An Awesome Update to an Awesome Book
By El Tonio
[[VIDEOID:mo9BMB253PIHII]]I am an avid collector of Lego Star wars sets and minifigures, and was big fan of the original edition of this book. So, when I found out about this updated and expanded edition I preordered right away. I got my copy today, and I'm happy to report that this beautiful and fully expanded edition is as good or better than the original in every way.

This book was released to coincide with the 15th Anniversary of the Lego Star Wars theme. The first edition was published in 2009 (or on the 10th anniversary of the theme), and includes Lego Star Wars sets through 2010. A lot of new sets have been released since then, so this edition provides a much need update. The book includes lots of great things from the original (like the timeline), plus some wonderful new things (like the minifigure gallery) and updates. Here is a list of the key things I liked best about this new edition of the book.

(1) It includes just about everything from the first edition (so no need to go back and buy that book if you don't already own it unless you want that minifigure). Plus, it includes info on all of the sets released since then, INCLUDING everything slated for release in 2014 even if it was not out when the book was released (like the Sandcrawler 75059, Mos Eisley Cantina 75052, AT-AT 75054, and more).

(2) My favorite part is that it still includes the very helpful and chronological 8 page list of all Lego Star Wars sets ever released (with a picture of each box and broken down by episode/series/expanded universe).

(3) Another great part (and an awesome NEW addition to the book) is the 14 page minifigure gallery. It's a great way to see variations of each figure side by side, and also very fun to look through in general.

(4) Yet another great new addition is that it includes a Set Index at the back so it is much easier to find everything.

(5) It includes 100s of full color photos, and lots of interesting and helpful text and factoids about various sets and the minifigures that came with the sets. I know there can always be more pictures or more text, but given the size of the book and the amount of material they had to cover, I think they continue to do a very nice job overall.

(6) All that, and it includes a "retro" Luke Skywalker mini-figure that has the traditional yellow skin you see on most Lego minifigures (including the very first Lego Star Wars minifigures) rather than the more authentic skin color that has been used on Lego Star Wars minifigures since around 2004. I did not start collection Lego Star Wars sets until about five years ago, so this was a real treat for me. The only potential issue some people may not like is that this "exclusive" minifigure looks very similar to (if not the same as) the figure that was released in the original 1999 Landspeeder set (7110). If there is a differences between the two it is very small (it is disassembled and I don't plan on opening mine, so if someone reading this has that set please let us know for sure one way or the other by leaving a comment or by writing your own review).

In sum, the Force is strong with this one. It is sure to be a real treat for just about any Lego Star Wars enthusiast. If you enjoyed the original edition, then this one is definitely worth getting.

Great content, Bad design
By Plasma52
As far as content, the book is great. The design of the book is not so great. The cover is very thick to accommodate the minifigure and is only attached with one page. It is very easily unglued, especially with a young user. Chances are, if the book is open and it slips off and on to the floor, it will probably come unglued. I also bought the similar Batman book and it is designed the same way, and did come unglued. Whoever produces the book should come up with a better way. Otherwise, I'm very happy with it and also my grandson is.

Wonderful LEGO book with an exclusive Luke Skywalker minifig
By Beth E Byars
The book alone is worth the price, as it covers every single LEGO Star Wars release up to the current 2014 sets. In this edition, there is also the inclusion of a minifig gallery that was sorely lacking in the previous edition of the book.

Plus there is the retro Luke Skywalker minifig that is exclusive to this release, which if past, out of print book release minifig prices continue to climb as they have, this book is a fantastic bargain, and for the serious collector you may want to purchase multiple copies for "safe keeping".

I'm making a decision. I'm changing things. This is it.
Three old friends in their mid-twenties. One remarkable day. For Ted, Danny and Charlotte, it's time to seize control. Make a difference. Change things. This is it.

A day trip through the parks and raves and cafes of South London, where life is what you make it. The rapid fire words of Kate Tempest paint a picture of lives less ordinary in an unforgiving world, sound-tracked by an exhilarating score.

