An excellent ending to a very good series

An excellent ending to a very good series. Not Weis and Hickman's best necessarily(that will always be Death Gate for me) but it kept me reading until the end. It does feel a little rushed sometime, probably because this was supposed to be a 6 book series, but it all does seem to fit into place by the end. The main character's story arc comes full circle as he learns what it takes to be a good man, and leader of people. I loved the series mythology feel, and it's gods knowledge that they haven't done a great job, after introducing them as strong, and very capable to the world's inhabitants, seems to really make the story more than just a fate will figure it out plot that it seemed to be going to earlier in the series. I also loved that it turns out the gods the book introduces as the repulsive ogre's gods, turn out to be the more capable. It can be argued that the different races, long enemies, came together a little too easy in the end, but makes sense with the gods direct involvement with the people of the world. Another very good series by the veteran duo!

Compared to the other books, I think this final book stumbles. Overall, I enjoyed the book- It kept in lien with the other books, and it was a pretty good ending to the series. It keep me reading until the end, but I was somewhat disillusioned by the ending. I can't explain why, but I felt this book kind of dragged on and was just unsettling. It seemed like the book was written just to close out the story. Along the lines of 'I'll try my best, but I want this to end..'

Diet to complicated

I think this doctor is right in most of his advices in the book. The problem is that most of the advices are very hard to be tackle. I also thik the book is too long, what he in reality says can be done in half of the book, maybe with ilustratrios, images, or verification lists as well.

About the Author
David E. Presti teaches neurobiology, psychology, and cognitive science at the University of California in Berkeley; worked for more than a decade in the clinical treatment of addiction at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Francisco; and teaches neuroscience to Tibetan monastics in India. He has doctorates in molecular biology and biophysics from Caltech, and in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon.

For an Excellent Understanding of How the Nervous System Relates to the Mind

I knew I had selected the right book when I dipped in, at random, and found the author’s explanation of the classic elementary school question, “If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one around to hear it, is there a sound?” If you thought your teacher’s answer unsatisfying, as I did back in school, you’ll love Presti’s lucid explanation. I felt an immediate connection with his style of writing.

As a layman in search of a better understanding of the challenging, technical subject of neuroscience, I found half of the battle to be locating a book that didn’t talk up or talk down to me.

This is it. Diagrams, photos, and art work illustrate every concept. When the author uses a term, diffusion of particles in a liquid, for example, he follows it with an illustration easily envisioned: “putting a spoonful of milk in a cup of tea.”

In more complex concepts, such as the energy requirements of an ion-transporter protein, Presti helps the reader visualize that an ion needs to be “pushed” up its concentration gradient: “It’s like carrying water up hill,” he explains. “The water tends to flow down, and energy is required to carry it up.”

In a chapter on the nose and smell, Presti describes olfactory sensory perception. I was fascinated to learn a mouse has four times the number of olfactory receptor proteins as a human. Our distant ancestors, he discloses, possessed much better smell, but as we became upright creatures, vision became more important and our olfactory receptors were lost through mutation.

The author walks the reader through the process of how an aroma, like cinnamon, made up of many different molecules, activates various receptor proteins when we inhale them. From there, he explains how our system constructs the mental experience we know as the aroma we love in our coffee cake.

In the chapter, “Mind, Consciousness, and Reality,” Presti speculates about the future:
• The question of whether mathematics is solely a product of human cognition or points to truth about the foundations of reality.
• The question of the relationship between reality and our perception.
• The possibility of building integrated circuits which will duplicate the neural connectivity of the brain.
• The suggestion that the next truly big scientific revolution may involve a connection between physics and consciousness.
• Projects which investigate near-death experiences and reincarnation.
His vision made me yearn for more.

In summary, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of how the human nervous system relates to the mind.

It reads like a yarn well-told around a campfire

This book is sneaky. It reads like a yarn well-told around a campfire. The bits of scientific history, anthropology, research data and philosophical pondering serve as a kind of entertaining carrier signal, and all of a sudden, you realize you’ve learned a lot of neuroscience! The best teachers teach without students realizing they're learning, and Dr. Presti is clearly one of the best. This book gives any interested reader a good foundation in contemporary neuroscience. One need not have special preparation to enjoy and understand it, yet as a physician I found that it provided a meaningful update to my understanding. Its gift is not so much in providing a plethora of data as in providing a way of thinking about brain, mind and body that is grounded in current scientific understanding yet remains open to the wondrous mysteries yet to be explained.

Perfect book for my old, nerdy husband!

Bought this book for my husband based on Michael Pollan's recommendation. My husband LOVES this book! I don't know that much about it but I do know it's his "go to" book. He enjoys the ease of which it reads and it brings up subjects he learned long ago but has forgotten the fundamentals behind. Really nice to finally give him a gift he didn't want to return!

Wish I had this book a long, long time ago!

Do you want to be a good wife to your husband? Do you want to learn how to prioritize and maximize your life? How about as a mother and wife? Well this is the book that will help you get there! You can get that "butterflies in your stomach, mushy" feeling again with your husband...get this book and learn a little from this author...someone who has "been there and done that"! She gives great insight into being a woman, wife, and mother successfully. Just read a little and apply what you've learned...and then do it again definitely life changing!

A LOTTA GOOD STUFF HERE, BUT...

