing compounds spanning over 20 years. Her research interests are focused on understanding the role of phytoplankton in the ocean and more specifically on microbial and food web dynamics, microbial biodiversity, community composition and photophysiology. At an applied level, her research contributes to eutrophication and pollution studies and links with satellite remote-sensing and bio-optics. More recently she has used her knowledge on algae and pigments to contribute to the rapidly growing area of algal biotechnology.

Geir Johnsen is a Professor of Marine Biology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and an Adjunct Professor in marine bio-optics at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). His major interests are the use of bio-optical methods in taxonomy, ecology and physiology of micro- and macroalgae. His main focus in the last 20 years has been on photosynthesis, light harvesting and utilization in algae and marine invertebrates with photosynthetic endosymbionts. Current interests include new approaches in in situ and remote sensing techniques for monitoring and mapping of planktonic and benthic organisms in the water surface, water column and sea floor.

My mid-life crisis came early; I was only 23 when I began pondering the purpose of my life. Desperately unhappy with where I was, and the future that I could see for myself, I made a crazy decision to sacrifice everything and follow my heart.

It took three years for my heart to speak, but when it did, the call was clear. I dropped out of university, said goodbye to friends and family, stuffed my life into a 25-litre backpack, and set off into the unknown.

What followed was a five year African adventure that carried me to places, and through experiences, that I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams.

About the Author
Philen Naidu is a spiritual adventure novelist, freelance reporter and humanitarian.
He has lived a life away from convention, exploring society andcultures around the world - from bustling 1st world cities tocomparatively dormant 3rd world villages - constantly asking thequestion:

'How do we live in harmony - within ourselves, with Nature andwith each other - in a rapidly developing world that is becoming oneglobal village without borders?'

The moving "My Life My Africa"

"My Life My Africa" is a touching book of a man's soul searching journey. Philen Naidu shares his story of how his disillusionment with life lead him to give up everything he knew in his fist world existence and follow an instinct to travel into rural Africa. He encounters his own conditioning when faced with a culture and way of life so different to the one he'd grown up in and become accustomed to.

By reading this gripping story of one man, I found myself asking questions of my own life experience, and the way of life we are led to believe is the ultimate way to live. I yearn even more now to travel into Africa and experience for myself another philosophy of living that is more communal and focused on what really matters in life, like relationships.

"My Life My Africa" reads like watching a movie with its informal style. I felt like I was having a coffee with Philen as he went into story telling mode, sharing his emotions and self questioning, and reading from his actual journal. The realness of Philen's expression keeps you turning the pages, and wishing you were having that actual coffee to ask about aspects he doesn't go into detail about in the book.

For a refreshing look at how life keeps us questioning our values, I recommend "My Life My Africa" as a fantastic read of a real life story that I am sure will move you in some way, as it has moved me.

Some Adventure, but little else....

I got a free copy from the author with a request to review this book. The synopsis kindled my interest because it is not often I , as an Indian myself, find books of this type from people of Indian origin.

I would summarize the book briefly as follows: Naidu, a South African of Indian descent, at age 23, feels alienated by the lack of direction in his comfortable life in Johannesburg and decides to go to Zambia to 'find himself'. He lives there among the rural poor, wild hippos, rhinos and elephants and eventually ends up in the business of 'smuggling' goods across the border between S.Africa and Zambia. During this period, he is involved in a serious road accident that leaves him unconscious and in a coma. Finally, he regains consciousness and recovers to health 'miraculously'. In the process, he 'discovers' himself.

As I reached two-thirds into the book, it felt no different from the experiences of many backpackers. Still, there is some real adventure in Naidu's travels as he encounters a wild elephant in the forests where he camps, sleeps near a waterhole and wakes up in the morning in the company of wild hippos and so on. Later, he comes to know that there was a pride of seven lions in the area and elephants with their young ones. This is fantastic and real adventure. Unfortunately, I must say that this was the only thing that really stirred me in the book and that I wasn't excited about much else concerning his 'search'.

A bit of reflection made me realize that people coming from different socio-economic backgrounds would view Naidu's 'existential crisis' in substantially different ways. This is probably at the root of my reaction. Having come up from the lower rungs of 1960s India, it looked to me that Naidu's alienation was primarily due to an affluent background where he is responsible only for himself and not for others around him. In such cases, I suppose one has to search harder to find meaning in life. A poor person in India would often be saddled even during his teens with responsibilities towards his own education, supporting his family and earning money to help educate his siblings and so on. Such responsibilities force a 'purpose' in life and leave little room for estrangement from real life or allow the luxury of 'finding oneself'.

One other reason that made me feel lukewarm towards the book was the narrative having an overtone of romanticizing poverty. Many people have random experiences of great kindness and generosity from the poor in the developing world. But kindness is not exclusive only to the poor. I have travelled extensively in the West and have experienced much kindness from the rich Western world as well. Still, having grown up in poorer backgrounds in India, I can say that poverty can also be cruel, unfeeling and terribly detrimental to one's mental and spiritual development. My experience is that poor people everywhere want to live a materially better life and not keep languishing in poverty.

The other point I have an issue with is the author's characterization of what is 'westernized'. It looks to me that he dubs something as 'western' if it is a feature of upper middle-class living. What he often calls 'westernized' with a negative connotation, turns out to be just a feature of upper middle-class life everywhere, both in the Western as well as the developing worlds.

Finally, there is much usage of expletives, which does not add anything of value to the book. On the contrary, it can alienate many readers.

Very highly recommended.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know the real Africa with its mix of personalities (the simple, the corrupt and the in-between). It was interesting to learn that some the words in the Zambian language were the same ones used in East Africa. The first part of the book took me back to the simpler times when I was surrounded by "Ubuntu" - before I became a "Muzungu" and got sidetracked. I love this book. I am glad that it was very realistic. I am glad the middle section of the African trading did not go on for a long time. The ending went back to the basics. Well done!!!