The drama mixes rap-style poetry delivered with microphones and self-reflexive addresses to the audience.

A play about love, life and losing your mind, and the first play from one of the UK's most exciting performance poets, Kate Tempest.

Review
An ingenious whole that's funny and true about growing up, getting wasted and - as they gather round a tree planted to remember their friend - wasting life. Tempest's writing oscillates between dynamic poetry that's full of vividly phrased acute observation and dialogue that's plainer but just as spot-on ... [a] very exciting new play. (Elisabeth Mahoney Guardian 2012-03-27)

Tempest is a distinct emerging voice on the poetry and rapping scene in London ... it's an often electrifying script filled with sharp observations on life ... there's also hope and, without sentimentality, the play becomes a lesson in when to seize the day. (Daisy Bowie-Sell Telegraph 2012-05-23)

Kate Tempest is a poet and rapper, jobs whose cadences shine enticingly through in the punchy rhythms of her writing. Theatre has borrowed her for her debut play and I heartily suggest we try to make the arrangement permanent, as Tempest provides a welcome shot in drama's arm ... Tempest's is a talent to be harnessed, not wasted. (Fiona Mountford Evening Standard 2012-05-10)

Kate Tempest's debut Wasted is a punchy, poignant and perceptive play about life ... The three protagonists may be in their mid-20s but their sagas and struggles, aspirations and hesitations will resonate with audiences in generations above and below ... the characters are so close to home that it regularly strikes a nerve - and many a funnybone ... Tempest's writing is smart and electric, all pith and wit, marking her out as one to watch. This may be her first play, but her poetry and rap experience shines through in the accomplished, confident script. (Evelyn Curlet Stage 2012-05-09)

As Ms. Tempest's gorgeous streams of words flow out, they conjure a story so vivid it's as if you had a state-of-the-art Blu-ray player stuffed into your brain, projecting image after image that sears itself into your consciousness. Both as writer and performer, Ms. Tempest stitches together words with such animate grace that language acquires an almost tactile quality (New York Times on 'Brand New Ancients')

About the Author

Companion book

Decoding The Lost Symbol by Simon Cox is the go-to book for those who want to read The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. If you have read Dan Brown's books, you know that they are filled with symbolism, conspiracy theories, secret societies, and historical oddities. The author has created a book that gives an insight to some of these references in The Lost Symbol. There is quite a bit of information about Freemasons, Thomas Jefferson and buildings in Washington DC. Some of the other topics are Ancient Mysteries, some Biblical references, historical figures and even one of my favorite artists, Albrecht Duer. A fun book whether you read Dan Brown's book or not!

My Own Experiences with the Masonic Brotherhood
By Lollipops
After spending six years in Iraq with numerous Masons from various lodges, albeit mostly Prince Hall and Blue lodge masons(many I consider brothers for other reasons), I can tell you the truth is somewhere in-between both sides of this debate. If one can truly put away their own bias on this subject, they will find enough legitimate evidence to support 'some' of the alleged bad things and good things that occur in many lodges. Note that a much greater number of US Government, Military, and Law Enforcement personnel are Freemasons than you would ever imagine. Think of them as protectors, or gatekeepers.

Before I discovered how many of my friends and associates were Masons while working for the DoD in Iraq, my preconceived notion was that they were probably satanists, or followers of the occult. Although, some of the concepts, rituals, etc. might technically be occult, the majority of the Masons I know are not bad, or evil. Most of the masons I lived, worked and risked my life with were of the highest quality character, had the best work ethic, and were the most selfless people, just as our masonic founding fathers.(i.e. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, etc) However, here goes the sad, but true part..