Forty-years ago, I was given this book by my fianc�. He was using Marabel Morgan as a spokesperson for him and for what he expected in a wife. Since I had a Cinderella Complex already--waiting to be rescued by Prince Charming--I didn't object to the basic theme of her book: submit, serve, obey, and lots of sex...at first. But as time went on, he became his own spokesperson. We weren't even married yet, and I was not even coming close to meeting his expectations. I tried but I failed and the engagement ended.

I just reread The Total Woman. I wasn't that far along into the book before I wanted to throw it out the window, take it out back and burn it, stomp on it...anything to vent my anger. But, instead I kept reading, and then I realized something. The inspiration, motivation, and passion behind this book was for a good reason: helping couples save their marriages. With biblical direction and Christian values, Ms. Morgan wrote a comprehensive how-to book, which, over the years, has saved and enriched many marriages--marriages that were headed to divorce court.

I'm only going to comment on the parts of her book that I agree with--things in any relationship that are important for it to be healthy, rewarding, long-lasting, and of course, happy. I'm not going to comment on the parts that advocate serving his every whim, turning all control over to him, submitting to every desire, and being an obedient servant...I mean wife.

Page 38: "Do you know that your personal happiness depends on the attitude you decide you will have?"

Page 50: "A man needs to be accepted as he is..." and "I need to feel accepted, too."

Page 58: "...respect, honor, esteem, adore, praise, enjoy, and admire."

Skipping over the sex part. Not going to comment on "sexual intercourse every night of the week," or "spray your sheets with sweet cologne," or the part about greeting him at the door naked and wrapped in Saran wrap or pink baby-doll outfits and fuzzy boots or the part about having sex pretending to be "a pixie or a pirate, a cowgirl or a show girl." Nope! Not going there. Everyone knows that sex in important in a marriage.

Page 133: "A woman expresses her love by words and expects words in return. A man expresses his love by actions... ." And "Understanding the one you live with and love with gives such freedom." And "A husband and wife must communicate if they hope to understand each other. There is no greater feeling than knowing you are understood."

Page 134: "Be a good listener."

Page 136: "Don't criticize or put him down." Of course, that's a two-way street.

Page 138: "Be sensitive to his moods." Ditto on what I said above.

Page 139: "Be interested in his interests." This is good as long as it's not disingenuous and short-lived.

Page 142: "Before you speak, think the problem through and put it into its proper perspective. An angry outburst can scar your husband's emotions and create barriers between you."

It's important to note that Marabel Morgan is writing this book for women. It's instructions on how to keep your man happy so he won't stray and do the nasty-nasty with the bimbo at the office. She also has a chapter or two on how to raise well-adjusted and happy children.

A note here: Mrs. Morgan wrote this book from the perspective of an upper-middle-class housewife with a responsible and hard-working and caring husband. She lived in a world that was disconnected from so many other American households. She talks about "the office" as if every husband goes off to the office in a suit and tie and is tempted by pretty, seductive secretaries. What about the men who are slackers, men who don't hold up their end of the responsibility? What then...Marble...I mean Marabel?

My fianc�, who was a Christian man with high morals and "good intentions" wanted to provide me with a manual on how to be his perfect little sweet princess wife.

I can only thank Ms. Morgan, because if it had not been for The Total Woman (I could never, ever be that woman, by the way) I would have married the wrong man. It took several attempts at love--I had to realize that I didn't need rescuing; I am a smart, independent, capable woman. I eventually got it right. I have won the "Best Mate Lotto." Life is wonderful and, thank goodness, I don't have to wear that pirate outfit any more.

Scientists' viewpoint of the "Scole Hole" experiments

This is a recap of the experiments that took place in the “Scole Hole” as detailed in the book Witnessing the Impossible. The book was written from the viewpoint of the scientists who were invited to attend many of the psychic phenomena.

Reading Witnessing the Impossible was a long hard slog at almost 600 pages of great detail, whereas The Scole Experiment is easier reading at around 300 pages. Both books are very informative, though, and each fills gaps that the other is missing.

this book is about a ground breaking experiment comprehensive in scope. it gives the perspective of those who set up and participated in the experiment and the scientists who came to observe it details how the experiments were designed, and exactly what the results were. the experimenters were aided by the scientists themselves in making these experiments as scientific as possible. The spirit team also wanted no stone left unturned in terms of scientific rigor. as a result I think it can safely be said that the existence of the afterlife and its awareness of us was moved forward a step or 2in terms of credibility.

The resulting phenomena included moving lights with no apparent source, "apports" (materializations) of odd items, the touches of unseen hands, disembodied voices, and eventually images recorded on photographic film and videotape. It's hard not to be skeptical when reading the early stages of this book - the claims sound wild, some of the "spirit communications" are rather puerile, and the experimental controls were, at first, minimal. Later, however, seasoned investigators of the paranormal were invited to observe the seances and take precautions against fraud. The phenomena persisted. The group even met in other locations, sometimes in other countries, and continued to produce results. While critics will go on crying fraud, it is hard to believe that such remarkably varied and carefully documented effects could have been fraudulently produced for so many years, in so many different venues, under the watchful eyes of so many different observers, without detection. On the other hand, it's also hard to believe that such fantastic claims could be true, especially since the phenomena abruptly ceased for reasons that remain cryptic. The Solomons do a careful and serious job of presenting the facts and the arguments, both pro and con, and their book includes numerous photos, many in color. THE SCOLE EXPERIMENT caused a sensation in England and is finally available in the US. It should be read by anyone with a serious interest in the paranormal.
