Introduction To The Hermetcia

I found this book interesting for getting the basic idea of what the Hermetica is.

I guess some reviewers think it's too watered down and doesn't match the voluminous original texts. However I read one such book years ago which was overloaded with footnotes and sections written in the original language which unfortunately for me I am not fluent in. There's something to be said for creating an approachable introduction to such a metaphysical subject.

The statements attributed to Thoth / Hermes in this book are very eloquent and poetic at times. He describes the universe as a goddess named Destiny who governs the stars and the constellations of the Zodiac. The Zodiac in turn governs the affairs of us mortals. On the day we are born the position of the constellations will foretell our destiny during this incarnation.

I would like to find a good book about astrology that shows the connections between the Zodiac and Egyptian mysticism if anyone can think of one. I'm interested in what the 12 signs mean in relation to the effects of the constellations on the affairs of mortals.

Some people see a connection between the Egyptian god Thoth and Christ like Thoth was Christ in another incarnation. Edgar Cayce stated that Thoth was the living embodiment of 'The Word' or something to that effect. The Gospel Of John describes Christ in that same way.

Another possible connection with Christ is the way Thoth explained what the term 'born again' means. Christians use that term often but do they know what it really means ? Perhaps they do know but they usually won't explain it in terms of Egyptian mysticism.

I believe Christ traveled to Egypt and studied with the Egyptian priests during the so called missing years that weren't captured in the bible. Christ experienced the Egyptian initiation rites I believe. If what some people believe is true it was Christ Himself who created the Egyptian priesthood and the initiation rites during his life experience as Melchizedek. Although who knows if Melchizedek and Thoth were even normal human beings. Perhaps they were something more.

That's why Saint Augustine said that Christianity has always existed and is the one true religion. The authors show that quote in the introduction.

It's an interesting theory that ancient and secret knowledge is passed along to a chosen few in every generation. Some people think that Pythagoras and Plato may have been two of those people.

The search for the origins of philosophy will I believe lead us back to ancient Egypt and ultimately to Atlantis. Mythology is the common thread between all of the world's religions, even the evil ones like Satanism. Although I'm not sure that saying Satan is 'evil' is totally accurate either.

Zeus, Osiris, Isis and those others are very real. Have no doubt about that.

Inspiring synopsis, a classic to keep

Hermes was clearly a great genius, but it's hard to know the precise meaning of the ancient writings, so scholars are prone to argue about translations. In my view, the arguments miss the point. Great truths resist translation to words, so we must use our intuition to ride along with the prose so we can receive enlightenment. Then our understanding can be filled in directly from source, within. In this version, I found the streaming lyrical script this author uses to be very inspiring and illuminating. I just like to keep this book around, pick it up now and then, and read. Hermes was what in India would have been called a guru, a sage, a mahatma, and he is talking about the living cosmos, the embodiment of awareness from top to bottom in this universe. He says the universe is breathing and singing, and in that divine vibration everything is happening. We are an intimate part of it, and knowing that is incredibly exciting. As above, so below. As without, so within. We are an atom in a galaxy, but within us are billions of tiny worlds as well. There is no end to the glory of Atum ( the one god and infinite spirit ). Every time I read this book I get a little more understanding. compare to Upanishads, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and tibetan teachings about the nature of the cosmos. Wonderful book. If you also want a more scholarly approach to the complete teachings of Hermes, there are many other great titles.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was one of the great artists and environmentalists of the twentieth century. In a remarkable career spanning more than sixty years, he made over 40,000 photographs. The bible of photography

The trilogy of Ansel Adams (The Camera, The Negative and The Print) are simply the bible of photographic technique. Although it was written in a time where digital wasn't even dreamed about, all the concepts that really matters to produce high quality photographies are there, independently of the employed technology.

This is the second book purchased having recently lost the first. This book thoroughly explains the zone metering system, a system that is the foundation of understanding light and exposure. Mr. Adams goes through step by step the process of how film records light but never surrendering the final image and vision to the meter. A must read for all aspiring photographers.