When others resort to blanket stereotypes and ignorant generalizations about Freemasons, they are being sidetracked. The REAL problem is the protective Masonic structure itself imbues masons (both Good and Bad) with the "potential" to become dangerous threats to humanity. I am NOT speaking of what I 'think' or 'feel', rather what I have witnessed myself in an environment much like the movie, Beyond the Thunderdome (power struggles in a war torn country). I have seen many good masonic people enable, support, and protect a few filthy ones who have done more harm to their brotherhood than anyone on the outside. Some of the most detestable things I saw over there came from power hungry masons who constantly exploited the masonic system in order serve their own interests, or evade the law.

I do not believe what I repeatedly saw from the self-serving ones were isolated incidents, but more like a microcosm of what happens elsewhere, including back home.

You might think, "Well, who the hell cares?". That would be the wrong question.

Now think about where this might apply in a society full of Waste, Fraud, and Abuse; Corruption. What about the most powerful politicians who keep screwing Americans, but can't ever seem to be voted out of office? Consider the one bad cop on the squad who 'unnecessarily' kills an innocent youth (i.e. trigger happy), but never sees jail time? And how about the CEO of a large bank who somehow manages to convince the Treasury to allow the transfer of toxic debt from their balance sheet onto the backs of the public, sticking it to the average citizen struggling to pay the rent? What about that time a company starts laying employees off, but the new guy who doesn't even know his stuff yet, still keeps his job? Yeah, it is predominately because of 'who they know' and the fact that Masons will not turn on each other, even if they have one sorry excuse for a piece of crap brother whose a murderer. What was once a powerful force for good and freedom early in American history has quite simply been corrupted and exploited.

Don't get me wrong, I very much revere General Patton, Eisenhower, and MacArthur as I borrow quotes from them all the time. Unfortunately, the world is so messed up right now, these wolves I previously spoke about are licking their chops once they get in, as they are fully aware of the level of benefits, protection, and more influential connections they will make. Every time I asked one of the new guys why they were joining, it was always a selfish response. "I'd like to have a political career someday." or "I need a hookup." (trying to get a better job)

While working for Centcom, I can tell you the majority of Freemasons I knew were a step above the rest of us. But I cannot emphasize enough that some of the most corrupt, filthy, dangerous, thieving scumbags out there also wore the same robe. For much of the criminally inclined savages on earth, they will eventually face the law and justice will be served. But, there's a good chance that same criminal who wears a robe will be placed above the law. Depending on the circumstances and personality of the individual this can empower an ordinary criminal (including a thief) to become a VERY dangerous one.

Quite frankly, there doesn't seem to be enough checks and balances, or rather they simply don't work too well since the tight-knit brotherhood can effectively result in a 'no snitch' policy.

The adequate response from all Freemasons should be reflective in nature, to determine just how to make this right, restore what has been lost and prevent the great potential for tyranny, injustice, and further inequality.

Another reason I had to comment, I really got tired of seeing folks bash some of my friends without even knowing any of them. Trust me, they're not sorcerers. Basically, there's a whole lot of good people doing great work, spending lots of time helping charities and who die regularly for our country, but there's a few rotten apples destroying anything good still left in the system.

Just in case you're wondering, because of the aforementioned character issues of a `few' really shady masons, AND because of my personal religious beliefs I will likely never join Freemasonry.

I'd also like to consider this a plea for the Masonic leadership take this issue seriously, before it's too late. It may sound crazy, but the balance of power, future of humanity might very well depend on it. Just look around. Freemasons are just as much responsible for shaping the world today as they were way back then during early Colonial days. If the leadership hasn't even started to clean things up yet, it may be a sign it's time for all Freemasons to start shaking things up.

Rick Kennedy gets true leadership in this book
By C. Brant
This book really nails it on the core of what a leader and leadership is all about. Rick kicks the book off with what is perhaps the most important issue when it comes to leadership... that is whether leadership is a synonym for management. Well, in case you were wondering the answer is no. True leaders lead and managers manage. The goal isn't to manage, but to lead. That is the point that Rick gets across loud and clear right from the start.

