About the Author
Dr. Michael K. Ong is an Executive Vice President and Chief Risk Officer for the Americas for Credit Agricole Indosuez in New York. He has enterprise-wide responsibility for all risk management functions for the Carr Futures Group globally and CAI's North American entities. He is a member of the Executive Committee and additionally, he is a member of the board for Carr Global Advisors. Before joining Credit Agricole Indosuez Michael was the senior vice president and head of enterprise risk for ABN Amro Bank. There he was responsible for the management of information and decision support function for the executive committee on enterprise-wide market, operational, credit and liquidity risk, as well as RAROC and ROE models. Prior to this Michael headed the corporate research unit at First Chicago NBD Corporation, where he was chair of the global risk management research council and head of the market risk analysis unit. He was previously also responsible for quantitative research at Chicago Research and Trading Group (now Nations Banc-CRT) and has served as an assistant professor of mathematics at Bowdoin College. Michael is also an adjunct professor at the Stuart School of Business of the Illinois Institute of Technology. He received a BS degree in physics, cum laude, from the University of the Philippines and degrees of MA in physics and MS and PhD in applied mathematics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Michael is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Financial Regulation and Compliance and the Journal of Risk.

About the Author

Bart K. Holland is a consultant in probability and statistics for medical applications and has been involved with the design and analysis of many clinical trials. He has also taught probability, biostatistics, and epidemiology for more than ten years at the New Jersey Medical School, where he is an associate professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health. His lectures have won him the medical school's award for outstanding teaching.

A GREAT BOOK TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF "ALPHA LEVELS"

I think this is the only book I have come across which explains the meaning of "alpha levels" so clearly. The author's example of flipping a two-headed coin (without revealing to his students that it is two-headed), observing their reactions as "the number of heads keep going up" and finally explaining that "different students had different alpha levels" could'nt have brought out the meaning of this term in a more better way !

The Key to the Ancient Prophecies of Daniel

This book an attempt to unlock that ancient prophecy which is itself a key to the rest of Scripture. Daniel is the only book of the Bible on which Christ put His finger and said, "Understand it" (Matthew 24:15).

All the chief themes of the New Testament are implicit in the book of Daniel, particularly those of the kingdom of God (inaugurated and consummated), Christ and Antichrist, the cross, the resurrection of the dead, the judgment, the time of the end, and the last great tribulation. Even justification by faith and the Pentecostal outpouring are present here as elements of the eschatological reality—the cross ushered in.
Daniel was written for people living in a time of apostasy and persecution. While at first sight the eras brought to view are those of the Babylonian captivity and the crisis under Antiochus Epiphanes, all subsequent times of similar persecutions are mirrored here.

It is amazing how many tiny details of this prophecy become the seed of elaborations in the New Testament. For example, Daniel 9:24-27 is the source of all the elements of Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, 2 Thessalonians 2, and Revelation 13. With Daniel as the seed, and the Gospels the blade, 2 Thessalonians and Revelation are "the full corn in the ear."
For an example of the myriad ways in which tiny allusions in Daniel are elaborated in the New Testament, consider the expression "to destroy and annihilate many" (Daniel 11:44). The Hebrew clause means "to anathematize." In Revelation 13:11-18 that prediction is expanded. Another example is the way Christ took the stone of Daniel 2 and applied it to the impact of His kingdom, both in its present reality and its final consummation. (See Luke 20:17,18.) And the elevation of the Son of man, to whom all power is given in Daniel 7, becomes a part of the great commission when Christ declared that all authority in heaven and on earth had been committed to Him. (See Matthew 28:18.)

A Word From the Author

This book is a revision and update of my commentary on Daniel published by the Southern Publishing Association in 1978. Much of the former volume is here, plus a considerable amount of new material particularly in the Appendices. The present work is divided into two main sections: the first is a straightforward interpretation and application of the chapters of Daniel, but the second is for "giraffes" who wish to reach higher. For them the second section of the book the appendices on technical issues—has been prepared.

About the Author

Born in Berlin in 1936, Harald Mante studied graphic design and painting at Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden. He taught Photographic Design at Dortmund Polytechnic and at the European Art Academy in Trier, as well as many seminars and workshops. Professor Mante has authored numerous art books and textbooks. His photographic work has been exhibited in museums and private collections world-wide, and his books and calendars have become collector's items.

