About the Author
Jan Roberts-Breslin is an Associate Professor of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in studio and field video production and media arts. She is also the Graduate Program Director at Emerson, responsible for coordinating the graduate curriculum and advising over a hundred masters students. She taught previously at Temple University and at Seton Hall University. For the past sixteen years, Jan has been a media artist and freelance producer/director of film, video, and interactive multimedia projects, including a feature film, documentaries, experimental work, and corporate productions. She has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and Video Production from Temple University.

Making complex issues clear

This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.

The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.

Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Great foundation for film students

This book reads as a bit dated, but the foundations you learn from it are terrific. I used this as a textbook in a film production class and learned quite a lot. We were assigned certain chapters but I read the whole book on my own because I learned so much from it. If you're new to film and media production definitely pick up this book. I still keep it on my shelf and reference it every once in a while.

An interesting account of excavations in the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, rich in illustrations

Nordenskiold, a Swede, worked in the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde in 1891, shortly after the Wetherills "discovered" these structures. His excavations were more scientific than theirs (but, of course, not up to current standards). The first 112 pages describe his journey from Durango, Colorado, to the canyons and his work in the cliff dwellings. There are many excellent photographs of the cliff dwellings and sketches of floor plans (many are full page). There are also 24 full page photographic plates of human remains (2 plates) and artifacts. The information on Mesa Verde is followed by 50 pages summarizing information on other archaeological sites, the Hopi ("Moki"), customs of other Pueblo groups (of interest in discussing whether the cliff dwellers were ancestral to these groups), and on the Coronado entrada (including a long reproduction of Castaneda's account). Finally, there is an appendix with a discussion of human crania by a physical anthropologist, with many measurements; I regard this is of little modern interest. Readers should know that the plates with artifacts are grouped by the type of artifact; thus, images of the artifacts found in one site are found on many plates (a legend gives the location at which each artifact was found). This book was originally published in Swedish. The English in our versions is fluent. This review is based on the softcover reprint by the Mesa Verde Museum Association. I have not seen the recent electronic reprint, so do not know whether its text is free of errors and the illustrations are included. For those interested in the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings, this book is very well worth reading, even though later archaeological work has updated some of the findings.

A Dose of Reality

If you have ever patronized a bar or been a bartender or waitress, you will connect with The Cocktail Waitress. In spite of this book's being the result of scholarly research, it is as readable as a novel.
Spradley and his associates observe what occurs in a bar near a college, describing the culture established in the bar. Most readers can identify with at least one of the characters as the hierarchy of roles comes into play. The bartenders (male) are the ostensible dominant figures, and the cocktail waitresses have to act within the unwritten rules that the baartenders establish.
I have spoken with several cocktail waitresses currently working at college bars near my college. They assure me that little has changed in the twenty-odd years since the study was completed and today.
An enjoyable and informative read!

Great Quick Reference to Important Theatre Directors

I had to get this book for my theatre directing class. Its a great book to get the essential points and facts on the directors that created what we know as the "director". Each person has about 3-5 pages worth of information of their life and what they contribute to the theatre. The writing is interesting with little fun filled facts and is a good book for those who want to get an idea who the person is without having to go to deep. Great reference book. Great for cocktail parties with important theatre people.

A MUST read if you love Celtic history!

I received this book, years ago, as a gift from an Irish friend of mine and had no clue what a treasure I was being given.

From the Ancient to the modern (around the 70's) this book covers everything, starting with the Three Sorrows of Irish Storytelling...one of which, The Children of Lir, brought me to tears, to the last of the line of great Elven kings.

An engaging book, you'll meet an array of colorful characters, all of which will enrich your reading.

My favorite is Nano Hayes, who spans from the pre to the post "new god" eras, a wise old Witch who is as spellbinding, as she is valuable to Celtic lore.

While I will admit that there is no glossary (at least in my copy) of how to pronounce certain words and that is beyond frustrating (as it appears that this book was painstakingly researched by handed-down stories and word-of-mouth from those who descended from the mortals lucky enough to interact with, the Fae) if you really must know and your curiosity gets the better of you, simply look them up.

One book you'll NEVER regret reading. Yes it IS long...but worth it!

If you never read anything else about Irish lore, you MUST read this book!

A dozen movies to make in one omnibus

Wow! I did not know a lot about Irish fairy tales, and this book did not disappoint! Michael Scott weaves in fantastic lore while brilliantly keeping one appropriately intrigued. Each one of these charming stories easily lends itself to a big budget film! And the magical tone keeps the reader constantly entertained.

Good addition to the collection

This book was a surprise. I am a fan of folk and mythology from all over the world, and I have found that folktales need to be very well-written to be enjoyed, or else they end up as alien stories about alien cultures. Irish Folk and Fairytales is a good collection of the most important stories of Ireland. It is well written and the tales of the ancient elves and kings touches the heart. This is a book that can be read over and over again

Better than I even expected.

I bought this book because I have always liked the movie "The Big Country", and have been an avid reader of the Matt Helm Series, by this author, Donald Hamilton.

I anticipated a good, enjoyable book, but "The Big Country" exceeded my expectations. Everyone in the book was believable: I could understand why they behaved as they did (something that is not true in the movie, even though I love it!). As is usual, there were subplots in the book that were cut from the film: a pity, because those subplots were excellent, and better revealed the character of the hero, Captain James McKay.

In some ways, I liked the book more than the movie. I recommend both, however.

Sea Captain takes on the west

Captain James McKay leaves the sea and goes west to claim his bride and make a new life. When he is taken to task by the locals, McKay quickly learns the rules of the game and makes his mark. This is Donald Hamilton action at his best and is not the typical "shoot-em-up" western. Great reading!

Originality in the Western Motif

Donald Hamilton's book is notable in that it features a Western hero who doesn't engage in gun slinging. Despite the gushing of some, let's not forget that this was 50s pulp. Hamilton didn't turn it out as a great masterpiece, and it just isn't. The book is not overly long, and some sequences in the book that were left out of the movie were just repetitive filler in the book in the first place.

Hamilton didn't seem to have a great deal of feel for how long it takes to ride a horse from place to place. Characters bop around over long distances as if they were in horseless carriages. LOL He was hardly alone in this failing, but there is so much constant travel in this book that it is somewhat more exposed than in some others.

However, the book gave us one of the best films ever in the Western genre, and we have much to thank it for in that regard. My main regret is that there is not a sequel, either of the book or the film, to show Captain McKay establishing his ranch and the marriage that seemed inevitable at the end of both book and film.

Don't take my criticism to suggest that the book is not a good read. It is. However, if you spend the major bucks that Amazon sellers want for a used paperback, you may wind up disappointed. If you must have it, Google it occasionally and find it listed at a used bookstore that doesn't realize they can try to charge an arm and a leg for it. I got my copy for $4 plus $2.50 shipping from an online list from a used book store not so many years ago, and I've seen it recently for as little at $15.

And if you are a fan of westerns and for some reason haven't seen the film yet, by all means do, its a "must see" for western fans. However, make sure that you see it in wide screen format. The Pan and Scan shown on such channels as Encore Westerns detracts FAR too much from the majesty of some scenes. TCM always shows the widescreen, and the DVD was also done correctly.