He moves into the different leadership styles. After all, we are all different kinds of people and have different strengths. It would be crazy to expect that we all have the same style of leadership or have to conform to some sort of cookie cutter image of what it is to be a leader. Rather, by exploring the different styles, Rick was able to help me better see what type of leader I am or have the potential of becoming.

The next issue covered well is that of delegation and how as a leader, you are there to lead and not to do, but not to say you are above doing. It is just that if you "do," you are a terrible leader. You motivate and help people do what you couldn't do by yourself. I really feel Rick states clearly this and that we all could use some help in this area.

His chapter on communication really makes it clear that a leader communicates. It doesn't matter which type of leader you are, if you are going to lead, then you better learn how to speak and write in a way people will understand.

Rick finishes up with a fantastic point in that where you find a successful leader you will find a successful team. This is the reason why it is so important to find or become a good leader. Your company's well-being may very well depend on it.

The book was inspiration and yet very down to earth practical. I think there is something for everyone in the book. We all aspire to be good leaders and with the help of this book, we will be one step closer.

This is a great little resource for improving your leadership skills. I liked reading about the different kinds of leadership styles in particular. The chapter on communication is also very helpful, as it teaches the specifics of how a good leader communicates with team members. It's definitely worth checking out.

By sasha
If we have to become a leader ,then we have to develop various qualities like good communication skill, decision making, tackling the different situations and these skills cannot be developed over night. A leader perform various functions, takes various decision which ultimately helps the organisations to achieve the goal. Absence of leader in any organisation will slow down the progress and it is also possible that it may break. This book has many useful tips which everyone must know. I learned a lot from this book.

The Devotion of Suspect X: A Detective Galileo Novel (Detective Galileo Series), by Keigo Higashino

Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced, single mother who thought she had finally escaped her abusive ex-husband Togashi. When he shows up one day to extort money from her, threatening both her and her teenaged daughter Misato, the situation quickly escalates into violence and Togashi ends up dead on her apartment floor. Overhearing the commotion, Yasuko’s next door neighbor, middle-aged high school mathematics teacher Ishigami, offers his help, disposing not only of the body but plotting the cover-up step-by-step.

When the body turns up and is identified, Detective Kusanagi draws the case and Yasuko comes under suspicion. Kusanagi is unable to find any obvious holes in Yasuko’s manufactured alibi and yet is still sure that there’s something wrong. Kusanagi brings in Dr. Manabu Yukawa, a physicist and college friend who frequently consults with the police. Yukawa, known to the police by the nickname Professor Galileo, went to college with Ishigami. After meeting up with him again, Yukawa is convinced that Ishigami had something to do with the murder. What ensues is a high level battle of wits, as Ishigami tries to protect Yasuko by outmaneuvering and outthinking Yukawa, who faces his most clever and determined opponent yet.

From Booklist
One of Japan’s best-selling crime novelists makes his American debut in an atmospheric thriller about a desperate woman, Yasuko, who, craving a peacefull life with her daughter, Misato, kills her abusive lout of an ex-husband. The next-door neighbor, Ishigami, helps hide the body and improvises a cover-up. When the body is eventually found, however, determined investigator Kusanagi, with the help of Dr. Yukawa, a physicist who knew Ishigami in college, senses that something is amiss with Yasuko’s story. A cat-and-mouse, Dostoevsky-like investigation ensues. Higashino explores just how far a relationship built on a terrible event can last. Suggest to readers familiar with Natsuo Kirino (Real World, 2008), another Japanese master of psychological crime fiction, and Karin Fossum, whose Norway-set thrillers are also drenched in psychological terror. --Jessica Moyer