Not as good as you'd think

I am a geologist with 8 years in the geothermal industry who bought this book in the hopes that it would help "round out the corners" in my understanding of all aspects of geothermal development.

It didn't.

Do you know how there can be manuals that don't really explain how to operate the product you bought, that you already have to have the knowledge you want to know in order to understand the manual? This book is like that. I really couldn't get it to explain to me those aspects of the geothermal industry that I don't already understand. It didn't seem to do a good job explaining even those concepts I am familiar with.

Like some electronic gadget manuals that were written by Japanese/Chinese/Koreans that were later translated into English, this text is not clear or lucid. Understanding always seemed just out of reach.

Of course, you'll have to evaluate my possible idiocy or incompetence in understanding concepts, but I would NOT recommend this text to any audience.

The Crow Killer Myth

The author has put together an interesting fictional account
of the life of "Liver Eating Johnson." While the attempt is made
to portray Johnson as a mammoth trapper with uncanny fighting
prowress, the varied accounts of Johnson's trials and tribulationslack any credible evidence to back up the stories.
As another reviewer put it--nearly all of the feats attributable to Johnson are taken from 2nd or 3rd and even fourth-hand accounts. The Crow Killer saga is simply a myth.
When the dialect approach is taken by the author to convey
the backwoods talk of the mountain men it becomes almost laughable.
But all in all the story has the redeeming quality of at least entertaining the reader with the superman-comic-book
antics of a trapper with Karate skills. Even the sole purported
photo of the liver eater (notwithstanding his age at the time
it was taken) does not show the body frame of a giant of a man
who could knock off two indians simply by banging their heads
together.
The Liver Eater gets a One (1) for entertainment.

I was incredibly gripped by the story of this extraordinary man that was so well respected throughout the west. I instantly felt compelled to visit the places described in the book including the final resting place of John Johnson/Johnston... I am also curious to know what became of his signature possesions the "matching rosewood handled Colt and Bowie". I have read the reviews on this book, some disputing the claims made by Raymond W. Thorp. I would like to know "the real story" if there is such and determine for myself from the sources whether I believe it to be true or not. Until such information is published I will believe Raymond W. Thorp's version to be true. Either way, this man is sure to have been quite a figure in the great American frontier of which I so painfully wish to have seen! Happy Reading!

About the Author
Jim Kartalamakis was born in Salonica, Greece. He went to Toronto, Canada, to study electrical engineering, and at 23 bought his first Alfa, which was where it all started. Thirty years later, Jim still fondly remembers the life and times of the ARCC (Alfa Romeo Club of Canada). He returned to Greece in 1979, and ever since has had only one make of car, albeit different models – from a 1750 GT through to an Alfetta GTV, a 75 3.0 to, currently, another 75 3.0 and a 1.8 Turbo. For many years Jim was a technical writer for several car magazines, and the official Alfa Romeo technical manual translator in Greece.

Great Book, Wish it had some company.

I eagerly awaited this book for a few years before it was finished and released. The author has done a lot of well detailed research and development on this engine. He also is a regular on some of the Bulletin boards relating to Alfa Romeo's, as such he is an active resource for any Alfisti who desire to learn more about the Alfa V6 engines. There is scant availability of any proven, documented facts on V6 development so this book really fills a need for anyone desiring help with improving the power output of the V6 Alfa motor.

While I really like this book I would say that in order to fully versed in everything you need to know about these engines you will need the official workshop manual as well, and to do some additional research.

But if you want to increase the output of your Alfa V6 or learn more about it then this book belongs on your shelf. Or better yet your workshop bench.

