Eloquent, Timely!

This is a fascinating, accessible book for the general reader who wants to know the importance of the Islamic past for contemporary Muslims. Afsaruddin deals with amazing clarity how burning issues like the meanings of jihad, women's rights, and democracy are dealt with by both fundamentalists and modernists as each constructs the past in different ways. Not your typical work of punditry - the author is widely read and grounds her analysis in primary sources, often challenging established stereotypes. Check out p. 127 where the author takes down neo-con Bernard Lewis a peg or two. Highly recommended; eloquently written!

Interesting insights and worth reading, but should've been two books instead of one

Asma Afsaruddin's The First Muslims: History and Memory is a worthwhile read that offers interesting insights and perspectives on both the early history of Islam and on how that history has come to be viewed through the lens of memory. The lens of _selective_ memory more often than not, as Ms. Afsaruddin points out quite vividly, showing how various Islamic writers over the years have consciously edited and shaded the way they relate that history to support or promote their own particular take on how that history should be viewed.

My only real criticism of The First Muslims is that it doesn't go into sufficient depth, either in the section that deals with history or in the section that deals with how that history is viewed and interpreted, particularly in the current day. While I can appreciate the ambitious nature of what Ms. Afsaruddin was trying for, I think the reading public would've been better served by splitting the book into two separate books and then have each book go into greater depth. As it is, this book by itself feels insufficient to the task and while highly educational, left me feeling somewhat dissatisfied at the end, a niggling feeling that there should have been more to both sections in order to properly round things out and to give the subjects the treatment they deserve.

Highly recommended, with the caution that while it does a good job of framing the issue of history versus memory in Muslim perspectives, it falls short in giving the reader a full understanding of just how this has shaped the Muslim world as it exists today, and more importantly, where the lines of difference within the contemporary Muslim world are drawn.

The Best starting place to learn about Islam

This is perhaps the best book to offer as a starting place for a non-Muslim study of Islam. It delves into the sensibilities and convictions of the Prophet, his Companions and Successors in a very readable way. But then Prof. Afsaruddin goes further and connects the dots to the present moment in Islamic intellectual debate. For those who have been watching the "Islamic State" rampage across Iraq and Syria, this book will set it all in context as she looks at the Islamic State, jihad, the roles of women and political governance to see what the First Muslims might say to the present day Islamists. For Christians and Jews who have studied their own scripture's textual formation she lays out the debates about the formation of the Quran and the Hadith (says of the Prophet) and how they achieved "authorized" status. All of this is packed into a clear and yet brief account of these important topics.

I'll keep this quick and simple. Boring. Repetitive. Save your money. There aren't a lot of books out there about Christopher Nolan, so I was excited about this one. Sadly, it was just a book waxing philosophical about Nolan's films and nothing more. If that is your bag, enjoy. But if you want a thorough biography about one of the greatest directors of all time, I'm afraid you'll have to keep waiting.

A Great Introduction

When I was a kid, my MIT-engineer uncle sent me as a birthday present a book on astronomy. It was a nice idea, but the book was almost all text, and pretty dry reading for an eight-year-old. I wish he could have sent me The Naked-Eye Sky. This is a wonderful introduction to astronomy and the night sky for the average person or even the student taking a first course in astronomy. The book begins with some basic celestial mechanics, explaining the relative motions of the earth, moon, and sun (touching on topics such as tides, eclipses, and timekeeping), before going on to its largest section, which is about the constellations.

I've never before been able to find anything in the night sky except the Big Dipper and Orion, but this book helps you identify all the major constellations. As a practical guide to the night sky should be, it consists of just a little bit of text supplemented by large illustrations--a pair for each constellation. The first diagram shows just the pattern of stars as we see them, and then a second illustration draws in the outline of the constellation and sometimes names some of the major stars. This is very useful for me since I don't have the imagination to connect the dots correctly myself.

A final section of the book discusses stars, planets, comets and meteors.

All in all, this would be the perfect tool for a scout leader or a parent teaching kids about the night sky. It's also detailed enough, with enough science and mathematics, to be useful to adults who may have never quite understood what they were looking at when they looked up. Reading and using this book as a guide won't make you an astrophysicist, but it will make you a person who better appreciates our corner of the universe.