Review
“Higashino won Japan’s Naoki Prize for Best Novel with this stunning thriller about miscarried human devotion, a bestseller in Japan. The author successfully combines unquestionable reasoning with unquenchable pain. In this brutally laconic translation, cold logic battles warm hearts throughout this elegant proof of the wages of sin, in which everyone suffers and no one can ever win.” --Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Winner of Japan’s prestigious Naoki Prize and a bestseller there with more than two million copies sold, this literary psychological thriller is a subtle and shifting murder mystery. It will make readers redefine devotion and trust in an otherwise complete stranger.” --Library Journal (starred review) “Veteran police detective matches wits with a brilliant rookie criminal. This character-driven mystery by the prolific Higashino has much to recommend, including a droll Columbo-like sleuth and a great surprise ending.” --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "In The Devotion of Suspect X, Keigo Higashino weaves a web of intellectual gamesmanship in which the truth is a weapon that leads both police and readers astray.  The ingenius conclusion is so unexpected that it's difficult to imagine anyone seeing it coming. Smart, smart characters." --Jaqueline Winspear "How could we have ever imagined, without the help of a novel like this, that Japanese life could be so fraught with suffering and so entertaining all at once?” --Alan Cheuse, Dallas Morning News on HIMITSU (The Secret), published as NAOKO in the U.S. “Higashino is a deft conjurer of human relationships, and while this is first and foremost a tale of grief— —he infuses it with spasms of sharp humor.” --East Bay Express on Himitsu (The Secret)

“The Devotion of Suspect X has all the brilliant intricacy of the best Golden Age mysteries - puzzle within puzzle, twist after twist - with a modern sensibility.  It is a wonderful, fresh take on the classic mystery's intellectual struggle between protagonist and antagonist, adds to it all the right amounts of tension and pacing, places it in a fascinating setting, and gives of all of this plenty of heart." --Jan Burke, New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award winning author of Kidnapped and Bones

"Japanese crime writers excel at many things: one is the slow tightening of the noose that's at the fast-pounding heart of the police procedural.  The Devotion of Suspect X  is a terrific book in that tradition and it's about time American readers got a crack at it." --SJ Rozan, Edgar Award winning author of Winter and Night and On the Line

“The Devotion of Suspect X is elegant and spare and gripping and vivid. Most of all, however, it is deeply moving, and this is what sets it apart!” --Jesse Kellerman, bestselling author of Trouble and The Executor

"Irresistible! A mind-twisting story that will have readers plunging in to try to solve the crime before the math genius, the physics professor, or the cop get there first." --Nancy Pickard, New York Times bestselling author of The Scent of Rain and Lightning and The Virgin of Small Plains

Unusual crime novel
By morehumanthanhuman
This is an unusual crime novel that manages to play with our expectations of the genre. We expect certain things of our killers, detectives, geniuses – these expectations are played with here.

I don’t want to talk too much about the plot – one of the delights of this book is discovering it. I will say that Higashino just seems to “get” people – he creates characters who behave in ways that seem absolutely authentic, even when the situations are bizarre.

I’ve been reading a lot of Japanese fiction lately and I have found that translation can be a real sticking point for immersion in these novels. Some translations are so awkward. This one is elegant and unobtrusive.

A detective story in reverse
By kapilash
This is a cleverly and carefully constructed novel with each and every paragraph contributing to the plotline.

This novel has all the elements of a classic detective story. A murder in second chapter. There is a pair of inspector and a "consultant detective". While the detective is in the Sherlock Holmes/Hercule Poirot mould, the inspector is decidedly smarter than Lestrade. And the chemistry between them is different and much refreshing. And thankfully, there is no Captain Hastings/ Dr Watson to spend too many pages on wrong clues.

However, the story is told in reverse. We, the readers, know the culprits. And the motive. If you are attentive, you will even know what must have happened that is keeping the police from closing in on the suspects. But by that time, you are intrigued by the motives of the main characters. And closely related to the main plotline are a couple of poignant love stories dealt in a very mature way which hold our attention. Although the author hides a few things from the reader, the reader does not feel deceived. Making it a satisfying read when all the dots are finally connected.

However, the popular math bits and science information introduced into the narrative seemed a bit forced. For a math genius and a physics genius, they sure talk to each other about "P vs NP" and other things in a fairly childish fashion. Nevertheless, it does not take away too much from the novel.