Excellent, but...

Everything said in the other reviews is spot on. Though "Photograph" is the largest word on the cover, this book is about design. I'm very glad that I purchased it. To me, the "basics" (exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field, etc.) that so many books focus on can be quickly figured out by spending a few minutes with google and shooting a couple rolls of film. If you're going to spend money on a book about photography, it makes sense to get a book that's filled with not-as-easily-found information. Especially when it presents it really well.

It contains tons of pictures and diagrams, and the text uses to them to explicate concepts of design. However, the editor failed to ensure that the diagram references in the text always match up with the correct diagram. For example, on page 18 the three diagrams are labelled G, H, and J. Then, on page 21, the author refers to diagram I (which doesn't exist), and clearly means to reference diagram J. This isn't all that big of a deal, but when you couple it with the fact that you're already having to often flip between pages to find which diagram is being referenced, it's pretty annoying whenever it happens.

I'd still recommend this book whole-heartedly, but I'd also recommend having a pen nearby to make the occasional correction. And while I'm recommending things, I'd also recommend the new Vampire Weekend album and Left Hand's Polestar Pilsner as being the perfect summer combination.

Harald Mante's Classic Book in a New Edition

Update for the second edition: 17 November 2012

This review covers just the new material in this second edition, which is the English translation of the German third edition. I commend the reader of this review to my detailed review of the first English edition (2007), elsewhere on amazon.com. The content of this new edition is identical to that of the first except for some new topics, some reorganization of the sixth section, and the addition of two new sections. I did not do the translation of the new material. "Identical" is not quite correct. From his first German edition to this one, the photos he uses to introduce each section change and are almost reason enough to own each edition. They are excellent and beautiful.

In the sixth section, "Using the Tools," Mante has inserted a chapter on visual aspects of the square format. From this same section, he has broken out the chapters on photographing sequences and series into their own two chapter section. Lastly he has added a new, eighth section on analyzing images to discern their elements, universal contrasts, and color contrasts.

This last section reminds me of the presentation in his Van Nostrand Reinhold books in English from the 1970s and is an important addition to the content of the 2007 edition. This new section should be several times longer, or given more chapters. It shows in schematic manner, using both a color and B&W rendering of each image along with small thumbnails, how a shooter or viewer can start training oneself to see the components of an image's, or potential image's visual structure. The thumbnails identifying the main color contrasts do not indicate where in the image such contrasts are, but they do encourage the viewer to search for them in the main image. The text for each image is in the manner of "formal criticism." This new section makes this book unique among all "composition" books currently or recently in print, and is a near culmination of why Mante's approach is so important, useful, and lacking in availability in the market. It gives the reader a model of how to begin to visualize images' architectures. The closest other such book is long out of print and deals with paintings and drawings.

This revision leaves a reader to surmise that somehow an image's success rests on the presence of several elements and contrasts spread throughout the frame, but the parameters of using those tools are not thoroughly spelled out. He doesn't go to the next logical place, and that is to take his approach to the elements, contrasts, and formal analysis to show the reader how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in an image's visual structure. The next edition needs to venture into this territory to be fully satisfying. The new last section on image analysis is the logical place for a new chapter on evaluating the strengths and weaknesses in an image's architecture: how well used and placed are the elements and contrasts for an image to be architecturally successful or need something in or out. There are hints at points throughout his text, but no unified, coherent argument in one place. That is the last step, missing from all current literature.

In terms of teaching design, what is missing in all extant literature on composition in photography comes under what used to be called "principles of design." Depending on the teacher the principles might be (Maitland Graves) harmony, gradation, contrast, unity, dominance, balance, repetition, and alternation, or in the case of the Davis/Sterling series, emphasis, contrast, pattern, balance and unity, movement and rhythm. There are other categorizations for the principles.

Too, I would recommend an expanded analysis chapter incorporating several more images; the ones in the chapter, while sophisticated enough in content and structure, leave one wishing for analyses of, say, the images he uses to introduce the sections, which are really good.

He can do this. It is a logical arena for the next edition. There is no other book that does the job of this book, and it remains one of the very few indispensable volumes in the library of any photographer who wishes to understand images beyond the intuitive, elementary level: that is, to learn to incorporate what is objective about images into one's way of seeing and creating them. Get this book, even if you have the earlier edition.