But as Los Angeles Times reporter Miles Corwin chronicles in this troubling yet uplifting book, the ills of the inner city have not completely defeated Toni Little's advanced-placement students at Crenshaw High School, with whom Corwin spent the 1996-1997 academic year as a silent observer. Having grown weary of writing about gang violence, drive-by shootings, and drug arrests, Corwin wanted "to find a way to write about the other children of South-Central, the students who avoid the temptations of the street, who strive for success, who, against all odds, in one of America's most impoverished, crime-ridden neighborhoods, manage to endure, to prevail, to succeed." He also wanted to show "how truly slanted the playing field remains, how inequality is built into a system touted as a meritocracy." Los Angeles Times reporter Corwin offers a viscerally affecting glimpse inside the world of an inner-city high school. Hewing to the approach of his first book, The Killing Season: A Summer Inside an LAPD Homicide Division, he followed the seniors in an Advanced Placement (AP) English class from their first day of school in 1997 to graduation. Overcrowded, underfunded Crenshaw High School has a dropout rate of almost 50%. Notorious as the setting for the movie Boyz 'n the Hood and as home base for one of L.A.'s worst gangs, Crenshaw is located in the impoverished and crime-ridden South-Central district. The struggling students whose stories Corwin adroitly interweaves face trying circumstances: some have parents on welfare, in prison or addicted to crack; many work at part- or full-time jobs; several cope with the scarring effects of physical or sexual abuse. Yet most minority students in Crenshaw's "gifted magnet program" manage to get As and go on to college. Corwin succeeds admirably in avoiding the cliched image of inner-city schools, with wide-eyed, altruistic teachers and menacing students. For example, he describes Toni Little, the white AP English teacher (nearly all of whose students are black), as a volatile, histrionic personality who frequently involves students in her bitter ongoing battle with administrators. California voted to end affirmative action in 1997, and Corwin passionately argues that affirmative action programs are an imperfect but necessary measure to level a grossly uneven playing field. Will inspire you to understand all struggles and cry

I just about almost cried towards the end of the last chapter. I am sure if this was a movie I would cry watching it. The struggles these teenagers go through are what makes them want to strive in school. Some are in foster home to foster home and others were abused or in a deadly gang and changed to be a better person for his own life. I liked the character of Ms. Little as I read the second half of the book. She is a teacher who does care about her students being successful and preparing them to pass the Advanced Placement Exam at the end of the year. All-in-all, this book was a great read and I'm glad my teacher assigned it to me! Read it in 5 days with pauses in between to eat and shower and eat of course and going to my religious service.

Not just for those with children.

This gripping immersion into inner city school life makes the perfect companion read to Tracy Kidder's "Among Schoolchildren". From a nice, safe, concerned, caring enviornment, where the problems are understandable and manageable in "Among Schoolchildren"; to a place where success is measured not merely by acheivement but by the tremendous obstacles students must overcome merely to be in school, in this gripping, similarly styled work. The two books are a startling picture of the tremendous gulf of opportunity and enviornment at the spectrum ends of our society.
I strongly recommend both books, to everyone; not just parents, teachers or those who are usually associated with "education" interests. "And Still We Rise.." is not merely a vision of a brutal social/educational reality that must be addressed, but a poignant drama, as well. The young people whose stories are followed are the heroes of the most brutal battles raging today; crime, drugs, racism, and a culture of despair and degradation. These are the best and the brightest ... they are forced to face obstacles that should be reserved only for those who have transgressed horribly against society.
The incidental intrusion of the writer into this jouranlistic narrative is the only jarring note to be found in an otherwise seamless view. The unfortunate, even tragic circumstances that cause that intrusion, however, are understandable, from a human standpoint, even if they are inexcusable as viewed through the prism of journalistic purity.
An emmimently readable, engaging work. Recommended.

to have more than just glimpse into the hearts, souls and spirits of these hard-working,driven,focused and gifted inner-city children. When we think our struggles are exhausting, theirs were 10X as great. I've read a number of books, all well-written on similiar subjects "A Hope in The Unseen by Ron Suskind" is another excellent read), but in this book I found Miles Corwin wrote in such a way that I was so moved by his character development of each and every one of the twelve students and even his own involvments and deep feelings. Their circumstances,each unique in their own right, were written in such a way that I could FEEL what they were experiencing. I empathized with their struggles and pain,limited resources of their school system (i.e lack of books and computers), their dissapointments,disquiet,anger,anxiety,fears,loneliness, abandonment,allienation from their own peers, community and sometimes family,and ultimately...the joys of their triumph.
I was spellbound and deeply moved.