Mark it for those rainy afternoons and savour it with hot coffee.

Great content; poor editing
By Tyrannosauron
First, an initial statement of possible sources of bias: I am a professional academic and an unapologetic LOST enthusiast (you may read what you like into that conjunction). I ordered the LOST Encyclopedia on May 4 and received it on October 12 following a delay from its original listed release date of August 24, so I've been anticipating its release for a while.

Second, an executive summary: as a fan of the show, I'm glad to finally have this "encyclopedia" on my bookshelf and think it an excellent resource. Nevertheless, the presentation of the book is somewhat less polished than I would have hoped, leading me to suspect that a second edition may be in the works. Any recommendation that I can give would therefore have to be a guarded one.

Like the show for which it serves as a reference guide, this book must have been a massive undertaking for everyone involved with little guarantee of pleasing everyone in its audience. I can therefore forgive the omission of some items (no entry for the Hybird, or "Hurley bird," for example) and the lack of linked entries (e.g. "The Hatch: see Swan Station," or "Jeremy Bentham: see John Locke").

My objections to the book's editing begin with the character entries, which are generally sorted alphabetically by first name. I have no problem with organizing an encyclopedia in this way, as this is hardly an academic text and there are a variety of minor characters whose last names are unknown; however, the glaring exceptions to this rule--John Locke, whose entry is filed under "L," and James Ford, whose entry is filed under "S" for "Sawyer"--happen to be among the most important entries in the volume. Finding those entries will only take an extra few seconds of the reader's time (especially since, as mentioned above, there are no linking entries), but the organization comes across as sloppy.

Also sloppy are the various textual redundancies. In the "Man in Black" entry, for example, a text blurb entitled "Jacob's Spirit" calls attention to the fact that "The spirit of a young Jacob repeatedly appeared to the Man in Black while he was acting out his end game as Locke..." One page later, immediately facing that blurb, is another blurb entitled "Haunting Reminders" which calls attention to the very same fact using the very same text, the only difference being in the capitalization of a single word. Similarly, the entry for Magnus Hanso ends with a three-sentence paragraph: the first sentence states that "Hanso's death remained a mystery to the outside world [until] DHARMA Initiative member Stuart Radzinsky documented Hanso's final resting place on the Blast Wall Map"; the second sentence states that "Details of Hanso's death remained a mystery to the outside world"; the third sentence states that (you guessed it) "DHARMA Initiative member Stuart Radzinsky documented Hanso's final resting place on the blast wall map." Again, this book constitutes a relatively massive undertaking and it's understandable that various typos would slip through (and there are a number of those), but given the two-month delay in the book's release I would have expected the editors to catch these obvious artifacts of the rewriting process.

I had initially speculated that the publication delay was a function of the writers' need to rewrite some entries in light of the final episode's controversial revelations regarding the "flash-sideways universe." That was apparently incorrect, as the only reference to the flash-sideways (that I've found, at least) comes at the tail end of Juliet's entry. Instead, all information about that "universe" is relegated to a few text-light and picture-heavy character entries that follow the encyclopedia's index. The entries seem arbitrarily organized (in order: Desmond, Hurley, Ben, Sun, Jin, Sayid, Kate, Claire, Locke, and Jack) and utterly disconnected from the rest of the encyclopedia. To the writers' credit, they call attention to some quotes from the final episode that should help confused viewers figure out where the flash-sideways universe fits into the overall story structure; however, one is left with the impression that someone involved with the book's production was embarrassed by the reception of the final episode and wanted to minimize its influence on the rest of the text. I would certainly hope that delaying publication gave the writers and editors adequate time to integrate this information--if they had wanted to do so. For better or for worse, this storyline is as much a part of LOST canon as anything else and it should have been treated as such.