Great content, bad vessel

This book is great! SO many Nick Cave songs I have wanted to play on guitar/piano but either I can't figure them out or the online chords are wrong. The only reason I give it 5 stars is because it's awful to play with. It's just a hardback book, which would be fine, except holding it open is impossible. With normal songbooks you can break the back and they'll lay pretty open, but this one feels like it has a spring that wants to snap it shut every time you open it. I'm tempted to take it to kinkos and have them cut off the binding and spiral bind it. That would make all the difference in the world!

Liked the 14th edition far more

The 15th edition is not as friendly, easy to read, or informative as the 14th edition. The previous edition had more complete information, friendlier and more "comfort food recipes, and the print did not fade into the photo backgrounds as this edition does. Some of the basics (Macaroni Salad, German Potato Salad, Lollipops,Divinity, etc.) were replaced by more global concoctions (Ginger-spiced Cucumbers, Beet and Apple Salad, Curried Wild Rice Salad, etc.). I will miss the 14th edition and am sad to have lost the small tidbits of information provided throughout each section.

Recently I upgraded from the 1950's copy to this--I was a little worried that it would be a "book of Cilantro" so to speak, with everything new and nothing that I've come to know as B&H Cookbook style. Not the case! The book contains a mix of my old standby recipes, along with a ton of new ones. I really like the side-by-side recipe suggestions--one recipe that uses the leftovers from a different recipe.

For those who cook often, there's a hearty smattering of scratch recipes. For those who cook rarely (or those who have a cupboard full of random things), there are also a lot of recipes that use pre-made or canned ingredients.

Overall, very happy with this book.

It would be fantastic, if...

It would be fantastic, if they would have left IN the good stuff and left OUT the over-processed ingredients. I have an early 90's version of this book my mother gave me, and it has lots of great recipes, PRESSURE canning instructions in detail, and very few "packaged" mentions aside from some noodles and canned goods like beans. Since these are modern times and home cooking is on the rise, I thought this version would be more updated, less condensed-soup casseroles and more back-to-basics cooking. Boy was I wrong! Every recipe I have tried so far, while good, had to be converted from "packaged this", "canned this", and "purchased that". Why do they have to tell you to used packaged, purchased stuff? Is "packaged spinach" necessary? It is far cheaper if you buy it in a bunch without the plastic wrapper! It seemed to be PUSHING processed plastic wrapped stuff on the reader, instead of encouraging wholesome natural food. I had hoped to find updated rules on pressure canning, as my old edition had charts and details that were current on the topic 20 years ago, but no... they barely even mention pressure canning is possible! It skims over canning fruits, and mostly focuses on canning pectin jellies. I like the recipe ideas, and the converted Falafel recipe was heavenly, but the emphasis on processed food has turned me off from buying an update when this wears out. BH&G, I am VERY disappointed. I wasn't expecting a "whole food" cookbook, but I was at least expecting much less processed stuff. After all, I bought a Cookbook, a book on how to cook, not a Throw-a-bunch-of-bags-and-cans-together-and-heat-it-up book!

Before you think this reviewer is an old fashioned cranky grandma, let me tell you about me. I am a 26 year old wife and mother of 1, who lives in a city, grows herbs and salad on her patio, and had a mother who taught me how to cook at a young age. She didn't believe in processed junk either. I never ate hamburger helper until I tried it as an adult. We are on a budget, but we eat organic whole foods all the time thanks to my savvy shopping habits. I buy lots of produce when it's in season and super cheap, then freeze and can it to eat later in the year. It tastes way better and fresher than those BPA lined tin-can veggies. I am not opposed to things like storebought whole grain noodles, but I just like homemade better so I make my own. I had hoped this cookbook would reflect the growing trend for healthsome food and wholesome cooking. I didn't expect to get whole grain whole food recipes, but this was sadly disappointing. For the budding cook, this is a bad book to learn from. It sets a poor example as is. If you are experienced, you can convert these recipes to something healthy and get some use of it.

WILLIAM L. LUYBEN, PhD, is a professor at Lehigh University, and the author/co-author of thirteen textbooks.