Finally, there are several minor factual errors in the text--particularly with respect to the descriptions of the philosophers referenced by the show--but those are more nits to be picked than they are problems affecting the book's presentation. Nevertheless, it's an editor's job to pick those nits before publication.

Again, I'm glad to own the LOST encyclopedia and will readily admit that fans of the show (be they dedicated or casual ones) won't be able to find a better reference. The content is top-notch, covering both breadth and depth, as detailed in other reviews. If asked whether or not I would recommend that someone else spend $25 on it (much less the $45 cover price), however, I would only be able to answer that anyone considering doing so should take into account the very real possibility that an updated and cleaned-up new edition may be forthcoming. Of course, I also can't guarantee that any such edition will actually see the light of day. As such, I have no regrets on my part, but less risk-averse fans might think otherwise.

A good, if not definitive resource with some noticeable flaws
By Benjamin S. Lundy
The LOST Encyclopedia will not bring a bevy of new insights or craved "answers" for fans of the show, but it is a solid catalog of facts and histories from the show's vast mythology. I wouldn't call it comprehensive, but it's an enjoyably casual reference for fans of the show.

The biggest negative trait of the book is the sloppy editing. Despite being delayed multiple times before its release, the articles still contain numerous typographical errors (I'd estimate one every couple of pages on average), far more than should be acceptable for a professionally published work like this. There are even entries that are OUT OF ALPHABETICAL ORDER: under "D," there are three entries ordered "Donovan," "Dogen" and "Doctors." I know it's something most people won't lose a lot of sleep over, but as an English major I found them impossible to ignore and quite distracting from the flow of the book.

More important and germane to the nature of the LOST Encyclopedia, there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the emphasis placed on some elements of the show in contrast to others. For example, on the same two-page spread, Eddie Colburn, a minor character featured in ONE flashback episode, is given as much attention as Edward Mars, a character who appeared in multiple flashbacks and on the Island. Another example: there's a massive two-page entry dedicated to the RECORD PLAYER in the Swan station. The same amount of space is given to the blast door map, one of the pivotal set pieces of the series. If I had to guess, I'd say that such decisions were made to make the articles fit into neat two-page layouts, with the visual presentation emphasized over the relevance of information.

As mentioned in a previous review, the alphabetization of the entries is slapdash. If you want to actually look up an obscure element of the show rather than just casually browse the book, you may find yourself taking several guesses on what your query may be titled before you find it. For example, if you want to look up the glowing river alternatively called "The Source" or "The Heart of the Island," you won't find it listed under either of those two names. Instead, it is mentioned in a brief paragraph in the massive entry "The Island," as well as intermittently in other entries. Other aspects of the show that this fan thinks should have entries but do not, based on their importance in the show, include the Whispers, Time Travel, and the Donkey Wheel.

Now, to the positive. Given the existence of the much more comprehensive fan wiki "Lostpedia," the biggest appeal of The LOST Encyclopedia is not the depth or organization of its entries. Instead, it is the hundreds and hundreds of visual aids that accompany the entries, along with photos of LOST props and locales sprinkled liberally throughout the book. All of the entries on the major Dharma stations feature original diagrams. There are hundreds of close-ups of key props, such as Faraday's journal and maps used by the characters, as well as more obscure pieces like Drive Shaft promotional posters and the contents of Kate's time capsule. Most fans have never had an opportunity to see such components of LOST lore this clearly and up close.

The encyclopedia also features a number of ancillary elements that exist outside of the show, thus establishing them as canon while also exposing them to fans who may not have seen them before. The entry for Alvar Hanso contains information about Thomas Mittlewerk and Rachel Blake, characters featured only in the LOST Alternate Reality Game "The LOST Experience." The article on the Purge includes a copy of the truce between the Others and the Dharma Initiative, previously available only to those who bought the special edition of the Season Five box set. There are even translations of many of the hieroglyphics featured on sets and props from the show, engravings that would be impossible to discern from screencaps.

Ironically, the unofficial Lostpedia easily remains the definitive source of information on LOST even after the release of this book. Really, The LOST Encyclopedia functions best as a kind of coffee table attraction, a tome to peruse for the sake of curiosity as opposed to a serious study of the show's mythology. While its numerous textual errors give some entries an unpolished feel, from a strictly visual perspective the book is stunning. It's not easy to produce as many new images from a show as heavily scrutinized as LOST, but the material unique to the book, as well as the conversational tone best suited to enjoyable casual reading, make it worth the buy.

No buts-this book is canon
By Maeve
I still highly recommend this book to anyone who loved Lost. If you want a gift for your favorite Lost fanatic, this is the only book you should consider buying. That is because this is the only book written with the help of the Lost producers. It is fact-canon. Other books may theorize what happened in the Lost world but this is the only book that tells you what did happen.

"No great depth" said the previous review! I was amazed at all the depth and details. Just a few examples: Jacob appreciated Widmore's loyalty and allowed him to rise to leadership with Eloise. Jacob had Alpert strip Widmore of his position and banish him. Danielle arrived on the island after the Purge. Ben planned to fool Juliet into releasing the gas from the Tempest killing herself, the 815 survivors and the freighter crew. Plus it confirms things we suspected like Widmore being the one to execute the Purge of the Dharma Initiative via gas from the Tempest and the one who told his goons to slaughter the Ajira 316 survivors.

There is very little on the flash-forwards. The 14 or so pages (text is limited to brief recaps) are tacked on the end of the book after the index like an afterthought. Given this is an encyclopedia there isn't much for the writers to say about them anyway but the placement is very odd.

Know what else is odd? Apparently the editors didn't show up for work! I found too many instances of misplaced and repeated text including this gem in a series of bullets about Shannon; "Loudly whined about Marshal Mars dying too callously." LOL! It is sooo annoying when someone dies callously! That probably should have been "Callously whined about Marshal Mars dying too loudly."

I also found overall that the text lacked clarity. Many paragraphs were poorly worded and clumsy. In places grammatical errors left the text unnecessarily ambiguous. It's obvious that neither the publisher nor the writers were up to the task of producing this book properly which is sad. Or perhaps the producers are at fault for not choosing writers who could produce clean text under a tight deadline.

I'm still giving it five stars because the book looks great (all 400 pages), it contains a mountain of information that is all canon (which no other Lost book can claim) and it is relatively cheap for all it contains. For all its faults, it still makes the best gift you can buy for any kind of Lost fan from the causal fan all the way up to the Lost fanatic.

This is an introduction to the use of modern imaging techniques in diagnosing neurological disease. Magnestic resonance imaing (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) have revolutionized radiological investigation and have been especially important in neuroradiology. Increasingly these techniques are being used outside specialist neurological centres and there is therefore a need for an introductory book highlighting thorough, cost-effective investigation.

The book is divided into three parts. First, as an understanding of cerebral anatomy is the starting point in image interpretation, there is an anatomical atlas of CT and MRI images with explanatory line drawings of areas of anatomical complexity. Part 2 is an atlas of differential diagnoses summarizing the most common cerebral pathologies. Part 3 contains contributed chapters on the major categories of brain pathology in adults and children. Each chapter is extensively illustrated and referenced and provides state-of-the-art summary of neuroradiological diagnosis. A concluding chapter gives an overview of recent technical advances in cerebral imaging, including diffusion and perfusion imaging and spectroscopy.

The book is primarily aimed at general radiologists and radiologists in training but will also provide an excellent introduction to modern neuroradiology for neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists and others with an interest in neuroimaging.

The book is well written, beautifully displayed and would be a great introduction to a major part of neuroradiology for specialist registrars. I was very pleased that it re-appeared from its wanderings and that I was able to complete my review. A good buy for every department.
The British Journal of Radiology

Well printed and of pleasing quality. The figures are abundant and of good quality. The tables and drawings are clear, so that the book can well be recommended.
